TaskAs a group, we have been asked by Factor

Productions to produce a portfolio of Primary & Secondary Research.

Work in small groups to source any relevant research.

Use the internet and conventional sources to determine possible market opportunities.

Generate ideas and form an initial proposal for the product launch.

Page 3: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Questionnaires: I want to find out how long people watch television for, approximately a day.

This information will help me decide how long to air the programme for.

I am going to get this information by creating a Questionnaire and handing it out to my friends and family, as well as the general public.

Quantitative. 8/3/2015

Surveys: I would like to ask people what sorts of programmes are missing on Channel 4, and what they would like to see as a new feature.

This information will help me decide a suitable genre of programme to produce and air on Channel 4.

I am going to use an online site to create a survey and gather statistical ideas and opinions from people.

Quantitative. 8/3/2015

Interviews: I will talk to a group of Channel 4 representatives and ask them ways in which I can create a television programme to compete with other programmes.

This information will give me ideas of what to have in my programmes, and what unique styles I need in order to compete with their other Channel 4 programmes.

I will have some conversations with professionals who work at Channel 4, and ask them for individual ideas for when I create my new television show.

Qualitative. 8/3/2015

Internet forums: Gather information and opinions from members of the public about what channels they would like to see on Channel 4.

This information will help me, as I am asking a range of people about their views and opinions about the Channel 4 programmes, and what other programmes they would like to see.

I will get this information by asking questions and creating polls online for people to answer.

Qualitative. 8/3/2015

Group discussions/Audience Panels:

Gather information and opinions from members of the public about what channels they would like to see on Channel 4.

This information would also help me to pick a genre of programme for Channel 4, and what extras they would like.

I am going to get this information by doing focus groups and talking to members of the public.

BriefFrom the Secondary research we have

gathered, there is deemed to be a gap in the market for a documentary show talking about political and day-to-day issues. The show will be aired on Friday evenings and Saturday evenings, from 8-9:30pm for family purposes, talking about topics that are currently making headlines within the media.

The programme will be called “Stereotyping the Nation”.

questionnaire.

I would like to ask people what sorts of programmes are missing on Channel 4, and what they would like to see as a new feature.

I will talk to a group of Channel 4 representatives and ask them ways in which I can create a television programme to compete with other programmes.

Gather information and opinions from members of the public about what channels they would like to see on Channel 4.

I am going to do some of my own research and speak to some people who work at the studio and see how much some of the equipment costs.

Questionnaire 1- Personal Information

Demographics

In my first Questionnaire which is a total of 6

questions, I have asked questions relating

specifically to the people to find out more about the individuals. My intended

audience for the new Documentary show is

either gender in the age groups of between 19&25,

or 26&40, as 19 is preferably the youngest

age, as there may be some graphic content, and 40

the max because anybody above that age may not be interested in some of the

topics showed.

Heterosexual HomosexualBisexual OtherPrefer not to say

For the first question that I asked, I wasn’t sure how many people were going to take my survey, but when I found out that 51 people participated, it helped me to gather a lot more results.

I do have a lot more male friends on my social networking sites so I was expecting this, but for 18 females to have also participated, that is really good. The minority was females, but that doesn’t effect the rest of my results.

The majority of people that took my questionnaire were aged between 19 and 25 years old. The next largest result was people aged between 26 and 40 years old, as I went to Enfield and Southgate several times during March, April and June and asked people to just fill out some answers to my questionnaire. Most of the people that I asked were between the ages of 19 and 40, hence why that is the majority of my results.

Nobody that I surveyed was younger than 10 years old, which is a positive thing, because if I am going to be making a documentary show about knife crime or relationships for example, we don’t want those younger children to be scarred for life.

Out of the respondents who took the questionnaire, 19 stated that they were Heterosexual, followed by 12 who were Homosexual, 4 who were Bisexual, 2 who said that they were of a different orientation and 1 who preferred not to say.

