Glazes fascinate with their especiallylively character: Whether decentlyglowing or powerfully vibrating, whetheron the façade or indoors, whether ofsubtle simplicity or spectacular finesse –the directness of their effects capturesthe eye.

The opportunities for the creativedesigner are almost endless. Everythingis possible, working tone in tone ormulti-coloured or in combination withinnumerous design techniques, such asdabbing with a sponge, rolling a rag orspeckling. The transparency of the glazecan also be diversely modified. Nomatter which one of the manifoldtechniques is used: the matte, noblecharacter of a skilfully applied mineralglaze is always a good choice to addthe kind of life to a wall that almost givesit the appearance of a piece of art on itsown.

As diverse as the number of availabletechniques, are the areas in whichmineral glazes can be used. Glazes areused for high-quality restoration ofmonuments, but also inside and outsideof buildings with a modern architecturalambience. This gives façades andinterior walls a special visualaccentuation.

Glazes are also perfectly suited for the“refining” of different substrates. Theotherwise plain looking concrete canbecome astonishingly alive through atreatment with glaze. The structure of thebuilding material - with possibly stillvisible texture of the wooden shuttering– creates surprising effects.

The system products KEIM Design-Base and KEIM Design-Fixativ are added todefine the desired degree of transparency, which open up unimagined possibilitiesfor design. They improve the application consistence, lower the sedimentationbehaviour and provide a longer open time.The combination of Design-Lasur and Design-Base is specifically recommended foroutdoor use (optimal weather-resistance by higher film thickness). By using KEIMDesign-Fixativ, however, highly translucent designs and glaze coatings in strong andbrilliant colours can be realized. 9

The traditional Grisaille and mono-chromatic painting, as decorativepainting technique that follows thepurpose of imitating decorativestructures and sculptural ornaments,is mainly suitable for ornamentaldecoration and also for tasks in the fieldof general architectural painting. Theapplied technique orientates itself onone colour of which then four to fivegradations are produced. The mediumtone, the so-called “local tone”, is at thesame time also the basic tone.

While previously mostly earth pigments,such as ochre, green earth andreddish pigments were used are nowincreasingly modern colours leadingwithin this very traditional technique.

The design options are highly diverse.They range from ornamental façadeand pedestal decoration to elaboratearchitectural painting andgenerously designed sacred areas.

Working with chalks is part of the artist’snatural repertoire already for a longtime. However, with today’s pastelchalks and crayons it was impossible torealise weather-resistant chalk paintingson mineral bases. This has changed. Thenew KEIM Silicate Chalks contain purelyinorganic colour pigments, additives andbinders and/or fixation agents. Thismakes an optimal and weather-resistantbond between the painting and themineral substrate possible.

KEIM Silicate Chalks are a mediumwhich opens creative, independent, andpreviously unknown new options fordesign.

Marble was always considered as beingprecious. Marble, valued by almost allcultures as the most prestigious material,is still a sign of exclusivity today. Ingeneral, marbleising falls under the termstone and marble painting, becauseoften not only marble but also otherattractive types of stones are imitated.This technique has its origin in thePompeian culture.

In the course of time marble paintingsbecame a natural part of creativetechniques. The modern and lessextensive counterpart of the originalmarble painting is the so-called smoothmarble or stucco lustro.

To decorate their buildings, already theGreeks and Romans, the Chinese andJapanese used stencils to portrayornaments, because it was easier andless time-consuming. Stencil paintingreached its peak here during thehistoricism era, where it was especiallycultivated in the sacral ambit, and also inthe civil architecture at the end of the19th and the beginning of the 20thcentury.

The effect created by constantlyrepeating patterns having exactly thesame shape, which may change incolours and rhythm, however, canfascinate observers even today.

In defiance of a time of steel and glassarchitecture and all of the efficientconstruction concepts, ornamentalpainting experiences a new revival.

The muralist has access to a rich anddiverse ornament repertoire to decoratebuildings. Dominant in the preservationof historical monuments are three majorornament styles: the Roman style withRoman, oriental, pagan and Christianforms and motives; the gothic style withelements like pointed arches, and theheraldic style with elements likemonograms and coat of arms.

1. Base filling:Approximately

600-800 g/m² of KEIMStucco-Classico is applied

across the entire areawithout pressure. Thematerial may not be

densified after application(Image A).

2. Intermediate filling: Afterthe base filling is dried,

approximately 300 g/m² ofKEIM Stucco-Classico are

applied in a “crosscoating”manner with a Stucco-trowel.Applying the filler manuallymainly determines the finalappearance of the surface.

During this processdensifying or levelling is also

not allowed (Image B).

3. Finishing filling: After theintermediate filling is dry,only approximately 100g/m² of KEIM Stucco-

Classico are applied in a“crosscoating” manner

(Image C).

4. Grouting: With the startof the drying process the

grouting of material begins.First the surface is densifiedwith low and later on with

increasing pressure. This pro-cess of densifying finallycreates the Stucco-typicalbrilliance (Image D).

Already the old masters knew how to“deceive“ observers in a surprisinglypleasing manner with clever constructedspatial effects. This special type ofarchitectural painting began alreadyduring the times of Pompeii. It finallyreached its peak during the Baroqueera. Since the 19th century this type ofpainting is known as Trompe l’œil(“deceive the eye“).

The aim of illusionistic painting is tofinally lead an observer to realise aperfectly realistic painting as a realobject, to actually “fool” the observerseye. This is accomplished by aperspective way of painting, which isbased upon strict compliance with therules of vision.

The realisation that the pure functionalityof a construction is not sufficient to fulfilthe needs of its residents is surelydecisive in increasing the significance ofwall and architectural painting.

The whole is more than thesum of its parts – this is especially truefor designing interiors and buildings.
