Welcome to the Media Center!
My name is Mrs. King and I am the Media Specialist at Woodland Elementary Charter School. This presentation will introduce you to our procedures in the media center.
Media Center PassWhen you enter the
media center, you must have a media center pass. You get this from your teacher. If you do not have a pass, you will be asked to go back to the classroom to get one.
The Circulation DeskYour first stop in the
media center will be the circulation desk. This is where you check out and return books. This is also where you pick up a shelf marker! Get a shelf marker before you begin browsing.
The Shelf Marker
Choose a shelf marker from the circulation desk – color does not matter. Take this with you as you browse the bookshelves. It should not be used to make noise. Also, do not hit yourself or anyone else with it.
Using the Shelf MarkerWhen you find a book
that you want to look at, place the shelf marker beside the book. Now remove the book. If you like the book, take it to the circulation desk for checkout. If you do not want the book, place it back on the shelf beside the shelf marker. This keeps the books in the correct order on the shelves!
The Look Up Stations
If you wish to look for a specific title or topic, use the patron catalog located on the computers in the
center of the media center.
SignageThe signs on the walls and on top of the shelves will help you locate the section that you are looking for.
Helpful hint!
Many of our students enjoy books about animals. We have placed stuffed animal figures above our nonfiction animal books. If you are looking for a book on animals, come to
this corner!
Another helpful hint!
Popular books are located in the triangular shelving next to the book return. You may browse these without a shelf marker and
check out one that you like.
Magazines
Current magazines are located on our magazine racks in red folders. These are not available for checkout. Raise the shelf to
find older issues of the magazine. These are available for checkout. Gently lower the shelf so that is closes quietly. Only
students in 3rd – 5th grades can check out a magazine.
Checking out booksStudents in grades 1
– 5 may check out 2 books at a time and keep them for 2 weeks. Once you have selected the items you would like to check out, return to the circulation desk. Put your shelf marker back in the container.
Due Date
When you are checking out a book, you will place a due date card in the back of your book. The card is stamped with the date that the book is due back in the media center.
Checking out a magazineWhen you check out
a magazine, you will be given a blue envelope to place the magazine in. The envelope will protect the magazine. Return the magazine in the envelope and drop the envelope in the book drop. You may keep the magazine for 2 week.
Returning books & magazines
When it is time to return your books and magazines, you will place the books in the book drop.
Classes
If you come into the media center with your teacher for a lesson, this is the area in which you will sit.
The Media CenterOur Media Center is open everyday from 7:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. We offer a vast selection of books to our students. If you can’t find what you are looking for or if you have any questions, please see Mrs. King, the Media Specialist, or Mrs. Hilton, the Media Clerk.
Happy Reading!
