CREATING BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES IN
PHOTOSHOP
Photoshop CS6 Tutorial
GOOD AND BAD
Photoshop offers both destructive and non-
destructive techniques to turn your images into
black and White.
DESTRUCTIVE METHODS
Destructive methods are the ones that can’t be re-adjusted
afterwards.
Once you have made the conversion, the only way to change it is
to undo the conversion and start over.
NON-DESTRUCTIVE METHOD
Use Photoshop adjustment layers.
The changes you make to your own photo are
stored in the layer and the original photo remains
unchanged underneath.
ORIGINAL COLOR IMAGE
ADD THE CHANNEL MIXER TO YOUR LAYER
1. In your layers palette select the circle that is half white and half black.
2. Select Channel Mixer from the drop down menu.
Select Monochromatic
By default, Photoshop combined 40% of the Red channel, 40% of
the Green channel and 20% of the Blue
channel to create the initial black and white version of the image.
To increase or decrease the percentage of a
specific color drag the slider to the right or left.
100% RULE
When editing your channel mixer colors
you want the total to equal 100%. If it goes
over 100% images will begin to look over
exposed.
Over 100%
HISTOGRAM
It is also good to leave your Histogram open
(Window > Histogram) because if you see spikes on
the right edge of the panel then you know you are
losing image detail.
