Why Have Goals?

‘A GOAL IS A DREAM WITH A DEADLINE’ – NAPOLEON HILLHuman beings are success machines. You are a success machine. Goal achievement fuels and drives us forward leading to fulfilment and a sense of accomplishment. Goals give us clarity and help us focus on what we want - rather than what we don’t want!

Goals keep us accountable, to ourselves not others, and when you keep your promises to yourself, self-trust and self-respect grow enormously.

Goals stretch us, helping us reach our highest potential and be the best we can be.

Write Your Big Beautiful Bountiful Story

What does this year or the next 12 months look and feel like? What do you achieve? What do you learn? Who do you meet? What do you do? What exciting new things come your way and who do you share them with? What steps do you take in your career or business? What drives fulfilment in your relationships? What do you do to improve your health? How are your finances?

It’s an amazing story and it’s all yours! Fill it with wondrous descriptions of what you see, what you hear, what you feel and what you tell yourself. Write down how you know you’ve achieved what you want to i.e. what evidence you’ll have for yourself.

Write pages and pages, in bullets or paragraphs. Get it all out – we’ll distil it later.

Pick a date or choose the end of the year and start like this:

3 Steps to Articulating Your Goals

Pick out the core goals you want to achieve from your big beautiful bountiful year. Make sure you include your goals for work or business or career, your finances, your health, your relationships, your personal growth.

CREATE YOUR GOALS IN A SMART WAY

S = SMART – we want to be specific so we know what to focus on and know when we’ve achieved the goal

M = MEASUREABLE – we want to be measurable so we can track progress and know how we’ve achieved the goal

A = AS IF / ACHIEVABLE – we want to state the goal ‘As is’ i.e. in the present, and feel it’s achievable (even if we don’t yet know how – it’s healthy to have a stretch!) so that our amazing mind assumes completion and finds a way to get there

R = REALISTIC – we want to be realistic but not too easy

T = SMART – we give ourselves a time in which to complete so we’re focussed

2 DESCRIBE YOUR GOALS WITH VAK

V = VISUAL – what will you see as you complete your goal. What evidence will you have to show your achievement?

A = AUDITORY – what will you hear as you achieve your goal, what will people be saying to you

K = KINAESTHETIC (Feel) – what will you feel as you complete your goal, and what will you tell yourself

3 VISUALISE ACHIEVEMENT

Now take a few minutes to visualise achievement of your goal, firstly through your own eyes i.e. the VAK is your experience - Lock it in!

Example of a Well-Articulated Goal

A COMMON GOAL OR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS TO IMPROVE OUR HEALTH AND OFTEN PEOPLE SAY ‘THIS YEAR I’M GOING TO GET FIT.’ SO LET’S TURN THIS INTO A WELL-ARTICULATED GOAL. Ask yourself questions like ‘what does getting fit mean to me?’ It could be that you have completed a race, or can run or cycle for longer or further. It could mean you lose weight or inches. It could mean you can lift heavier weights. It could mean you can buy new clothes. Everyone is different so determine what it means for you and then SMART and VAK your goal.determine what it means for you and then SMART and VAK your goal.

FOR EXAMPLE:

It is 12/05/2017 and I have completed the 8km Mother’s Day Classic run in less than 40 minutes as evidenced by the time on my runner’s watch. As I cross the finish line I see my friends waving and the proud smiles on their faces. I hear the crowd cheering encouragement and I feel amazing as the hot pink running shorts I’m wearing are a size smaller than the ones I wore at the beginning of the year. I tell myself that I am an awesome runner.

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN.

üIs it Specific? Yes – I know what, when and how I’m achieving this goal

üIs it Measurable? Yes – I’ve given myself two measures – the distance and the time, which helps set a training plan with milestones

üIs it As if/Achievable? Yes – I’ve written it as if I’ve already done it, and I know it’s achievable because I have a number of months to train

üIs it Realistic? Yes – I’m reasonably fit from gym work so I’m using my fitness in another way

üIs it Timed? Yes – I’ve set a date for completion

üIs it VAK? Yes – I’ve described what I’m seeing, hearing, feeling and telling myself to make the goal emotionally real

Create Your Goal Tree

HOW DO YOU EAT AN ELEPHANT? ….. ONE BITE AT A TIME! SOME GOALS ARE BIG AND NEED TO BE BROKEN DOWN INTO MANAGEABLE CHUNKS. AND IT IS ALSO GOOD TO FOCUS THE MIND ON WHAT IT IS GOING TO ACHIEVE IN THE NEAR TERM.

Break your goals down into what you are going to achieve for each one in 90 day or quarterly chunks. What key milestones will you complete at the end of each quarter? Then break down to each month. What tasks will you complete each month?

Draw the ‘tree’ on a big piece of paper for your wall, or write each month’s tasks in the notes on your smartphone. Somewhere you can read them every day.

üRead and visualise your goals every day

üFrom your monthly tasks, work out your daily and weekly standards. For example a weekly standard may be ‘I go to the gym X times a week’, a daily standard may be ‘I eat X portions of vegetables a day’

üReview your progress regularly. If you are not achieving what you wanted, review your actions. Are your actions big enough? Have your priorities changed? What can you do differently? What feedback can you use? (Remember - there is no failure only feedback!)

üAnd remember to celebrate every time you complete a milestone. Reward yourself with something you value. You are your own biggest champion, so conspire to your success and cheer yourself on!
