Welcome to our giving and finance brochure for 2013/14. This booklet tells you all you need to know about Emmanuel’s finances and how you can be a part of creating good news with your money.

Soon we will be writing to thank all those who have given financially to Emmanuel in the 2012/13 tax year (which ended 5 April 2013).

INTRODUCTION

Creating Good News With Your Money - FRIDAY NIGHT PROJECTThe Friday Night Project has exploded this year, with children queuing outside the doors, ready and raring to come in, and erupting in cheers when the doors open at 6pm! This year we have got to know over 100 kids that we previously had no contact with, and have been able to demonstrate the love of God to those children and their families. None of this would be possible without your giving!

Earlier in 2013, you may have heard the news that David Beckham signed to play for five months with the French club Paris Saint-Germain. He announced that he would be giving his salary of £800,000 a month to a children’s charity. By the time he finishes his contract, he will have given away £3.3 million.

An example of money creating good news.

We don’t often talk about money in church. In 2012 Emmanuel took part in a survey, along with all the other churches in the Croydon Episcopal Area, called Signs of Growth. One question asked each of us to respond to the following statement:

! “My church makes too many demands on my money” ! 5% said yes! 20% said they weren’t sure! 75% said no.

I find that response very encouraging! We don’t want to be a church which demands people’s money. We want to be a church in which people give generously because they love God and want their money to create good news stories.

Why might you want to give your money to support the ministry here at Emmanuel?

Giving your money is an expression of your love for God.

Being faithful with money is part of being faithful to God.

Some of us might want to keep money and God in separate compartments in our lives. We might be more comfortable seeing discipleship in terms of prayer and worship. We’d prefer not to think about God when we’re doing the shopping or booking our holidays, or checking our investments. But the way

we think about and use our money is an indicator of where we are with God. And part of being a Christian is using your money to bring good news.

When the Apostle Paul wrote the biblical letter we now call 2 Corinthians, one of the things on his agenda was to motivate the Christians in Corinth to create good news with their money. We read about this in chapters 8 and 9. He says that giving away our money is our response to the grace of God which we see in Jesus.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

We use our money to share this good news. Emmanuel exists to share this good news.

It costs over £35,000 a month to run Emmanuel and all of that comes from the giving of our members.

Over the last year we have seen the church grow and thrive in lots of ways. This is very exciting. But it brings with it the challenge that growth costs

TREVOR ON GIVING

Creating Good News With Your Money - MESSY CHURCH OLYMPIC SPECIAL

Last summer we had our first Messy Church holiday club – with three packed days at our Olympic Special! The team hopped, skipped and jumped their way through Bible stories, Olympic themed activities, fabulous food, and there was even the highly competitive 'Dads' race' at our sports day! None of this would be possible without your generous giving!

TREVOR ON GIVINGmoney. Please take some time over the next week or so to think and pray about your own giving to Emmanuel.

In 2 Cor. 8:7 Paul says this:But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

Some churches teach that Christians should give away 10% of their income, although the New Testament does not specify an amount. The Church of England’s guidelines about what Christians should give suggests that we give at least 5% of our income to our local church.

This might present a challenge after you’ve paid your taxes, paid your bills, fed your family etc. but if Christians don’t give to the church and Christian mission, nobody else will.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Yours in Christ,

FINANCIAL REVIEW 2012At our Annual Meeting in 2012, I stated that we expected to run at a deficit of £20,000 or more for the year to 31 December 2012 if income remained static. The books have now been closed and the audit completed and we are showing a deficit of £27,000 for the year.

So what has happened? In summary• we faced some additional unforeseen costs, spending a bit more

than budgeted; and• our income was fundamentally flat

Taking these issues in turn.

CostsWe budgeted for costs of approximately £425,000 (excluding ‘events’ which are expected to be self-funding). In the event, our costs were approximately £431,000. The additional costs mainly relating to expenditure on the church (additional building repairs and higher energy costs), and to increased youth work activity.

Just to be clear, the clergy and staff teams, as well as the PCC and finance team, take very seriously our responsibility as stewards of the financial resources you provide. The PCC is careful and prayerful in its financial decisions and we are certainly not profligate.

The reality is that we are a large, active and growing church and, as Trevor pointed out in a recent sermon, this costs money. Our costs are commensurate with our size and the fruits can be seen in our growth.

We are fortunate in that the legacy received from Winifred Habgood has allowed us to pursue some projects, to invest in our fabric, and to replace equipment that would not otherwise have been possible.

It is undoubtedly the case that we face pressures on costs and will continue so to do in 2013, but I honestly believe that costs are not the problem…

Page 8: Creating Good News With Your Money

FINANCIAL REVIEW 2012IncomeI believe our challenge relates to income – all of which comes from the giving of the church’s members.

