The Portland ProjectThe Portland Project began with a road trip: with disconnecting from the daily grind and restoring our attention to the world around us. With letting our minds wander as well as our feet, in full confidence that new patterns would be revealed, unearthed, created.

Resulting in a coordinating collection of modular carpet and LVT, The Portland Project is not a literal interpretation of what we saw in our travel. Instead, it evokes our experiences of wandering, wonder and discovery. The collection draws on the adventurous human spirit that brings us closer to our environment.

Experiential Design

For The Portland Project, we traveled across Oregon, exploring not only the land but our own perceptions of it. Our designs emerged from that feeling of never knowing what beautiful viewpoint might lie just around the bend.

Innovation through CollaborationWe work closely with leading artists, architects and designers to drive our innovations in flooring design, creating products that deliver new insights and fresh perspectives to inspire your own design innovations.

Moiré CollectionWe designed the Moiré Collection in collaboration with renowned artist Gabriel Dawe, drawing inspiration from Dawe’s large-scale art installations. In his work, Dawe uses miles of thread in delicate color gradations to create shapes as ethereal as rays of light.

For the collection, Dawe and our design team explored the moiré effect, which Dawe describes as inherent to the experience of his installations. A study of moiré in multiple scales, the Moiré Collection combines dynamic patterning and subtly gradated colors to bring a new sense of light and space to broadloom and modular carpet.

Vice President of Design Roby Isaac and the Mannington Commercial Design Studio collaborated closely with Gabriel Dawe to develop Moiré, translating Dawe’s artistic vision into an inspiring flooring collection.

Case Study:

Johns Hopkins Health SystemTo specify flooring at JHHS, their Lead Interior Designer took an evidence based approach, testing 15 flooring products to see which ones lived up to their claims. Our Paradigm Collection rose to the top.

Challenge “We’re very heavy duty here,” says Teri Bennett, the JHHS Lead

Interior Designer. “In some of the main areas of the Hospital, there can be 20,000 people walking through in a day.” To determine which flooring products could truly meet the needs of JHHS, Bennett developed and conducted the Johns Hopkins Sustainable Flooring Test. She had 15 flooring products installed in one of the busiest corridors of the Hospital. Over the course of 3 months, the flooring was subjected to heavy daily traffic and cleaning. Bennett analyzed the floors’ performance, safety and ease of maintenance.

Solution Throughout the test, “Paradigm by Mannington Commercial did

beautifully,” says Bennett. “It did so well that it is pretty much our first choice for any sheet vinyl project.” Bennett has since used Paradigm across JHHS, including the Skip Viragh Outpatient Building, the Johns Hopkins Breast Center and many office suites. Large Telecom CompanyWhen a leading telecommunications firm sought to renovate one of their workplaces to fit a new generation of professionals, our carpet and LVT delivered the style and performance they wanted, on a tight timeline.

Challenge To help meet the needs of a younger generation of employees, a

leading telecommunications company sought to renovate one of their workplaces into a sophisticated environment that fostered innovation. They wanted a space with a hip look and feel, and they also needed the renovation done quickly to reduce downtime. The chosen flooring products also had to suit the raised access flooring system being used in the space, which required an LVT that was thicker than standard products.

Solution Mannington Commercial offered coordinating modular carpet

and LVT styles that fit the younger, dynamic culture of the work-place, and all styles were available on a tight timeline. Cheng LibraryTo support a passion for learning, William Paterson University’s Dean of the Library wanted to create spaces as vibrant, creative and hard-working as the students. Our variety of flooring products and personalized solutions made his goals reality.

Challenge Dr. Edward Owusu-Ansah, Dean of the Library at WPU, sought to

All of our hard surface flooring is FloorScore® certified to meet the indoor air quality requirements of LEED, the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, the Green Guide for Health Care and other healthy building programs.

We also offer vinyl-alternative products, including Cirro, a collection of non-vinyl resilient plank and tile, and a range of rubber flooring styles, including sheet and tile. Our modular carpet and resilient sheet products also feature non-ortho phthalate constructions.

Transparency of Ingredients and ImpactWe offer EPDs and HPDs on a wide range of our products to help you assess environmental and health impacts. EPDs are available for our modular carpet and Integra HP® broadloom, our resilient sheet and rubber tile, and many of our LVT products. HPDs are available for our modular carpet, Integra HP® and UltraBac® RE broadloom products. Our rEvolve® modular carpet backing also features a Declare label.

Environmentally Responsible Operations Everything we touch has a ripple effect, reaching out past the immediate impact of our actions. By running our facilities responsibly, we are able to make a greater contribution to the wellbeing of our local communities and far beyond them.

Reducing Our FootprintWe power our New Jersey facilities with the help of more than 3.3 acres of solar voltaic arrays, one of the largest in the flooring industry. The solar arrays generate nearly 1,000,000 kWh a year of emission free, renewable electricity.

We have reduced water consumption by 35% at our Georgia facilities. Much of this progress is due to improved dyeing methodologies. Other actions included converting areas of mowed lawn to natural landscaping and wildlife habitats.

ISO 14001 OperationsWe have been adhering to conservation-minded operations by running ISO 14001 registered plants since 2004, giving us a way to continually improve our environmental impact. We began with our inlaid sheet operations and have extended to our cushion sheet, carpet and LVT operations.

With new goals set annually, we have already used ISO 14001 to help reduce our energy use and waste, increase recycling streams and develop transpar-ency declarations for our carpet products.

Stewards of the EnvironmentWith external groups like the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, New Jersey Audubon Society and local schools, we have planted thousands of native shrubs and trees alongside the wetlands that neighbor our New Jersey facilities.

By planting these riparian buffers, we not only help control erosion–we established areas of shrub/scrub habitat that provide shelter for a variety of valuable bird species and wildlife.

Supporting WildlifeIn the mid-1980s, we began attracting migrating birds called Purple Martins to our New Jersey manufacturing facilities as a natural alternative to the use of pesticides. The solution worked, and our employees continue to be engaged in tracking the birds and managing their housing.
