About Us

Results orientated. Our designs are based on achieving your school’s individual goals. Whether you want to increase parental involvement, raise admissions or attract a higher calibre of teaching staff, we utilise all forms of media to help achieve these goals in a way that’s right for you.

Sustainable outcomes. It’s all very well producing a visually engaging, accessible website, but if it’s out-of-date within a month, it’s failed. All of our websites are powered by an easy-to-use online Content Management System (CMS), meaning that non-technical school staff can update the website anytime on any Internet connected device. Full training is provided.

Collaborative approach. Client involvement is integral to the success of any website, hence we work closely with you at every stage of the project. Plus, your project manager is always on hand to offer advice and answer questions, both during the project and post-launch.

We’re a London based design company specialising in web design for education. Each of our bespoke websites are tailored to your school’s individual requirements, meaning that you receive a website that reflects your unique ethos and brand.

Our mission is to bring the latest in web design and technology to the educational sector. All at an affordable price.

Many of our competitors use their own bespoke CMS, effectively locking you into long and expensive maintenance contracts for the lifespan of your website. Our approach is different. We use the world’s leading open-source Content Management System (WordPress), meaning that you can move your website to alternative hosting at any time, thereby providing a low risk option.

OverviewCurrent Situation

Creative Schools has carried out an analysis of the current website and communications strategy.

The school is currently using Fronter as their website and VLE provider. The school’s web address is currently a sub-domain of “webfronter.com”, which is damaging the brand, site traffic and visibility of the school.

The website is inaccessible for users. Content of a high interest (i.e. news and events) is often buried within PDF newsletters. Also the lack of drop down navigation means that users have to guess where content resides. The website does not perform well on mobile devices, including mobile phones and iPads.

The overall standard of content is good, as the website has been well maintained over the years. However, the presentation of this content is dated. The school produces lots of great work and needs a platform that showcases their success.

The website is currently maintained by a sole editor. The school wants to assign editing rights to a number of staff, along with appropriate workflows to allow for quality control.

The school doesn’t have access to website statistics but it is believed that traffic to the website is low.

The visual identity and ethos of the school is currently lost with the current website. The generic template doesn’t portray the school’s visual identity, whilst the ethos of the school is buried in a paragraph on a low ranking page.

The school demographic is mixed with a number of parents with EAL. However, they are currently failing to cater for this hard-to-reach group as there is no translation facility for users with EAL, or mobile integration for users with smart phones.

The school is currently rated “Oustanding” and this needs to be reflected in the website. Not only should the website showcase the schools achievements, but also provide evidence for Ofsted inspectors making judgements. The school requires a full content audit to ensure that it is meeting all of its legal obligations.

OverviewCurrent Situation (continued)

The school currently produces an adhoc newsletter that is printed and handed out to pupils. The newsletter is then uploaded to the website homepage.

There is a high amount of duplication across the different communication channels. Staff are having to re-create the same news story for the website, newsletter, parental boards, SMS etc.

There are no brand guidelines except for the logo and colour palette.

Teachers give parents’ letters to pupils on an ad-hoc basis. These are then uploaded to various areas on the website.

The school is currently not using any social media, but would be interested in using YouTube and Instagram to promote video and pictures content. However, these channels would need to be secure.

Parental involvement in the school is good, with high numbers of parents being involved in school activities. However, their engagement with the website is believed to be poor.

There is a calendar facility on the current website, where parents can subscribe if they have a Google calendar. Events are also added to the newsletter.

The use of rich media such as video, audio and imagery is very limited with the current website. Content of this type is very popular with users and helps give the school identity, whilst also providing a valueable insight into school life.

The school will arrange their own photo shoot and will provide Creative Schools with the photos for the project.

The school is looking to moving towards paperless communication with their parent body. The newsletter is currently emailed out to parents. This method of working should be incorporated into the new website.

OverviewProject Summary

Creative Schools will be designing one website for Yerbury Primary School

Design a website that reflects the school brand and ethos

Creative Schools will design a visually engaging and accessible website that is in line with the school’s ethos and vision. The school logo and colour palette will be incorporated into the design, whilst remaining clean, crisp and corporate with the focus being on simplicity.

