Create an Image that implies story

Artists have been creating images that tell stories for as long as humans drew images on walls. These images, when successful give information and show drama/mood.

Examples:

Your next project is to create a digital image that does this. I do not expect you to hand draw these images, as I had. But I do expect you to create just as impactful images with Photoshop.

To begin with you learned how to create a collage in Photoshop, and to do so without it look to “cut and paste”.

In this project you will do the same, but with stock images. Be sure when you search for images on Google, that you include that word in your search, STOCK. The basis of this image is to create a character that interacts with a background. For example a person walking down a lonely city street.

What you will need…

1. Empty City Street (night)2. Person walking away3. Light Textures (2)4. Fog/Smoke5. (Optional) Props for that person to hold

Step1

Once you have found all these images create a new document in Photoshop that is

Open the textures you found in Photoshop. Once open, press Control + A, and then Control + C. This will copy your texture. Then paste, Control + V, into your new project that you created.

Step 3

Within each textures layer press Control + T, and stretch the textures to the edge of your project. Then in the layers panel change the opacity to 30 %. Do this for each layer.

Step 4

Now open the image of the city street. Once open, press Control + A, and Control + C. Then paste, Control + V, into you project. Afterwards press Control + T to fit the image to the work space. Finally change the opacity of the layer with the city street to 85%.

Step 5

Now open the image of a person walking away. Once open find a way to separate the person from the background. Copy only the image of the person, Control + C, then paste it to your project, Control + V. Adjust the size, Free Transform ( Control + T) of the image as needed. Also you may want to apply a Color Balance adjustment layer to the image, and change the opacity of the person in the image to 85%.

Step 6

At this point after careful consideration of the image decide if shadow should come into play with the image. Then create a layer underneath the layer of the person and draw a shadow for your person. Then use the blur tool and apply a blur to the shadow.

Step 7

Open your image of Fog/Smoke, then press Control + A—to select all. Then press Control + C—to copy. Finally paste the image into your project—Control + V. At this point I will adjust the image to fit on the screen—Control + T. Then finally adjust the opacity and if needed change the layer Blending Mode from Normal to Screen.

Step 8

You’re almost there. Finally after much consideration I decided that in order for the images fit together I put a filter on the city street layer to get it to fit with the cartoon image of the person.

Grading will be based on how successful you are in turning in a complete image.  These are

the criteria for which a complete image is based...

1. City Street and its use in the image

2. Value (Darks/Lights) to convey mood/drama

3. Use of a Character/Person

4. Implied Story

5. Execution (Does the image cohesively work all together)

For the completion of each of the criteria you will receive at most two points.  Total number

of point is 10.
