    Creating a Workshop

A workshop is a peer assessment activity with many options. Students submit their work via an online

text tool and attachments. There are two grades for the student:

    1. Their own work.2. Their peer assessments of other students work.

Moodle Workshops are a great tool for students to view, grade and assess their own and other coursemembers' work as a group. There are many options that can make this educational tool vary in complexity

    and create peer reviewed projects.

    Adding a Moodle Workshop:

    1. Log into your course.2. Click the button.3. Select the desired Topic or Week area in the course outline.4. Click the Add an activity drop-down menu and select Workshop.

    Moodle Workshop Settings:

    5. Enter the Submission Title.6. Enter a Description for the workshop.

Please see items 13 through 31

for explanations of the options inthis image.

an assignment will have something between 5 to 15 assessment items, the actual numberdepending on the size and complexity of the assignment.

    b. All assessments have a General Comments field. For a "No Grading" assignment the valuegiven here determines the number of additional comment areas. It can be specified as zeroand results in the assessment having only a single General Comments area.

11.Enter the Number of Attachments expected on Submissions from the drop-down menu.a. The number entered here determines how many items will be used in the assessments.

Depending on the type of grading strategy, this number gives the number of comments,

assessments elements, bands, criteria or categories (sets) of criteria in a rubric. Typicallyan assignment will have something between 5 to 15 assessment items, the actual number

depending on the size and complexity of the assignment.

12.Enter the Allow Resubmissions option from the drop-down menu.a. By default, students cannot resubmit assignments; they are allowed only one submission.

If you turn this option on, then students will be allowed to submit more than one piece of

work to this assignment. This may be useful if the teacher wants to encourage students todo better work by an iterative process.

    b. The assessment of submissions is allocated on the basis of the number of assessments apiece of work has had. Thus new submissions from a student are likely to be candidates for

peer assessment. However, if a student resubmits a number of pieces of work in quick

succession then they are all equally likely to be assessed. The assignment does NOT givepriority to the newest submission.

    c. The student's final grade is based on their overall "grading grade" and the submission withthe highest grade.

16.Set the SelfAssessment option.a. A workshop assignment can optionally include the student's own work in the set of pieces

each student is asked to assess. This will mean that if, say, the number of student pieces ofwork each student has to assess is set at 5, then each student will be asked to assess 6

pieces of work, one of them being their own work.

    b. If the number of student pieces of work is set to zero and the self assessment option isturned on then the assignment becomes a self-graded assignment

17.Set the Assessments must be agreed option. A workshop assignment can have either of thesecharacteristics:

    a. In the submission and assessment phase the students see the assessments made by otherstudents. There is no feedback from the students who submitted the work to the studentswho made the assessment. That is, there is only one way feedback between peers on any

    one piece of work.

    b. In the submission and assessment phase the students see the assessments made by otherstudents and they are allowed to comment on these assessments. They may agree or

disagree with the (peer) assessment. If they agree with the assessment then the assessmentstands and is used in the final calculations when determining the peer grade given to the

particular piece of work. If, however, they do not agree with an assessment the student whomade the assessment is given an opportunity to revise it. The revise/disagree loop can

continue until either agreement is reached or the deadline is reached. An assessment which

is still in "dispute" when the deadline is reached is not used in the final grades. This givestwo way feedbacks between peers on each piece of work.

If the second method of working is chosen there is the option of switching off the display ofgrades. That is, if the "hide grades" option is exercised, only the comments in the assessment are

shown to the student who work is being assessed. The grades are shown only after agreement has

been reached (on the comments alone). Note that this option only effective when agreement onassessments is required.

18.Set the Hide grades before agreements option.a. This option can be used in a workshop assignment where there must be agreement between

the students on each assessment. The default value is to show the student whose work is

being assessed both the comments and the grades in the peer assessments. This may lead tomore disputes than when the option is turned on and the assessments are shown without the

    grades.

    b. If the option is taken to hide grades in the peer assessments the grades are revealed onceagreement has been reached. This agreement will, of course, have been made only on the

comments. If these comments do not reasonably match the grades then the student whosework is being assessed may well appeal to the teacher.

21.Set the LeagueTable of Submitted Work option.a. This table lists the best submissions produced in the assignment. The number of entries can

be set to zero, a number between 1 and 20, 50 or 100. If set to zero then the LeagueTableis not displayed. If it is set to a number between 1 and 20, 50 or 100 then that number of

submissions are shown, e.g., setting the number to 10 shows the top ten submissions.

22.Set the Hide Names from Students option.a. A peer graded assignment can be graded anonymously. In this case the names (and any

photos) of the students doing the grading are not shown. Only the file names of the

submissions are used to identify the pieces of work being graded.

    b. When the peer graded assignment is not graded anonymously, the pieces of work areshown with the names (and any photos) of the students who submitted the work. This may

lead to bias in the grading.

    c. Note that if the teacher's grades are shown to the students these are never shownanonymously.

23.Set the Use Password and Password options.a. This field sets the "access" password for this exercise. The password can be up to 10

characters long. The password can be reset at any time during the workshop. Whether

students are asked for the password to enter the workshop is determined by this option. Touse, set the option to Yes and then enter the password for the exercise in the Password

    field.

24.Set the Maximum Size for uploaded files.Workshop Phases (by date):

25.Set the Start of submissions date. This phase determines when the students can beginsubmitting files.

26.Set the Start of assessments date.***This phase determines when the student peer assessments will begin. **This date and time must beafter the End of Submissions date or phase. The submissions phase must be closed before the

    assessments phase can begin***

***If the Start of Assessment date and time is set to a time prior to the End of Submissions date andtime, the students will only be able to assess sample assignments from the instructor***

27.Set the End of submissions date/phase. This date determines the last date that a student cansubmit a file for assessment.

28.Set the End of assessments date/phase. This date determines when the assessments will end.

29.Enter the Release Teacher Grades date.a. This date can be used to withhold the assessments (and grades) made by the teacher until

the given date. By default the date is set to the workshop's creation date and time. If thedate is not changed then the teacher's assessments are available to the students a short time

after they are done (the short time is typically half an hour Moodles maximum editing

time). Setting this option allows the teacher to withhold their own assessments until later in

the assignment. For example, if the teacher wishes to withhold their own assessments untilthe deadline date, then the release date is set to the same date as the deadline.

30.Set the Group mode.a. The group mode can be one ofthree levels:

No groups - there are no sub groups, everyone is part of one big community Separate groups - each group can only see their own group, others are invisible Visible groups - each group works in their own group, but can also see other groups

    b. The group mode can be defined at two levels:i. Course level

The group mode defined at the course level is the default mode for all activities

    defined within that course

ii. Activity levelEach activity that supports groups can also define its own grouping mode. If the

course is set to force group mode" then the setting for each activity is ignored.

31.Set the Visible option to determine whether the workshop should be visible to or hidden fromthe students. The workshop can be hidden until the instructor is ready for the assignment to be

    viewed.

    Adding Assessment Elements:

For ease of grading, a Workshop Assignment should have a reasonable number of "AssessmentElements". Each element should cover a particular aspect of the assignment. Typically an assignment will

have something between 5 to 15 elements for comments and grading, the actual number depends on the

size and complexity of the assignment. A peer assignment with only one element is allowed and has a

similar assessment strategy to the standard Moodle Assignment.

33.The image on page 1 shows that well have 5 elements for assessment.

34.Enter the elements as listed in the photo above and click Save changes.