The website must be easily maintained by staff at the school, allowing for multiple editors, content workflows and standardised format

Creative Schools will build the website using the WordPress platform. The build-in CMS (Content Management System) will allow easy updates via any Internet connected device. Nominated staff will receive comprehensive training before the website is launched. Creative Schools will create different user roles, allowing for varying user permissions. Responsibility for content delivery and website maintenance falls solely on the school.

Website must be accessible to all stakeholders

Creative Schools will add the following functionality to make the website accessible to all stakeholders: 1) Google Translations will allow “machine translation” of the website into any of the supported languages. 2) Responsive Design. The design will expand and collapse, naturally adapting to the device being used. i.e. PC’s, mobile phones, tablets etc. 3) The website will be built on W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards, meaning it will function correctly in all Internet browsers. 4) A “site search” text box will allow users to find information based on a keyword search (a bit like Google). This will produce a search results page based on their keyword. 5) A sitemap will allow users to view the logical structure of the website.

Website must incorporate all of the existing website content and satisfy all legal requirements set out by Ofsted

Creative Schools will carry out a content audit to ensure the school is fulfilling all of it’s legal requirements. Creative Schools will migrate all existing content (where applicable) into the new website. Creative Schools will assist with information architecuture, and re-align content into the new format where necessary, as part of this project.

Overview (continued)

Project Summary (continued)

Promote the school’s outstanding success and ethos of the school

Creative Schools will promote the success of the school by doing the following: 1) Portray the school ethos as a number of statements (with correspondind images) on the homepage. We would probably use an interactive slider to achieve this effect. 2) Success stories and experiences will be promoted through the blog and featured news. This will not only raise awareness of success, but also provide evidence to Ofsted.

Use the school’s official domain name for the school website

The new website will use the http://www.yerbury.islington.sch.uk domain. Creative Schools will re-direct any other domains to this address.

Increase parental involvement and levels of communication

For parents to fully commit to the website they need to feel a certain level of ownership and involvement. We will achieve this through different forms of interaction: 1) Parents can subscribe to news and calendar feeds. These feeds will also be filtered and fed into specific areas of the website (i.e. the parents’ evening page will show the upcoming parents’ evenings from the calendar). 2) Parents can subscribe to the e-newsletter. 3) Parents can subscribe to any social media channels that the school decides to use. This could include: - a YouTube or Vimeo channel which will be fed into the website to create “Yerbury TV” (an interactive collection of videos). - an Instagram feed that will show pictures from school life.

Overview (continued)

Project Summary (continued)

Improve access to school resources and services, whilst reducing levels of duplication and paperwork

Creative Schools will add the following functionality to improve access to resources and services: 1) Featured news on the homepage, along with a blog archive will inform users of the latest news. 2) An Interactive calendar will inform users of upcoming events. The user can filter the calendar to show different types of event and also subscribe. 3) The school will have the ability to create online forms and quick surveys. 4) Creative Schools will carry out SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) on the website, ensuring that it ranks highly in search engines such as Google. 5) Document Archives will be used to store “policies” and “parents’ letters”. 6) Staff will only have to create news posts once on the website. The posts will also form an electronic newsletter that can be periodically emailed to parents or printed out. 7) A microsite of latest news and events that would display on the digital displays.

Provide hosting and support for the website

Creative Schools will provide a hosting solution for the new website with the following features: 1) Dedicated telephone support weekdays (09:00am - 18:00pm) 2) Support via email (24/7) in case of emergency (website goes down, hacked website or passwords compromised etc) 3) Hosting for the website on our secure servers for one year which includes - Weekly backups of the website for disaster recovery - Security updates to ensure website is protected - Upgrading of website plugins and software versions - 5GB of disk space (most school websites are between 1-5GB) 4) Google Analytics reporting (each year you will receive a detailed report, outlining who is visiting your website and which pages they are viewing.

