UCI Writing Project presents...

2017 Annual Literacy Conference for Teachers, Grades K-12

Keynote Speakers:

Stephanie HarveyHarvey “Smokey” Daniels

Thursday, December 7, 20178:00 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

In writing instruction, packaged programs oen shortchange kids’ opportunities to become eective writers. Still enshrined in most states, the Common Core Standards also place an overemphasis on students’ creating occasional, long pieces, either in on-demand situations or as the culmination of a unit of study. ere’s no mention or understanding of writing-to-learn - frequent, short, exploratory writings used throughout the school day to develop uency, build condence, enhance audience awareness, stimulate kid-kid discussions, and advance thinking. Kids need far more writing practice than they are currently getting. Smokey will discuss how to create better situations for them to practice and provide strategies to help them reect, share, savor, and revise.

Stephanie Harvey has spent her career teaching and learning about reading and writing as a public school teacher, a sta developer for the Denver based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), and as a private literacy consultant. Insatiably curious about student thinking, she conducts keynote speeches, presentations, and workshops on K-12 literacy with a focus on comprehension instruction, inquiry-based learning, content area reading and writing, nonction literacy, and the role of passion, wonder and engagement in teaching and learning.

She is the co-author, with Anne Goudvis of the groundbreaking book Strategies that Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding, Engagement, and Building Knowledge and author of Nonction Matters (Stenhouse). Her Heinemann publications include Comprehen-sion and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action, co-authored with Smokey Daniels, and e Comprehension Toolkit series with Anne Goudvis. Her most recent book, From Striving to riving (Scholastic) co-written with Annie Ward shares how to turn striving readers into thriving readers.

Harvey “Smokey” Daniels has been a classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education.

He works with elementary and secondary teachers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, oering demonstration lessons, workshops, and consulting, with a special focus on creating, sustaining, and renewing student centered inquiries and discussions of all kinds.

Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, and Minilessons for Literature Circles and numerous other bestselling books for Heinemann, including e Curious Classroom: 10 Structures for Teaching with Student Directed Inquiry, Subjects Matter, and Content-Area Writing. He also co-authored Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action with Stephanie Harvey.

e research is overwhelming and clear: nothing correlates more strongly with reading achievement than reading volume. e minutes of high-success reading completed each day are the best predictor of reading growth, even above socio-economic factors. Yet the amount of times kids actually read in school continues to decline. Whenever children fall below a benchmark, we tend to throw a program at them. But programs don’t teach kids, teachers do. e truth is we need an intervention on interventions. e best intervention is a good book, one that kids can and want to read. So let’s let them read! Stephanie will explore how to help readers thrive by introducing them to compelling texts, providing plenty of time for reading, and explicitly teaching reading strategies.

Part 1: The Best Reading Intervention is a Good Book

Part 2: The Best Writing Intervention is Writing Practice