What is perplexing is that despite a terrific initial response to the 2012 stewardship campaign, our income for the year remained essentially flat There are a number of reasons for this:

Firstly, the (in some cases) significant increases people made in their pledges were offset by decreases caused by people leaving the church (by moving away, for example). Our figures show that, on average, a leaver was giving £120/month at the point they left, whereas a new joiner (as it were) gives on average £60. Put simply, we have to run fast just to stand still.

Secondly, despite an encouraging initial response, only 50% of our regular givers returned pledge forms, with the giving of the remaining 50% largely static.

Thirdly, the full effect of the reduction in Gift Aid hit us in the year (it was mitigated in 2011 by some donors gifting early).

We have seen fantastic growth in activity and in membership – but this has yet to translate to increased income. In fact, our average giving per member is £80 per month – which compares with guidance from the Church of England that would suggest (based on the anonymised fairer shares data) average giving of £129 per month. Averages can be dangerous, but the truth is that we are an affluent church in (for the most part) a relatively affluent area and we are each called to give as we are given to.

Our finances and giving are one of the most direct ways in which we can express our faith and gratitude for all that God has done for us. And yet, with characteristic English reserve, they are also an area that can be profoundly uncomfortable for us to discuss.

Page 9: Creating Good News With Your Money

9

FINANCIAL REVIEW 2012Throwing all reserve on one side, can I ask you to think about all that God is doing through Emmanuel just now and to cheerfully fill out the pledge form attached with an increased pledge for 2013 and beyond?

If we all increased our giving by an average of £10/head a month the gap in our finances would close.

PS This is the second year we have used this brochure format, we also ran a series of “vox pops” video clips during March and April to engage with the congregation on the issue of giving. We always listen to and appreciate any feedback when we make changes or try out new ideas. Please drop me a line.

Creating Good News With Your Money - WORSHIP NIGHTIn the last 12 months over 75 young people from Emmanuel, and churches across Croydon, have joined togehter to worship and be equipped for living life as teenagers in 21st Century Croydon. What started in the Watney Room has expanded into the church. None of this would be possible without the help of the whole Emmanuel team, a wide range of talented volunteers, and your generous giving!

All Christians are called to respond individually to the call to be involved in God’s mission wherever they are. In addition we can add our support to the individuals and organisations who represent Emmanuel in world- wide mission activities, through which we are fulfilling the great commission of Matthew 28:19-20 and living out our “All for Jesus - Jesus for All” mission statement.

The Global Mission Committee (GMC) leads this aspect of our mission work on behalf of the Emmanuel congregation and encourages every member and home group at Emmanuel to be involved in prayer, practical support (e.g. letter writing / emailing) and financial support of our mission partners. In that way modelling the practices of the first century church and showing our supported partners that we, as a church at Emmanuel, are one with them and supporting them in their work.

Since 2011 giving to the Global Mission Committee work dropped by over 20% and we have had to prayerfully and carefully look at all aspects of our financial support for new and existing mission projects in 2013/2014.

During 2012, we gave more than £64,000 in grants in support of mission further afield. The money was used to support:

• Our own missionaries: Simon and Sue French in Tanzania and Jeremy and Jerica Davies in Kenya

• Other Mission partners: such as Dima and Mahbuba Bazarova in Tajikistan and students at Bishop Barham University in Uganda

• Mission projects and trips: for example supporting summer youth camps in Moldova and a youth worker at St Francis church

• Mission organisations: including Christian Family Concern, Kick London and Croydon Youth for Christ working locally and Tear Fund and Open Doors working internationally.

Emmanuel has a separate Mission Fund administered by the GMC on your behalf. To restore support of our previous commitments we need to reverse the drop in giving to the Mission Fund from £58,000 in 2012 back to the £70,000 given in 2010 and 2011. The chart on page 13 shows how we expect that money to be spent over the coming year to support our mission partners in implementing our vision for mission.

GLOBAL MISSION FUND

Creating Good News With Your Money - MOLDOVAFor the last 5 summers teams of people from Emmanuel have been to Moldova to partner with Chris and Helen Ducker, and the local Moldovan ‘Baptist’ Church to help run Summer Camps for young people and Social Action projects for older people. Easter 2013 saw a team from Emmanuel go and help build a new centre which will provide classes and youth work for young people, and provide care for older members of the community. None of this would be possible without your generous giving!

Page 14: Creating Good News With Your Money

14

All of these can only happen as a result of the generous and sacrificial giving as we each commit our money and our prayers to supporting God’s work locally and around the world in 2013.

If you want to be part of supporting Emmanuel’s vision for global mission and contribute to the Mission Fund in 2013 then please complete the Mission Fund section on the pledge form or contact Mike Samuel (details can be found on page 18). Only money specifically pledged to the Mission Fund will be allocated to supporting mission so please ensure that you complete this section.

