Today is a work day.

We are going to review the actions you have taken to date related to building and maintaining relationships with your stakeholders.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

A point of clarification in question #3.We are asking you to take 5 actions that build relationships with the different stakeholders. You do not take 5 actions for each of the 4 stakeholders you identified in question #2.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

So…you will have 5 total pieces of evidence for question #3.

Also…you can do more than one action for a stakeholder.

For example.

-2 actions to build relationships with parents-1 action to build a relationship with a business in your community-1 action to build a relationship with department in the DOE-1 action to build a relationship with a service organization in your community.

Or…you might to do 2 with parents, 2 with businesses in the community and 1 with a service organization.

The combination is up to you based upon the stakeholders in your community and the needs of your students.

You will use the same procedure for the actions you will take to maintain relationships with your stakeholders.

5 actions with a piece of evidence for each action.

So you will have a total of 10 actions and have 10 pieces of evidence for questions 3 & 4.

Make sure before you take any action that you have checked it out with your administration.Some actions, especially those that involve parents, may not require checking with your administration.Our advice, is always error on the side of caution.

We don’t want you to put yourself in a bad situation.

If you bring people into the building, as speakers or tutors, always clear it with your administration.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

In Colorado, anyone who wants to volunteer at a school must have a background check completed.

This involves going to the district office and getting finger printed and those finger prints sent to the Colorado FBI.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

This does not apply to a parent who wants to come in the school and observe or help their own child, but they can not interact with any other children unless the background check is completed.

A. Identify the stakeholder group…

The business, person, group, district office, service organization, charity, alumni group, etc.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

B. How was the partnership you created with them of mutual benefit.

What we want here is for you to identify how you, your students, their parents, the school and/or the stakeholder both benefit from the action you will be taking.

As we have talked about before, one sided relationships don’t work.

It is only when both parties benefit from the relationship that those relationships grow and become stronger.

Can you think of a relationship in your life where you felt used?

That is not a very good feeling!

So be clear on how the stakeholder will benefit from the action.

How do you create a win-win situation where everyone’s needs are met?

As we talked about last month, everyone has an agenda.

Knowing that agenda allows you to meet the needs of that individual, group or organization.

Do they want to…-Promote their business-Do their job (DOE department, social services, Police, etc.)-Make a difference in children’s lives-Improve the community-Share their expertise-Provide students with opportunities

C. Action taken…this involves what you did to build the relationship.

Be specific about the action you took.

D. Evaluation…

Was it effective?

Make sure your evaluation is based upon some hard data and be specific.

If you took an action to build relationships with parents…-talk about the number of parents who now call you-how many volunteer at school-ask you for your advice about books to buy and read to their children at home

CREATING THE VILLAGE

-ask about how they can help their children with homework-share with you that they have better relationships with their children-have less discipline problems

CREATING THE VILLAGE

If it involved having people come in to tutor…-performance of you student-amount of homework they are now turning in-participation in class

CREATING THE VILLAGE

If you had a speaker come in…-student interest in the subject

A recognition program..-student effort

CREATING THE VILLAGE

Connecting students and/or parents with different services…-less days missed by the student for health reasons-better grades and participation because you connected them with an eye doctor or a hearing specialist

CREATING THE VILLAGE

Evidence…-student grades-student participation-less discipline referrals to the office-emails, letters or notes from parents-pictures of the school grounds before and after a clean up by a business

CREATING THE VILLAGE

-student effort because of a recognition program a business created.

As you discuss things in your group, share the evidence you collected or plan to collect to support your evaluation.

In May, we will review all that you have done and go over the Portfolio page by page so you will be ready to turn it on June 18th.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

We usually ask you to collect evidence from your students in your class for the Portfolio. In this class, we are asking you to collect evidence of the work you will do in building and maintaining relationships with the different stakeholders.

CREATING THE VILLAGE

Because of that, we encourage you to work with other educators in your school in completing the Portfolio.

You will each still need to turn in a separate Portfolio, but please share the information you gather related to the different stakeholders.

Our goal is for each of you to have as many resources as possible and one way to do that is to work collaboratively.

Also, share the strategies you use for building and maintaining relationships with the different stakeholders.