The majority of people that were taking my questionnaire were White, followed by Black/African American (9), Other ethnic origins that weren’t stated (6), Asian/Pacific Islander & American Indian (1). Nobody that took my survey was a Native American or Latino/Hispanic.

When reviewing the countries that my respondents were from, I realised that most of them were from England (40), followed by Greece (9) and America (8). This helped me to identify a gap in the market to have different languages of the programme. I would be able to purchase speakers who can talk the language of Greek, Spanish or French, for example, and I could have multiple versions of the programme so that people in their own countries can still understand and give their views/opinions about the shows.

Questionnaire 2- TV PreferencesFor my 2nd Questionnaire, I wanted to ask questions relating to the individual preferences of television programme. When I wrote out this question, I thought that I needed to re-phrase it, otherwise it is sort of making them sway towards watching documentaries. I decided to change the wording of the question and have a multiple choice Question & Answer instead of, “Do you like…”

Page 11: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Questionnaire 2- TV PreferencesThese are the questions for my 2nd Questionnaire. There are 5 questions in total, and these questions relate to the preferences of the individuals. I hope to find out the most popular genres of television programme to help me decide whether I should create a documentary show, and the topics that should be covered in a television show.

I also would like to know the amount of time that people generally watch television for, so I can plan the start and end time for my show, and not bore people. I have also asked for topics that they would like to be spoken about on the show, as it is a public debating show where members of the public will come on television to talk about something that they are passionate about.

the most?

Comedy Documentary HorrorScience Fiction Romantic ThrillerWestern Other

For my 2nd Questionnaire, I wanted to ask what genre of television programme people preferred to watch. The majority popularity was Documentary with 25 responses, followed by Thriller (11) and Comedy (9). I feel as if a Documentary show can include both thrilling stories and some stories that make you laugh. I would like it to be an adult family programme, and like I said before, aimed at males and females above the age of 19 preferably.

How many hours of tele-vision do you watch daily?

Less than an hour 1-2 hours3-4 hours More than 5 hours

When I asked how many hours they think the show should be aired for every Friday and Saturday it is shown, I had lots of various times from 10 minutes or during advert breaks, to 3,4,5 hours long. The majority of my respondents said that they watch TV averagely for 1-2 hours (29), followed by Less than an hour (6 respondents), 3-4 hours (3 respondents) and lastly, the minority response was More than 5 hours (said by 2 people). I feel that this result can be helpful, as it helps me to decide how long to air the show for. From these results, I think that anytime between 1 hour and 3 hours should be long enough, and because it will be aired on 2 days, I could have several hours of the show on one day, and several hours on the other day; Every 30 minutes being on a different topic.

Creationism- (Possible Topic)Creationism is the belief that the universe and living organisms originate from specific acts of divine creation, as in the biblical account, rather than by a natural process such as evolution.

Some people say “Why is Creationism so important?”.

Answer: If you are asking why biblical creationism is important, you’re basically asking why there are foundations to a building. It is foundational to the Christian faith and is believed by many to have been established in the book that God created. “In the beginning God created” is a statement that affirms creationism and opposes any view that embraces evolutionism, such as that the world started with a bang and has been evolving ever since.

Since researching about the topic of Creationism, I found that there were many Internet Forums and Social Network pages relating to the topic, with members of the public having conversations amongst themselves to try and get all of the answers.

Personally, the topic of Creationism isn’t the most interesting topic, but it is something that I have understood as it is something that all children should be taught in schools, as it is just as important as topics like knife crime, sex, racism, relationships and terrorism.

Should "Creationism" be taught in schools?

YesNoPrefer not to sayI don't know what it is

“Creationism is the belief that the Universe and Life originate from specific acts of divine creation.“

“For young Earth creationists, this includes taking a Biblical literalism to the Genesis creation narrative and the rejection of the scientific theory of evolution.”(Wikipedia

)

From this research, the people that didn’t want to answer could have been religious and would not have wanted to answer the question for personal reasons, but the 25 people that agreed with the statement was quire a shock result for me, but shows that people would be interested or eager to learn about this topic, and maybe this specific episode would get a lot more views due to the topic’s uniqueness and the

popularity of the subject choice.