More information about global mission activities is available on the GMC notice board in the church foyer and in the weekly prayer news.

Creating Good News With Your Money - EASTER AND CHRISTMAS SERVICESTwo of the highlights of the Emmanuel Croydon year were our Christmas, Easter and Holy Week services. An estimated 5,000 people came into church for these special services.

Christmas saw church transformed into Bethlehem, and Easter saw pews removed and the whole of the front of church morph into an Easter Garden.

The services and hospitality that were offered during these periods was only made possible by a team of over 200 volunteers and your generous giving!

Page 15: Creating Good News With Your Money

15

In 2012 we incurred costs of £431,000, this reflects our current cost base – in terms of staffing, activity and keeping the church heated, lit and running. It also forms the starting point for our budget in 2013.

In 2013, we face increased costs.

These arise from two main sources:• The financial contribution we make to the Diocese (which

supports the ministry of smaller churches in deprived areas). As a direct result of our growth in membership, our assessment for the parish share for 2013 has increased by £16,000.

• Our staff costs. We have appointed Ashley Kerwood as a student youth worker and are supporting both him and Abi Bates, our student children’s worker, in pursuing formal training and qualifications relevant to their work. We also expect to appoint an intern in the Autumn. The incremental costs are about £2,500.

BUDGET 2013

Creating Good News With Your Money - THE ALPHA COURSEThis year we ran an Alpha course for the first time in an number of years and we were encouraged by the faithfulness of God and the response of those who came. In addition to growing in their  relationship with God, finding new purpose for life and making new friends, participants’ comments include:

“I thank God for this amazing opportunity and experience!!!”

“such a great way to learn about Christianity in a gentle way... the small groups give a really personal aspect to the learning.”

“Was a fantastic opportunity to ask the questions you had always wanted to but hadn’t...”

“A structured, non-threatening way to be introduced to the Christian faith”

“Thanks to all of the people who cooked for us. The meals were all delicious!”

Page 16: Creating Good News With Your Money

16

BUDGET 2013To help offset these costs, we continue to monitor other costs closely and expect to see reductions in printing costs and in church repairs in 2013. We have budgeted for savings of £6,000.

The net effect is that we expect total costs of about £443,000.

If income remained at current levels that would result in a deficit of just over £40,000 in 2013.

At the moment one might say that we are cash rich but income poor. We have the resources to cope with a deficit of that order of magnitude but it depletes our reserves.

Furthermore, if giving does not rise to close the gap I would have to question whether that is a sign that the church as a whole is not behind the vision laid out. In that case we would have to revisit our cost base.

In practice, we have a big chunk of unavoidable costs (property upkeep etc) and there is very little that we could cut without affecting activity or our wider ministry. If we reduced our contribution to the Diocese, ministry in poorer parishes would suffer directly. And reducing our staff would dramatically curtail all the fantastic youth work, worship and outreach that we are called to do. Managed decline or vibrant growth? The decision, as they say, is yours.

Creating Good News With Your Money - GROWTH IN SUNDAY SERVICESOur vision for all our services is to be welcoming, growing, Anglican, worshipful and multi-generational; so that people grow in faith and grow in relationship with one another. In September 2012 we launched a new 11am Sunday service which was more accessible for all ages and included a crèche and a programme of activities for 3 to 14 year-olds. The result has been a significant increase in attendance of both adults and children.

INFORMATION ON GIVINGPledge formIf you want to support Emmanuel financially, please complete and return the tear off form at the back of this pack.

The form should be returned to the Treasurer via the church office or by post to 27 Church Hill, Purley CR8 3QP. All information is treated wholly privately and confidentially.

Changes to the formIn previous years, where donors wished to specify a gift to the Global Mission Fund, they were asked to allocate a proportion or amount of their total giving. This year we have changed the form, with the intention of making this allocation clearer.

For 2013 and beyond, we are asking that donors separately identify their pledges of support for the general fund (which covers the costs of running the church and all its activities) and the global mission fund (which covers our outreach). There is space then to add these figures together to reflect the total sum that you wish to pledge. Our finance team will then allocate this according to your wishes.

How we giveThe form provides for donors to give in a variety of ways, standing order, cash, envelopes and cheques.

If you have any practical questions on the pledge form or how to give, please speak to David Martin or Alistair Hynd, whose details are given overleaf.

TaxpayersIf you are a taxpayer, Emmanuel can claim tax back from the Exchequer. Please check the relevant box and we will provide a gift aid declaration form if we do not hold one already.

Creating Good News With Your Money - SUMMER RENDEZVOUSLast August between 30-40 older people spent an Olympic themed week at church taking part in craft, a quiz, music, an outing to Hall Place near Bexley, and were able to take part in various Olympic events ranging from sailing to pole vault. Summer Rendezous is part of a wide range of events run by Emmanuel for older people in the community, all made possible by your generous giving! 17
