Practices for recognizing staff contributions –General Guidelines:

• Show gratitude and praise

• Ask the individual how they like to be rewarded/praised. What works for one person may not work for another.

• Ensure that you are adequately praising your staff.

• Ask if they have hidden talents they would like to bring to the job.

• Rewards should be timely. 73% of employees in Nelson study indicated timeliness is important.

• Be open about restrictions that you as the manager have about rewarding staff.

• Recognition tied to specific job performance measures are effective.

Practices for recognizing staff contributions –General Guidelines:

• All staff must be eligible for recognition

• Fair/equitable/consistent

• Criteria for award should be clear

• Should not become a given or a right.

Example - in one article, meals were regularly catered for meetings and a staff member wanted compensation because he didn’t eat the meal.

• Practices for Rewarding staff @ the NLC Library:

• Praise in many forms. Personally, announcements in staff meetings & minutes, celebrations of work and individual accomplishments. Think food / parties

• Flexibility with staff personal needs

• Established staff-initiated award of/by peers. Written guidelines and a certificate with a “baton” to pass on to next recipient

• Take advantage of any institutional awards/professional awards

• Handwritten notes and e-mails of praise with specifics for their files, letters of commendation for personnel files, specific comments about accomplishments on formal evaluations