Project Description

Design: Design of school website and full content audit Step 1

Development phase I: Front and rear-end development of website Step 2

Development phase II: Upload content, training and social media management Step 3

Development phase III: Hosting, SEO and testing Step 4

We want you to feel informed and empowered during the progression of your project. Below we have outlined in detail what each of your unique project specifications will involve.

Design of school website

During the initial design meeting you’ll receive a full content audit on the current state of the school website. We’ll also start working through the information architecture of the website, so you we can determine how the website will be structured. We’ll discuss different styles and methods to achieve your design. You’ll then receive the first round of conceptual designs, as Photoshop drawings of your website. This will show the “global” features (logo, colour-scheme, typography, navigation, footer etc) along with the proposed homepage layout. We’ll work with you to tweak and adapt the design (up to 3 rounds of changes) until you’re happy with it.

We’ll then provide further conceptual designs for the news blog, calendar, portfolios, standard page, Yerbury TV and mobile view, so you are fully informed of how the different features of your website will look. The design phase ends with official sign-off from your school.

Front and rear-end development of website and digital displays

We’ll begin converting your conceptual designs into a fully functioning website. The website will be developed in our test environment where it will remain until launch. You’ll receive a link so you can track the progress of the build.

We’ll start by building the structure, adding the global elements and core functionality. We’ll then create the different page templates (styles of pages). This will include the micro-site for the digital displays. This phase will conclude with the confirmation of the sitemap and the school submitting all new content required for launch.

Project Description Continued

Upload content, training and social media management

We’ll then create the pages in accordance with the sitemap and upload all content from the existing website.

We’ll then create YouTube, Instagram and Google (web stats) accounts for the school. These will be branded and fed into the school website. Any appropriate videos and photos will be uploaded to YouTube and Instagram, repectively. You’ll also receive a monthly report of website statistics from Google, outlining how people are using your website.

This phase will conclude with the staff being trained in the Content Management System. We’ll hold one session at the school where staff can attend. The session will last two hours and cover everything required to maintain and update the website. The session will also include written and video materials that trainees can take away and access any time.

Domain name, hosting, SEO and testing.

The school will provide their completed “SEO pack” so we can carry out the necessary Search Engine Optimisation on the websites.

We then carry out full testing on the website to ensure it is performing correctly across a range of Internet browsers and devices.

The website will be hosted on Creative Schools web servers, ensuring that the school has full technical support, disaster recovery and back-ups available in case of any future issues.

The domain for Yerbury will be www.yerbury.islington.sch.uk. This is controlled by LEA. The school will request that the domain provider re-points the domain at the Creative Schools servers. Note: It sometimes takes up to 24 hours for these changes to filter through the Internet.

This signifies launch and the end of the project.

Design is in everything we make, but it’s also between those things. It’s a mix of craft, science, storytelling,

propaganda, and philosophy. A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to

add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

...almost 55% of the 1 million most visited websites that are run on a content management system (CMS) are run on WordPress. W3Techs, Nov 2011

Features ExplainedHere’s our chance to provide a bit more information about some of the technology mentioned in this proposal.

WordPress

WordPress is a website platform and content management system (CMS).

This platform (as well as being scalable, free, open source and completely customisable) has the benefit of providing complete control to your school though its easy-to-use content management system.

There are too many benefits to list here, but it provides the backbone to your website. For more information visit WordPress.org.

Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at providing an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones)

Responsive Web Design

This essentially means that the website expands and contracts to the type of device being used. Mobile browsing is set to overtake fixed Internet access by 2014 and with the variety of mobile devices be used, you cannot ignore this issue.

Not only do we build your website to appear correctly on each device, we can also tailor content depending on the device being used. For example, it’s beneficial to provide simplified information to mobile users.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website in a search engine’s “natural” or unpaid (“organic”) search results.

Features Explained (continued)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

SEO can be effected by a wide range of factors but there are several techniques which we use to get your school rising through the ranks of search engine results.

