The Stratford Perth Community Foundation (SPCF) celebrated “all for community” this past June at the fourth Community Impact Celebration held at the Best Western Plus The Arden Park Hotel in Stratford. The event, presented by Blue Branch, once again featured SPCF Honorary Patron and fund holder Lloyd Robertson as the Master of Ceremonies.

Bringing together donors, charitable organizations and community leaders the SPCF announced the 2018 grant recipients that received over $260,000 to support important programs and projects throughout Stratford, St. Marys and Perth County. This year’s grants achieved a new milestone with over $1 million invested locally since 2004. “Reaching this signifi cant milestone for our grant program was possible because of the kindness and generosity of so many supporters,” says Heidi Culliton, Executive Director of the Foundation. “At the heart of our mission is

our passion to help individuals and businesses establish legacies that will support vital community programs today, tomorrow and for always. It is a privilege to be a part of and celebrate these connections.”

SPCF Chair, Dennis DesRosiers presented updates on the Community Foundation’s strategic plan and the ongoing development of regional Smart & Caring Community Funds in Stratford, St. Marys and the four municipalities of Perth County. These “community funds” are built by the community they represent and will benefi t that community for generations to come.

Debra Swan, Executive Director of The Local Community Food Centre and Lisa Wilde, Executive Director of the Emily Murphy Centre shared the impace SPCF grants have had on their programs and the communities they serve.

One of Dennis DesRosiers’ childhood memories is from his aunt and uncle’s farm in LaSalle, Ontario. Dennis was eight years old, sitting in their kitchen eating his Aunt Edie’s jam squares when his Uncle George invited him out to his workshop to do some woodworking. A little while later he nished his rst piece: a crèche for his mother’s nativity scene, a treasured piece he still displays at the holidays. at time spent in his uncle’s shop sparked a lifelong passion for woodwork.

Dennis grew up with his parents and ve siblings in a small home in Windsor, Ontario. His mother was a homemaker and avid

volunteer and his father was a mechanic who never wanted his son to work on cars. Although his parents didn’t have much, they were able to pass on strong values including one his father believed passionately and repeated often “Be generous to a fault and expect nothing in return.” Something Dennis pursues to this day through the giving of his time, talent and treasure.

With eight people living on one income, there was no money to send the kids to post-secondary school. Dennis worked hard as an electrician in the summers and his boss and mentor, who knew the importance

of an education, paid him enough to be able to attend university. He attended the University of Windsor and nished with a degree in Economics. Despite his father’s e orts, Dennis found a way to work on cars becoming Canada’s leading auto analyst. He has since established scholarships at both the University of Windsor and Georgian College for students enrolled in automotive programs. His way of paying it forward to help the students facing nancial barriers to education.

Dennis married the love of his life, Lucy, a high school teacher, 43 years ago and they have one daughter. ey’ve lived in Toronto for many years building his company, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc.

On one fateful trip to the Stratford Festival eatre to celebrate his 50th birthday, he ran into a friend from the auto industry and visited his century home near St. Marys. From that chance encounter, he envisioned retiring here to pursue his passions: theatre, gardening and, of course, woodworking.

With retirement years away and a daughter attending Columbia University in New York City, his pursuit of a country home was put on hold. Eventually he discovered a historic stone house located in Perth South that was the birthplace of Prime Minister Arthur Meighen. In addition to the historical relevance, the property had something special that intrigued him – a 1,400 square foot outbuilding that he could convert to his own wood shop.

Shortly after purchasing the house, Dennis reached out to his local contacts and started to get involved in the community. He volunteered with a few organizations and felt welcomed from the beginning. Around that

time, Dennis was introduced to the Stratford Perth Community Foundation (SPCF) and was encouraged to get involved to share his expertise. He jumped in with both feet and is currently the Board Chair for the Foundation.

It didn’t take long for the Foundation to witness Dennis’ generosity rsthand. For his 65th birthday, instead of a celebration, Dennis decided to put out a challenge to his family, friends and colleagues: if they donated to the Foundation in lieu of gifts, he would personally match a percentage of the donations. His hopes of raising $65,000 for his 65th was surpassed within a few weeks. He was overwhelmed by the support. e money raised created the DesRosiers Endowment for the Advancement of the SPCF, supporting the operational needs of the organization by providing a sustainable income source for the Foundation, forever.

Dennis and his wife Lucy continue to live between Toronto and Perth South with dreams to fully retire soon and relocate permanently. During his time here he spends many hours in his wood shop creating pieces to donate to organizations as a way to raise money for local causes. He would love to be able to do this full time.

When asked what he would like to be remembered for, Dennis responded “I want to ful ll my father’s caring advice to be generous to a fault and asking nothing in return,” says Dennis. “I ask myself daily, how can I be more generous? I would like to be remembered as someone who is committed to paying it forward.”

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MOVEMENT AND INVEST IN YOUR COMMUNITY’S FUTURE

e Stratford Perth Community Foundation (SPCF) is part of the Canadian movement for community vitality. With 191 community foundations across the country, we are connected by a national network to help Canadians invest in building strong and resilient places to live, work and play. We connect people, families and companies with causes that inspire them. We pool resources, knowledge and expertise, working with others for even greater impact by helping people give back where communities need it most.

More than 90 per cent of Canadian communities have access to a community foundation — from our largest cities to our smallest towns. Collectively we hold combined assets of more than $5.2 billion and we’ve put hundreds of millions back into communities.

THINK OF US AS A COMMUNITY INVESTMENT ACCOUNT

As your local community foundation, we are a charitable organization for everyone and unique because donations to an endowment fund – large or small – are not spent but combined and invested. Earned income is used to provide grants to local charities year after year to build a vibrant not-for-prot sector in Stratford, St. Marys and Perth County. e SPCF is a sustainable funding resource for our region’s ever changing needs and critical priorities.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR YEAR-END GIVING THROUGH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

What are you passionate about? And what impact would you like to have?

You can choose to make a donation to one of the named funds that support a broad range of sectors, from the arts and education, youth, recreation to seniors, health and wellness and the environment. Or make a donation to one of our unrestricted Smart & Caring Community Funds providing local grants in the community of the fund.

What are the benets to donating to the Community Foundation?

All donations will receive a charitable tax receipt. Donations received by December 31st, 2018 can help to reduce your income taxes payable, oset capital gains for the 2018 year or reduce estate taxes. Additionally, your investment in your community will be here beneting the causes and projects you care about now and forever. Your legacy begins today.

How can I give and what are the deadlines?

Giving has never been easier. Donations may be made at our oce in person, by phone, mail or online. e Community Foundation also accepts the transfer of securities. If you are considering making a donation this year, it must be received by our oce by December 31 to be eligible for a charitable tax receipt for the 2018 year.