I decided to do some of my own research and see whether people’s opinions were for or against the topic of Creationism, and when the results came

back, I was quite shocked with the results.

25 people said “Yes”.14 people said “No”.

12 people said “I don’t know what it is”.4 people said “Prefer not to say”.

Extra question (Questionnaire 2)

Page 16: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Survey- Quick Fire QuestionsI didn’t really have enough ideas to create my own survey, so I just made up some of my own quick fire questions which I was going to ask

members of the public. I went to my local area, Southgate and set up a stand in order to seem a

little bit professional. Some of the questions that I decided to ask, included:

(1) Topics that are not really covered on Channel 4.

(2) Features/Topics that could be added to get more people involved.

(3) Public Participation.I spoke to a man called Scott, aged

18 and he said that topics not covered, are programmes to do with coping with children and anything to do with stereotyping teenagers and

how their generation is all bad. I then went on to ask him about

whether a Documentary show would be a good idea, and he nodded and

said yes, but to remember to include popular/headlining topics.

I also spoke to Linda, 32 from Winchmore Hill. I asked her whether on not Public

Participation should be included within the show and she said “No, otherwise there might be some arguments and the show could stop shortly after”. She continued, and said that other features should be added to the show,

such as voting for the next topic to be spoken about, or for them to do live shows, where

they get people off of the streets to talk about an issue/problem that could be secretly trying

to sort out.

Interview 1- (Face to Face)-Face to Face interview with Karen, a 22 year old teaching assistant at my Primary School-I began the conversation with “Hi Karen, I am currently undergoing some Primary Research to gather information about people’s tastes in programmes. My intended audience for my programme are people aged 19 and over, male or female.

Do you watch television, and if so, how long do you watch it for daily? (Approximately)I watch television everyday with my boyfriend (21), and we watch whatever is on the television.

If I was to create a Documentary show, would you be interested to watch it?Yes, if the topics on the show were interesting. If the topics were to do with Science, then I would not watch it.

Fair enough. What topics would make you intrigued to watch the show?Erm, anything related to sports would be interesting for my boyfriend, but I would watch it, if the topics were maybe related to animals, children or something controversial such as abuse, racism, murder, terrorism or culture. I feel that these topics will teach me something about life, and are often interesting to know about for the future.

In terms of the timing, how long do you think the show should be & how often do you think it should be aired?

Well, if it is a documentary show then I think Friday is a good day due to no work the day after for the majority of people. I also think that Saturday mornings and/or Saturday evenings would also be good as again, most people won’t have work, and these times are very popular for people to want to watch television.

Page 18: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Focus Group- Teenagers (16-17) For my 1st focus group, I decided to gather a group of 9 teenagers to discuss

ideas about my new creation for a documentary show.

The questions that I decided to ask the teenagers were:

(1) How long do you watch television for approximately daily?(2) Who are you most likely to watch television with?(3) What is your favourite television genre?(4) Have you watched a documentary in the past?(5) When gathering information, do you learn better by graphics or by text.(6) What topics do you think should be included for the new documentary show?(7) When do you think the show should be aired on television?

Page 19: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Focus Group Analysis When reviewing the answers given by the teenagers, I felt that they were intrigued

and possibly excited by the idea of a new television documentary show. Here are some of the other quotes that the people said while the conversation was still ongoing…

“Documentaries are not typically something that I would watch all the time, but if the issue being spoken about is in my interest or beliefs, then I am not afraid to talk about it to my friends, family or teachers”

“Being a young person, I feel that we are often stereotyped as not being interested in the news or politics, but I feel as the younger generation, that’s more of a reason to want to join in and get involved with the different causes and problems in the world. I would certainly take part in a documentary show talking about a specific issue I have with something in the world”

“I feel like the creation of a new documentary show is needed, as we are stuck with the same programmes that everyone is used to, and a change needs to come”

“I tend to not care about politics or issues that are happening around the world, as they are often people being shot or murdered, things I dislike. The idea for a new documentary show would possibly be good, as you can get different ages and genders of people to talk about their problems, which could involve gangs, violence, crimes, sexual health problems, domestic abuse, naughty children, all the way down to the smallest issues such as bad punishments in schools. I feel as if documentary shows should evolve and think of new ideas, to make people like myself who are not interested in this type of stuff, become interested.

