An astrological chart or, morespecifically, a natal chart, isa symbolic representation ofthe position of the planets, thesun, and the moon at themoment of a person's birth. Each planet occupies aparticular zodiac sign at agiven moment, and it is theinterpretation of thisplacement that providesastrologers with insight intoa person's personality andbehavior. Because anastrological chart is based onfacts--the actual positions in

the sky (relative to earth) ofheavenly bodies at a certaintime--it is more of anastronomical than anastrological endeavor. Thefollowing tips will help youcreate a chart for yourself orsomeone else.

Using a compass, draw three concentric circleson a piece of paper. The innermost circle shouldbe fairly small relative to the outer circles.

Divide the space between the outer two circles into12 equal sections. Each section will symbolizeone of the 12 signs of the zodiac (Cancer, Libra,etc.).

Label each section with itssign, represented by the sign'sglyph (symbol), proceeding inorder counterclockwise. It doesnot matter where you begin, since at this point you haveonly a circle and no top orbottom. If you label one sectionas Leo, the next section(again, movingcounterclockwise) should beVirgo, the next sign of thezodiac in the yearly order.

Divide each section (sign) into 30 equaldegrees. The whole circle has 360 degrees, soeach of the 12 equal sections will have 30degrees. Using small notches on the secondcircle, mark each degree. You can mark onlyevery other degree or so if you wish, but keep inmind that the angles between points on thecircle will be critical in interpreting the chart,so accuracy is important.Find the subject's ascendant sign by lookingup his or her birth date and time in anascendant table in an ephemeris. An ephemerisis a chart of the positions of heavenly bodies atgiven points in time-you can purchase one orfind one at the library, and several areavailable on the Internet. The ascendant is thesign of the zodiac that is rising over the easternhorizon at a given time (the time of birth, inthis case) at a given place (the subject's place ofbirth) on earth. Thus, in order to construct avery accurate chart, you will need to know the

longitude (and, for some methods, the latitude)of the subject's birthplace as well as the exactdate and time. Computer programs availablefree on the Internet can provide you with theascendant sign if you enter the necessaryinformation.

Mark the ascendant sign on your chart. Thecomputer program or ephemeris you use todetermine the ascendant sign will tell you alocation (in degrees) within that sign, forexample 12 degrees Virgo. To locate the correctpoint, find the sign (in this case Virgo) onyour chart, and, moving counterclockwise, count in the number of degrees (in this case12) from the sign's "beginning" edge. To putthis example another way: if we imagine thecircle to be a clock, and Virgo takes up the spacebetween 9 and 8, Virgo begins at 9 (not 8), andyou would count 12 degrees in from the 9toward the 8 to find 12 degrees Virgo. Theascendant sign is traditionally placed on theleft of the circle..

Determine the positions of the moon, sun, andplanets, and mark them on your chart. Consultthe ephemeris or computer program again tofind the locations within the zodiac of themajor celestial bodies at the time, date, andlocation of birth. These locations will be denotedby both the sign and degrees within the sign,as for the ascendant. Also, as with theascendant, you will need to adjust the locationsgiven in the ephemeris to take into account theactual time and place of the subject's birth. Ifyou use a computer program instead of anephemeris, this adjustment will be made foryou. Mark the positions in the space between theinner two circles of your chart. Denote thepositions with glyphs (symbols used torepresent each of the celestial bodies), and writethe location in degrees next to the glyphs.

Draw in the houses. The houses are imaginarydivisions (usually twelve), each one signifyingan aspect of the subject's life (money, children, family, personality, etc.). These are located inthe large space in the chart between the innercircle and the second circle. The arrangement ofthe houses is controversial and there are severalmethods to choose from. One of these (perhapsthe easiest) is the equal-house method, in whicheach house is 30 degrees wide. The "beginning"edge of the first house is drawn at theascendant. If the ascendant is at 12 degreesLeo, the first house runs from there to 12degrees Virgo, and the second house runs from12 degrees Virgo to 12 degrees Libra, and so on.The houses are numbered 1-12counterclockwise.

Calculate the aspects. An aspect is the angleformed between a pair of celestial bodies, withthe earth as the center (or vertex) of the angle. You can estimate the aspects by simply lookingat the chart. For example, if we imagine thechart to be a clock, if the sun is located in the12 o'clock position and Venus is located at 3o'clock, we can see that the angle between thetwo is 90 degrees. For more accuracy, you cancalculate the aspects using the degree readingsyou recorded on the chart, keeping in mind thatthe entire circle has 360 degrees, and each signhas 30 degrees. You can draw in the aspects inthe center circle if you wish.

Consult a book on the interpretation of the

planets in each sign and house and make

observations on the subject's personality and

    behavior.

If this all seems a little complicated, you canget a personalized chart in seconds by enteringthe necessary information in any number offree chart programs on the Internet. If youdoubt the accuracy, try a couple for a secondopinion. While these are certainly quicker thandoing it yourself, you'll miss out on the chanceto gain greater insight into astrology. In order to estimate a subject's ascendant signwithout the aid of an ascendant chart, find outthe time of sunrise for the subject's date andlocation of birth (see external links for a tool toassist you). If the person was born at sunrise, his or her ascendant sign would be the same ashis or her sun sign (the sign which most peopleconsider to be their "sign"). For every two hoursafter sunrise, the ascendant proceeds forwardone sign (i.e. from Leo to Virgo). Thus, ifsunrise on the subject's date of birth at thesubject's birthplace was at 6:15 A.M., but thesubject (a Leo) was born at 11:15 A.M., youwould proceed two signs from Leo-because thesubject was born more than 4 hours, but less

than 6 hours after sunrise-and you would findthat Libra is the ascendant.

When consulting an ephemeris, exercise care tocorrectly adjust the local time of the subject'sbirth to the time listed in the ephemeris.Usually an ephemeris will give you thepositions of celestial bodies at midnight(00:00) Greenwich Mean Time, so you will notonly need to interpolate the positions for theactual time of birth, you will also need toadjust for time zone differences and daylightsavings time, if applicable. You can construct a natal chart without theexact time or location of birth, but it will be lessaccurate.

Use a pencil while constructing the chart, asyou are likely to make a mistake or two atfirst. You can then trace over the pencil lineslater.

The time of birth is generally regarded as themoment at which the baby first breathes. Birthtimes are often rounded to the nearest half-houror quarter-hour on birth certificates and thusmay not accurately show the actual time ofbirth.

If the subject's date of birth is on the cusp, twoto four days on either side of the beginning of azodiac sign, his or her personality traits mayresemble the sign immediately preceding his orher sun sign.
