Overall Creating a VM is pretty easy it just involves a few easy steps.

Step One
The first step in this process is to download VMware Server. It can be
downloaded online at http://www.vmware.com/download/serve

Step Two
The next step is to install the software.
In windows just double click it and follow the wizard.
In Linux extract the file, go to the extracted folder in your terminal, ./ the Perl script, and answer the questions the script asks regarding your Linux distribution.

Step Three
Once you have installed VMware Server launch the VMware Server Console program and
then click the Create a new virtual machine button.

Step Four
Click next, then choose you VM configuration and click next again.

Step Five
Then choose your operating system and click next.

Step Six
The next step is to name it and tell the wizard where you want to put the file. Then click next three times

Step Seven
Then specify how many processors you have and click next.

Step Eight
Then specify how much RAM you want it to have and what kind of connection to use. Then click next at each window.

Step Nine
Click next three times. Then select your disk size for your VM and click next and then click finish.

Step Ten
You can change some virtual settings by clicking edit your virtual machine or you can just power on your virtual machine

Step Eleven
Once you are done changing your settings you can boot up your virtual machine by clicking the Power on your virtual machine button. And then just insert your CD and you can start installing your new OS.
