At UVM, the Director of Waste and Recycling, who has been working on campus for more than 20 years said that the Worn Wear event was the best event she has ever organized on campus. The campus received a few boxes of damaged garments from Patagonia, and teams of students upcycled these items into wearable art projects with social and environmental justice messages. In the months leading up to the event, students began asking her for help in learning how to use sewing machines and doing their own repairs. The event became the catalyst for sewing machines to be set up in a permanent space accessible to all students for repair sessions and workshops.

“One of my faculty colleagues in the business school (not previously a sustainability convert) stopped me in the hall this morning to say how dynamic and engaging he found the event. He said his head was still buzzing with ideas about how he could apply these concepts to his teaching and research in hospitality management.”

“I can’t believe how many sweaters I’ve thrown away” At Clemson, PLAN founder Alex Freid was helping a student remove pills from a fleece sweater when she exclaimed “I had no idea this [referring to a sweater stone] existed. I can’t believe how many sweaters I’ve thrown away! Where can I buy one of these?”

Guayaki establishes contract connections with campuses “At UGA, we met with the sustainability director who is helping us get through the coke contract, and at Umass Amherst we met with the Sustainability director who helped us open distribution to 3 locations on campus. Thanks again for including us! You’re making a huge impact. We look forward to collaborating down the road!”

“This event brought many students to light in the campus initiatives towards sustainability. The presence of this large company helped us gain many social media followers as well as a wider range of interest.”

“Patagonia and Worn Wear event definitely peaked student interest in repairing and reusing clothes. Since the event, many students have commented on how simple the fixes made were and how the look forward to engaging in these behaviors moving forward, particularly buying used clothes.”

“Patagonia being on campus shed more light on how a profitable and well-known organization can still be conscious of the environmental injustices taking place. I believe the students walked away from the event inspired and encouraged to learn more about Zero Waste initiatives.”

“I think having the Worn Wear presence helped bring these different groups/initiatives together to ‘rally’ around a SHARED event in a new, creative energetic way. (Way better than a typical ‘environmental info fair’ would do).”