At the start of your project your school will receive an “SEO pack” to complete. You’ll need to provide a title, short description and some keywords based on the content of your website and the nature of your school.

Machine translation is the use of software to translate text or speech from one language to another.

Machine Translation

Schools with a diverse demographic often find it hard to communicate with parents who have English as an additional language. Translating messages by hand is both expensive and time-consuming.

Creative Schools’ translation tool uses “Google Translations” to translate English into any one of their 65 supported languages. You simply write your web pages in English and the user can translate it into their chosen language with the click of a button.

For a list of supported languages, visit http://translate.google.co.uk/about/

An accurate and accessible Events Calendar is at the hub of every successful school website.

Import events Import and sync event feeds from other calendars including Google Calendar, iCal & Outlook. e.g. You may want to sync the “main” school Outlook calendar with the website so that the two are mirrored. Add an event in Outlook and the website is automatically updated.

Export & subscribe Export any event or category feed to your calendar - even on mobile devices. e.g. A parent subscribes to your calendar and it automatically syncs on her smartphone, meaning she’s always up-to-date without having to keep checking on the website.

Multiple views Display your events in Month, Week, Day, Agenda and Posterboard view. Lock to specific views or allow the user to choose. e.g. You may want an “Agenda” view on your homepage and a “Month” view on a different page.

Filter by category Filter your calendar by any combination of colour-coded category. Subscribe to filtered feeds or embed them alongside any content. e.g. A parent may select the “parents’ evening” category which would automatically filter the calendar to show appropriate events.

Recurring events Easily publish events repeating on any day of the week, month, or year. Even schedule complex recurrence patterns such as “every first and third Monday of the month.”

Locations & Maps Add detailed location data, embed a Google Map directly into your event details, and even specify exact longitude and latitude coordinates.

Search Events Enable calendar events to show in the site search results, meaning users can search for events based on a “keyword”.

Facebook Integration Import and sync your Facebook events and the events of your Friends, Pages and Groups, and publish your calendar events to Facebook.

Blogs are essentially a collection of news stories “posts” typically displayed in reverse chronological order.

Featured posts Featured posts are news items that you wish to promote (normally through a fancy slider on the homepage). When combined with a “featured image” these can be a powerful marketing tool for the school.

News archives Over time your news posts will begin to form an archive. The archive can be viewed by both date and category. Normally archives will be broken into month and annual folders.

Categories & Tags Categories and tags allow you to group your posts by subject. Categories are normally pre-defined groups, whilst tags are descriptive words and tend to grow organically.

Discussion You have the option to allow users to “comment” on any of your posts and calendar entries. The user writes their comment but it doesn’t appear on your website until it has been approved by an administrator.

RSS & subscription RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allows you to export your news posts in the form of a feed. This means users can “subscribe” to school news and receive it without having to come to the website.

Blogroll A blogroll is a list, sometimes categorised, of links to web pages the author of a blog finds worthwhile or interesting. In most school cases it will be for useful links, such as DfE, LEA website etc.

Sticky Posts Normally posts are displayed in reverse chronological order, but a sticky post always remains at the top. This is particularly useful for important messages such as school closure or reminders.

Blog by Email You can email posts directly to your blog without any direct interaction through the CMS, simply by adding the blog’s address to your email recipients. The most common uses are for parents’ letters and reminders.

Whenever, you upload a new video it will automatically appear on your website, creating a video archive over time. YouTube also allows you to add secure options to your channel, meaning users cannot share, comment or link to your videos.

Twitter Twitter has often been described as the “SMS of the Internet”. It’s an easy way to the keep the school community updated with short announcements (140 characters). It’s accessibility from mobile devices means that updates and readership can happen anytime, anywhere. By “re-tweeting”, schools can also keep their followers informed of news from other appropriate parties such as DfE, business partners, local groups etc.

By giving each teacher access to the school’s instagram account, you can quickly and easily provide a fun snapshot of school life. An example of other schools using instagram can be found here: http://schneiderb.com/wiki/schools-using-social-media/schools-using-instagram
