Description

Foreign Travel » is generally defined as spending no more than six months outside the United

States for conventional business or pleasure purposes.

Foreign Residence » is generally defined as when a person spends more than six months a year

outside the United States. This may be a person who maintains dual residences; one who does not declare a full time, permanent US residence; or one who visits the United States but maintains a primary residence outside of the country.

» Overall economic conditions, endemic diseases, public health and sanitation standards, quality and capacity of medical facilities and different cultural attitudes toward personal health and safety are all factors that vary from one country to another. All are taken into account regarding the possible increased risk involved

with residing outside the United States.

Assessment of Foreign Travel» Conventional travel is defined as vacation and non-hazardous business

related activities including visiting family, vacations not involving hazardous avocational activities, cruises, visits for adoption purposes and short trips (defined as up to 1 month) for good will activities.

» Once a destination country for travel has been identified, the potential risk of that resident country needs to be assessed. Guidelines are based on current economic, political, and social stability of a particular country and may vary within a country by region or city.

» Countries are either considered acceptable (Green or Yellow) or unacceptable (Red) for foreign travel based on the overall risks presented by the destination country(ies). Preferred Best is available for applications for conventional travel to acceptable countries. Travel to unacceptable countries will generally not be accepted.

Underwriting Criteria

Assessment of Foreign Residence» Guidelines are based on the country of residence, not citizenship.» In determining the country of residency, the following types of information

should be obtained: Location of primary and any other residences. Where the individual’s immediate family resides. Location of business interests, banking and investments. Voting privileges. In what countries the individual pays taxes.

» Once a country of residence has been identified, the potential risk of that resident country needs to be identified. Countries have been categorized as Green (A), Yellow (B), or Red (C), based on the overall risks presented. Applications for residents of Green and Yellow countries will be accepted. Applications for residents of Red countries will not be accepted.

» Additionally, acceptability of coverage written in the US must be addressed. Some countries have regulations that prevent the purchase insurance by their residents from an unauthorized insurer.

Case Study – Foreign Travel

Foreign Travel» Jim, a 58-year-old non-smoker male is employed by a large, multi-national oil

company. He lives in Texas and as part of his job, he has significant international travel to review the company’s overseas operations. His upcoming itinerary involves 7-10 day trips to the following countries: Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Papua-New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.

Classification» Under our current travel guidelines, all listed countries are acceptable for

travel and Preferred Best would be available. There would be no limitation on the face amount applied for because the maximum time he would spend in a yellow countries (Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Papua-New Guinea) would be 40 days (less than the 3 month threshold where the $5 million limit is required).

Case Study – Foreign Residence

Foreign Residence» Ray, a 50-year-old non-smoker male, is part owner of a business in Hawaii

and has owned a home on the mainland for the past 2-3 years. Taxes are paid to South Africa, and the client spends most of his time in Durban, South Africa. An application was taken with the business in Hawaii as the owner, payor and beneficiary for key-man coverage.

Classification» Under our guidelines, the client would be considered a resident of South

Africa. And while applications on South African residents is restricted, in this instance the application can be accepted because the business is the owner, payor and beneficiary. The only limitation on the application is that the client’s residence in Durban allows for issuance at no better than Nonsmoker Plus rates.
