Help file – permissionsCreating a new site with unique permissions

Within your Hwb+ platform it is possible to create a new site.

Examples of new sites

1. A private site for SMT

2. A numeracy or literacy site

3. An after schools club site

4. A MAT site

5. A sports club site

When you create a new site the users who are permissioned to use the site above it, the parent site, will automatically inherit the same permissions in the newly created site. e.g. pupils who can contribute to the parent site will be able to contribute to the newly created site.

However, it is possible to allocate new users to this newly created site that do not inherit the permissions from the parent site.

To do this you will need to create a new site with unique permissions.

There are 3 main SharePoint groups with 3 main types of permissions. These are

Visitors - who have read only permissions

Members - who have contribute permissions

Owners - who have full control

These permissions are flexible and can be edited.

Select the LPplus4 class template and give the new site a name e.g. Writing Club, on the right hand side of the page. Also fill in the box asking for the name of the URL. This will be the same as the name of your site but will contain no capital letters or spaces. e.g. writingclub.

Select the More Options button.

Select Yes to use unique permissions in the permissions section on the left hand side of the page.

In the navigation section select Yes to inherit the top link bar from the parent site.

Click on Create.

A new site will now be created with unique permissions. This means that the permissions from the parent site have not been inherited.

Choosing to create a site with unique permissions will automatically create 3 new SharePoint groups. These are:

• Writing club visitors

• Writing club members

• Writing club owners

These groups are automatically allocated set privileges or permissions.

• Visitors - Read only permissions

• Members - Contribute permissions

• Owners - Full control

You will need to add users to the relevant SharePoint group. Pupils will need to be added to the contribute group and the teacher in charge of the new class will need to be added to the owners group. See the section on adding a user to a new site below.

Select OK on this page.

You will now need to apply the Hwb+ template to this new class site.
