Volume 18-1

Welcome to the 2018-2019 PIAA season. After a rainy and difficult 2018, we are ready for another exciting season of

basketball. There is nothing better than a gym full of screaming fans, hustling athletes, and sweat on your brow as you

keep the game fair. At every level and every night, enjoy the challenge you are given and do your best.

Professionalism

Be a professional at all times.

Keep your calendar up to date.

Confirm with your partners. Dress the part. Show up early.

Address players, coaches, and table personnel with respect.

You will be amazed how others treat you when you look and act the part.

PIAA and NCAA

If you work both levels, learn the differences in the rules and apply them in the correct venue.

Have a private pregame and look over the differences before you take the court.

When you work a PIAA assignment, only talk about what you will do that night.

Do not pollute your mind by looking at both sets of rules.

ENERGY

Show energy on every possession, and work every possession like it's still a two point game.

What does energy look like?

Jog when you switch positions during a foul call,

jog as the C when moving in transition

Jog to and from time-out spots

use your voice and solid mechanics all of your calls

hustle up players when lining up for free throws

quickly rotate as the lead when needed

move above or below the shooter so that you can look for contact on the elbow or wrist

C and T step down of all shots

stand with a staggered stance as T or C (avoid standing flat footed)

“Move to Improve” – look to get the best angle every time

Injuries / Blood Rule 3-3-6, 3-3-7

After stopping play, if a coach or trainer enters the court to respond to his/her injured player, the player must leave the game and

may not re-enter until time runs off of the clock. The coach may also use a time-out to keep the player in the game. The injured

player must be ready for play at the end of the time-out.

What would you do if the opponent’s unbeckoned trainer comes onto the court? If you address the situation before first aid is

given, allow the player to continue playing if able to do so.

So when should we stop play?

SITUATION WHEN RESTART

Serious injury (any time) Stop the game immediately Point of interruption – possession or alternating possession arrow

Injured player's team has control Stop the game immediately Throw-in by teammate POI

Opponent has control

*Injured player in lane in harm's way Stop the game immediately Opponent throw-in POI

*Making no effort to score Stop the game immediately Opponent throw-in POI

*Fast break or making an effort to score Allow opponent to take one shot, and blow whistle while ball is in the air.

If the shot goes in, count the basket and POI is endline throw-in to injured team. If shot does not go in, use Alternating possession arrow.

There will be no rebound.

Rolled shorts

Will this issue ever go away?

Per PIAA Interpretation … rolled shorts are permissible provided they do not reveal excess logos or dangling strings.

Rolled shorts that reveal multiple logos or a dangling string should be treated in a similar fashion as an untucked shirt. A

player wearing shorts with multiple logos shall be directed to leave the game as in 3-3-4. There is no penalty for rolled

shorts provided they have a total of one (1) manufacturers logo on the garment and are worn above the hips.

Suggestions: 1. Keep It Simple – ignore the tags

2. When in doubt, the kid plays.

LEGAL LEGAL ILLEGAL ILLEGAL

Page 3: Craig’s Call - CPBOAs_Call_121118.pdf · ** If concussion headband, need PIAA approval letter; BUT if no PIAA letter, let student play if item is not dangerous (most aren’t dangerous)

Back Court Rule Change Not much changed. Last touch--first touch still applies.

PLAY: B1 deflects the ball toward A1 who catches the ball in his back court before the ball touches the court.

LEGAL Unlike a similar out of bounds play, A1 does cause a violation when catching the deflection.

Player Control and Team Control Fouls – Switches a.k.a. Easier Than you Think

Lead makes the call,

goes long /table side.

Others call the foul,

all they do is SLIDE.