Page 20: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Set:The set is very important when creating documentary shows and can cost up-to £200,000 according to a Channel 4 representative who I spoke to the other day called Mitchell. He was very helpful and gave me a lot of information that I needed to find out.

Lighting:Mitchell, a worker who I spoke to, also gave me some information about the lighting and said that they use several lights, including “Tungsten” and “LED” lighting kits.

Crew:The crew is probably the most technical part of the production process. You need to make sure that they are available on all the days that you need them to be free on, and always have a backup just in-case the original person is not available or present on any day.

Cast:The cast is also very important part of creating a show or a music video because you need to give people their lines, actions or phrases to say, just like the presenters on a talent show. All the comedic lines are scripted and given to the hosts or contestants just before the show.

Camera:There are many cameras used when creating a professional scene on a stage or a musical performance. Cameras that are most used are Canon’s, and in particular the Canon 5D Mark II, as the quality comes out very well.

Page 21: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Studio Our building was purchased by collecting funding from members of the public and other organisations. We decided to buy an office building with multiple relaxation areas, as well as large desks and a multi-stored kitchen.

We hope to re-decorate the studio with bright lights, as well as some new material for the floors. We also hope to purchase some well designed and well handled chairs, with glitter, colours and sparkling lights. We want to make the speakers feel comfortable, and be as less scared as they can be.

Page 22: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Studio Plan

This is how we intend to lay out the office rooms, into a studio. We have given ourselves a budget of £7,000 in order to make a show like this.

Cameras- The cameras that we are going to purchase will be £500 each (500*3) = £1,500.

Microphone- A microphone needed for the talker(s) and the host will be £120 each (120*3 maximum) = £360.

Tripod- The tripods will cost £300 each (300*3) = £900.

Cast- The cast will be free, apart from having to pay their salary which is not included in our budget.

Studio- The office rooms that we using will cost us £250 per use (Daily Charge £250* 8 hours maximum) = £2,000.

Lighting- The lighting will cost £150 in total for daily rent of the 3 lights (Back & 2 Soft box) = (150*3) = £450.

Total cost per session: £5,210

Page 23: Creative Media BTEC- "Unit 3- Primary Research"

Final ProposalFrom the primary and secondary research I have gathered, I am still going to go

forward with my original idea of making a Documentary show. I feel as if my research has given me more ideas that I could interpret and use along with my

idea of making a Documentary show, and has helped me to identify a wider audience. When I began the project, I was thinking of aiming the programme at boys and girls 19+, but then when I did the focus alongside people aged between 16 and 17 maximum, I felt as if they are also interested and see potential in the

show.I have decided to name the show “Stereotyping the Nation, as many of the topics

will be related to the younger generation. The show will be co hosted by some celebrities who may have gone through past experiences of gangs, violence,

domestic abuse, etc. I will make the show run on a Friday evening and a Saturday evening, as I felt from my interview with Karren the primary school teacher, and some of the youngsters from my focus group, that they were the

best times, or the hot points of when people watch television the most.

Looking at some of the other competitors has helped me to work out the positive and negative ideas that I can take, and improve on, to interpret all positives into my new show. I feel that if I can top the ideas already on the market, that I will

have no problem with creating a successful show alongside my fellow team mates. Finally, if our budget of £7,000 is enough to help fund for the television programme for 2 days a week, then we will hopefully try and go ahead of our

competitors and gain a lot more money and therefore become more popular in the documentary show market.
