The word is spreading and an increasing number of child care providers are taking a close look at the “Career Lattice.” The Department of Early Learning (DEL), with input from more than 40 other early learning organizations, developed the Career Lattice to provide a suggested education pathway for early learning professionals.

There are 15 steps on the lattice, each of which represents increased training and education in our field. Listed on the lattice are classes that we offer: classes that support the CDA and the stackable “Initial Certificate” (see related article), as well as CSEFEL workshops (developed by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning.)

The Early Childhood Education Initial Certificate is recognized statewide as the first stackable certificate. It is “stackable” because additional college courses can be stacked on top of it, in stages, to eventually achieve higher levels of college education. In Washington this certificate is recognized as an equivelant to the CDA.

CCAC’s 2012-2013 CDA Cohort officially ended on June 4, 2013.

The 15 family home providers and 8 center providers who attended weekly classes together are now at various stages of completing their portfolios and applying for their Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials. We would like to congratulate Rachael Miller, Amy Capen, and Debra Walter, who not only have completed their classes, but have finished their written work, as well.

Students in the Cohort attended class together every Tuesday night, and one Saturday per month, for about nine months. They took classes in eight different subject areas. Each provider benefited not only from the content of the classes, but from the sharing that took place between providers. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share ideas and resources, and hear diverse points of view.

CDA CREDENTIALS TO COME FOR 23 PROVIDERSCohort completes classes

Did you know that the Department of Early Learning (DEL) offers cost reimbursement for the classes you take from CCAC? All of CCAC’s classes are taught by state-approved trainers, making the classes eligible for reimbursement.

Professionals who work in licensed child care facilities can access reimbursement through their MERIT professional records. (Previously reimbursement was offered through a contract with the Washington Association for the Education of Young Children (WAEYC).)

Child Care providers who have a MERIT account and a STARS ID may apply 1 time per fiscal year (July 1-June 30), for up to $150 in training reimbursement for classes taken within the previous 12 months. These classes can include the 20 Hour STARS basic training, or annual continuing education classes.

To apply for your reimbursement, sign in to your MERIT account, go to the “Applications” tab, and select “Training Reimbursement.” Follow the steps to confirm your personal information and select the classes for which you would like to be reimbursed. Remember: you can only apply 1 time each fiscal year; you may wish to wait until you’ve reached the $150 limit. Reimbursements are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and funding is limited for each fiscal year.
