Diaper Cakes are some of the most useful gifts you can give a new mother. They combine creativity, beauty and useful items all in one. They make a beautiful centerpiece, and will make you the hero of the baby shower! This cake in this book would retail for approximately $95 yet it took nowhere near that to make it. You could take the items needed list and check prices in your area to come up with an approximate cost. If you would rather have one made my daughter and myself are available. Contact us at [email protected] A diaper cake can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it. I will give you step by step instructions to make the diaper cake featured on the front cover and then some ideas on variations. Ready? Let’s go!

Items needed Disposable diapers- we used 3 (56 count) packages of number 1 size diapers. We used the Walmart Parent’s Choice brand. Rubber bands- you will need at least 175 regular size and at least 25 extra large, big enough to stretch as big as the bottom layer of the cake. 3 or more small add on gifts- we had a teething doll, pacifiers and a package of booties. Topper- we used an adorable pink rubber ducky. Receiving blanket, something colorful. Assorted ribbons and lace, and tulle. Silk flowers- buy them by the bunch and cut apart, you can get them at Walmart, the Dollar Store or Hobby Lobby. Scissors, tape, straight pins.

The first thing we did was decided where to assemble it. We were using this as a centerpiece on the gift table for a baby shower. We started on another table and quickly decided we needed to put it where it was going to stay. Although after the shower we very easily picked up the whole thing and put it in a car. It survived beautifully.

7

We began by opening all of the diaper packages. Then we took each diaper and rolled it up, with the waistband on the inside. Then secure with a rubber band.

8

I started gathering the rolled diapers in a standing position. After I got a good number in a circle I placed a big rubber band around the whole thing. Use two or three rubber bands around the whole thing if you like.

9

I kept adding more and more diapers inside the rubber band until it got about as big as I thought it should be. I didn’t measure the circumference; you will just have to eye what looks good. It does not have to be exact as it may change later.

10

Just keep adding from all around it must be round. Stop every so often and stand back to get a good look.

11

Finally you will start adding a second and third layer. Keep it round and proportionate. If I had known exactly how cute this was going to turn out and how many folks would ask me to write this I would have counted how many were in each layer. Next time I make one I will count. Be sure to subscribe to my bookstore mailing list at http://pennyraine.com/bookstore to get further updates. As I added to the layers I simply set one on top of another, you could use a wooden dowel in the middle but I didn’t need to.

12

If you look closely it appears to be 4 layers. Actually it is just 3 but the center of the top layer is a rolled up receiving blanket that is taller with diapers around it.

13

After it was all put together it was time to start decorating. Thankfully I have my own personal Martha Stewart type decorator AKA Homemaker Hannah. She helped quite a bit. I took the silk flower bushes and cut them apart with wire cutters. Then I started adding them in here and there.

14

Hannah decided it needed some tulle and grabbed a bunch of 6-inch wide tulle we had left over from a wedding and went to town wrapping it. It was a perfect touch. We then added the duck on top and tucked in the little gifts here and there. We kept rearranging until it looked well balanced.

15

As we kept standing back to take a look we decided it still needed two things. The duck needed a dress, so Hannah pinned a piece of lace around it. Then we grabbed a piece of gingham fabric that we are using in some of the things we are sewing for the baby room. We folded it and added as a ribbon with a big bow in front!

TaDa! Finished product!

Ideas for variations

• You could use different color ribbons and greenery instead

of flowers for a boy

• You could easily use cloth diapers

• You could make it any size with any amount of layers

• You could use small stuffed animals instead of flowers

• You could use 3 tall bottles as the topper wrapped with

ribbon

• You could use rolled up Onesies for the top layer

• You could wrap each layer with tissue paper for a fondant

cake look

• You could put a wide ribbon around each layer

• You could add goodies for Mom instead of all for baby

• Be creative, you could do almost anything with these!
