DRIVE SCREWSWITHOUT THE SPLITSTIRED OF RUINED BOARDS AND SLIPPEDJOINTS? TRY THESE TIPS.Drill ItA pilot hole is key whendriving screws, but don'tforget the countersinkthe tapered undersideof a screw head can actas a wedge.Glue ItUse wood glue as a damp.It provides holding powerso boards stay put. Applya small bead to parts, assemble, and align theedges. Let dry fo r 15 minutesbefore drilling pilots anddriving screws.

Clamp ItOne hole, one screw, repeat. When you need to drivenumerous screws to holdparts together, drill anddrive each screw separately.A drill bit can follow woodfibers and create unwantedmisalignments, so drillingmultiple holes all at oncemay not be as efficient asyou think.Control ItMost drills have two speedsettings. Use them! Highspeed is great for drilling, while the slower settingprovides torque and greatercontrol when d riving screws.

LEARN HOW TO DO IT BETTERq: I recently painted a child'srocking horse that I built from pine. The project turned out great untilI painted it . When the paint dried,I could see discoloration whereverthere was a knot in the pine. Howcan I prevent this?a: That d iscoloration is caused bythe resin in the knots bleed ingthrough the primer and paint. Welike to use a good stain-blockingprim er such as BIN from Zinsser. The main purpose of a standardprim er is to act as a bo nd ing agentbetween the materia l being paintedand the pa int. However, BIN pr imercontains a substance called shellac,wh ich acts like a sheet of plasticto provide optimal stain-blockingperformance. BIN b locks stubbornstains from water/smoke damageand tree resin, p lus it prevents odo rsfrom seeping through. Next t ime, prime the who le board and if youstill have some trouble areas when

the primer has dried, spot treatthose with a second coat. A llow thepr imer to dry and then apply twotopcoats of oi l or latex paint.

q: Making a project with doorsalways scares me-1'11 make a greatproject, build a perfect door, andthen ruin it because I can't ge t thehinges on properly. They alwaysshift when I am marking or drillingthe holes. Help!a: Installing a do or should no t bea frightening exper ience. It shouldbe a reward ing one- though we'l ladm it it used to scare us, to o, untilwe d iscovered the magic of doubleface tape. Apply a small p iece to th eback of one side of the hinge andset the hinge in position on the door.Predri ll your holes and d rive thescrews; repeat for the other hingesand the second hinge leaf and instal lin the door opening.

Remove the steel screws and separate boards.Sand any stray fibers at each screw hole locationthat may prevent the boards from laying t ighttogether; ap ply woo d glue and "damp" the boardsback together with the steel screws; let dry. Peel onlyone side of the polycarbonatebacking before spraying to prevent anyoverspray on the opposite side. When thefinish drtes. remove the remaining backing.

    WOODWORKERS I WINT ER 2011

Make the Doors Before you begin, you need to know thede finitions of door parts: The sti le is the verticalcomponent, like a fence post; the horizonta l partsare ca lled ra ils. From the remaining 1x 3 material, cut the doorstiles Kand rai ls l to length (Cutting list). Use a pocket hole jig to drill, glue, and secure therails to the stiles (Photo 4 , page 16). Secure the two rails to one stile, and t hen fl ip itover and join the second stile to complete the doorframe assembly. To complete the doors and hide the pocketholes from sight when you open the doors, use oakpocket hole plugs to fill the screw ho les. Apply asmall amount ofwood glue to the holes and set thep lugs in place. When the glue has cured, sand thedoors smooth. Take the assembled doors and ask a Lowe'sassociate to trim a piece of cl ea r po lycarbonatefor the doors. To do it yourself, you can cut thematerial using a table saw and a fine-cut, carbidetooth blade. The polycarbonate should be cut X /narrower than the door assembly and to the sameheight as the door. Sand the edges smooth with 150-gr it sandpaperand apply Va lspa r frosting spray fo llow ing thedi rections on the can; this adds a nice decorativefinish and also helps concea l the contents of yourcabinet (Photo 5).

When drilling the screw holes. be sure touse a tape flag positioned Y2" up from theend of the drill bit to prevent drilling allthe way through the door frame .Place th e tower on its side and center thedoors in the openings be fore drilling pilotholes and affixing the door frame. See thetip on page 3 to make your hinges slick .

Put It All Together Using masking tape, position the polycarbonateon the door X6" away from the hinge edge andflush to the top, bottom, and remaining edge. Lay out evenly spaced holes for the hinges andscrews (Phot o 6). Along the hinge edge of thedoor, drill Ji" pilot holes for screws and trim washersand ,6" holes for door handles. Apply finish to the door assembly. When finishhas cured, secure hinges to the door edge andmount the doors (Desk). centering the doors in theopening between the she lf edging D (Phot o 7). From the remaining 1 x 2, cut two door catchblocks M and secure them to the underside of theshelves, centering them on the length of the shelfedging. Secure by predrilling and driving two 11A flathead wood screws pe r block. Stand the tower up and ad d the polycarbonatesheets to the door, securing with screws, trimwashe rs, and the door handle. Add the magnetic catches and the strike plates. Move the tower and desk components into placeand complete the desk assembly by attaching thedesk to the tower. Secure the desk by driving screwsthrough the pocket holes in the desk edging andthe desk back bottom rail- the desk surface shouldbe 29 inches above the bottom of the tower side . Secure the tower to wall studs using 2)f' flatheadwood screws.CUTTING LIST

W th all the great drill kits out there and al l of the choices of battery types andvoltages staring at you from the store shelves, determining the best tool foryour needs can be a chal lenge. Shopping is simple though with this smallkit from DeWalt, which loads all the features (and power) of larger too ls into a packageas much at home in the kitchen utility drawer as it is in the shop. And with lithium-ionbatteries on board, more power comes in a smaller package-nine t imes more wattsper pound than nickel-cadmium batteries. On one charge, the kit's impact drove 1102W deck screws and the drill/driver made enough pocket holes to bu ild 1 bo okcaseslike the one shown on page 6. Lithium-ion batteries hold their charge, too, which meanscasual users don't have to recharge every time the tool is needed. You can replace afew cabinet knobs in January, install a new address sign in March, and find that whenit's time to replace some fence boards in July, you'll still have charge in the battery.
