will be outside with their class in zoned areas of the playground. They will have outdoor equipment they can play with.
Lunches will be eaten outside the classrooms in the wings. These will be cold packed lunches to start off with.
Children will be provided with pencils, pencil cases, rubbers, etc. These will be kept in school in their tray. They do not need a pencil case.
Children will be washing hands regularly throughout the day
We do not expect the children to be able to social distance but smaller groups and class sizes will help with keeping children safe
If your child has a cough or high temperature please keep them at home and check the NHS website for current guidance.
Please do not send children in with school bags, we are trying to keep very little passing between school and home
As soon as we are able to invite parents in to visit the class and school we will let you know.

home. All we need is your full name and an email address to set up your account if
you don’t already have one. More information on this to come!
We love when you send in pictures of your child’s
learning or comment on our

ParentPay is a secure website used across Edinburgh Schools that lets you pay costs such as

It is our only method of receiving money as we are a cashless school. Although P1-3s get free school
meals you will still need to choose their meal choice weekly from the 3 daily options.
If your child attends our nursery you should have a Parent Pay account already for paying snack money.
If not, you will receive information about how to set up an account for this when you child starts

Health and Safety Considering the current situation we ask that children do not
bring anything other than a jacket and a water bottle to school.
Label all belongingsTo ensure you get everything home again, label it!
Things get mixed up/ lost easily when there is no name on it.For example, jumpers, cardigans etc will all be red/ have the
school badge and most likely be aged 4-6 years.
Shoes Buy comfortable/ all weather shoes as your child will wear them all day. Velcro straps are recommended until they learn to tie laces. You can send children in with a change of shoes and in
wellies on bad weather days as the ground is muddy.
Jackets
Send your child with a jacket every day – the weather is unpredictable, but we try to get the children outside to play
at break/ lunch as much as possible!

Expressive Arts
Play based learning allows us to provide a flexible and child - focused curriculum.
We provide appropriate space for children to play and learn and provide open ended resources for children to explore
and develop.
Open ended resources provide exciting
experiences which encourage children to share their own ideas, explore, investigate,
create and problem solve.
Play based learning in
action!
We follow the City of Edinburgh Early Literacy programme.
We work our way through;
• Rhyme• Syllables • Compound words• Single sounds (a, t, p)• Diagraph sounds (sh, ch, ai, ee)
Our play runs alongside the literacy programme to ensure the children are
exposed further to their new sounds in a meaningful and real life way.
Children also participate in various activities and have daily interactions through play to
develop vital listening and talking skills.
Practising the sounds at home, little and often, will have a huge impact on your child’s learning
and development.
SoundsWe learn 1 or 2 new sounds each week when we
start our literacy programme.
We introduce letters by their sound e.g. a for
apple. Each sound also has a song and an action to help
children remember it.
The children will be learning to make and read words e.g. c a t
makes cat
We watch videos to support children’s
understanding of the sounds. Alphablocks and Geraldine the
Giraffe are always a favourite!
Reading books will not be sent home at the moment. We will provide other literacy based home learning activities using Learning Journals and Twitter.
We will introduce the reading scheme when your child is ready
English as an Additional Language
staff work in the school every week
(EAL)If your child can recognise shop signs and/ or
pictures related to things they know and are able to tell you what it is then your child is reading!
We also introduce children to common
words which are tricky words that cannot be sounded out, you just
have to know them e.g. the, he, was, put
Cursive handwritinga b c d e f g h

x y zAt Craigour Park we teach cursive
handwriting.
All letters start on the line, we
teach the children to say ‘up the run way’ to remember the lead in for each
letter.
With cursive writing, children learn to spell correctly since hand
movements create some muscle memory that retains the spelling
patterns.
Children are also exposed to a variety
of fonts when reading.
We use the City of Edinburgh SEAL (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) Maths Programme
Nursery to P4.
SEAL helps children to develop a deep understanding of number
and number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division).
We also cover maths topics such as time, money, measurement,
shape, pattern, fractions, problem solving and data analysis.
Children also develop their numeracy skills through real life experiences, routines and PLAY.
Health and Wellbeing• We are following the Building Resilience programme and will look at –
Expect The Unexpected, Respect Yourself, Challenge Your Mindset, Take a Moment”. We will continue to learn new emotional vocabulary and how our emotions affect our relationships.
• We are also using the colour monster to highlight our emotions and try to work out triggers and ways to cope with overwhelming emotions
Religious and Moral Education• In RME we will learning about sharing and cooperating with others.• We will also explore and discuss a variety of religious festivals
throughout the year.
Science and Social Subjects• ‘All about me’ - the children and their families• Autumn and the change in seasons• Christmas around the world• Space• Fairyland• Senses• Mini beasts• Child led topic where the children decide what they want to learn about.
Primary 1 go outdoors at least two afternoons a week in all weathers. You will be notified of your child’s outdoor learning day at the start of term.
You can help by ensuring your child comes appropriately dressed in the following:
• Sensible footwear/trainers• Warm/ waterproof coat• Practical clothing (joggers/leggings)• Spare clothing in case they are needed• Hat and gloves during colder weather• Sun cream in warmer weather – please apply to your
child before they come to school. Staff are not allowed to apply this.
Please note - children may get dirty so old clothing is advised.
The outdoor environment plays an important role in the curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to experiment and explore, ask question, make observations,
solve problems, take risks, make friendships, build confidence and evaluative learning.
Nature arts and crafts
P1 also have the opportunity to take part in Playpod sessions where children are encouraged to use a variety of loose parts and use their imagination to make
something of their choosing. This could be anything from a train to a shelter or even some cooking in the kitchen.
Children are encouraged to experiment and explore
‘risky’ play such as climbing trees as this helps increase
confidence and self-esteem. Supporting risky
play develops the ability to identify hazards and the
ability to cope with future challenges.
Give a note to your child to give to the teacher.
Arrange to speak to speak
to the class teacher on the
phone after school has finished.
Phone the office and make an
appointment.
We have a thriving Parent Council and are always looking for new
members. If interested please see the Parent
