    Wine Racks: More Than Storage

From eclectic and funky to timeless and vintage, they come in all shapes, sizes and designs to fit theneeds of wine connoisseurs. They can hold one bot-tle, or several thousand.

Some are uniquely sculpted and inspired byabstract architecture, while others feature more con-temporary and modern touches.

STORAGE STRATEGY There is a definite strategy in how most wine racks

hold your bottles. They are generally designed for abottle to be stored on its side with a slight downwardslant. This keeps the wine in contact with the cork,

which keeps the cork from drying out and disallowsoxygen to pass through and spoil the wine.

For this reason, you should avoid racks that aremade to hold your wine in an upright position.

MATERIALS Wine racks come in nearly every material imagin-

able. Some are crafted from reclaimed wood, whileothers are comprised of steel. When choosing a rack for your home, ensure its

strength under pressure, especially if you need it tohold a large number of bottles. Ask your retailermore about the company that produces its wine racks

and, if its a major investment for you, do some fol-low-up with that business about how it weight-testsits racks.

This will give you total confidence in your newwine racks ability to perform under pressure.

FUNCTION AND FASHIONOn the floor or on the counter? Screwed into the

wall or hanging from the ceiling? There are countless ways to display your new

wine rack, limited only by the manufacturers speci-fications and your creativity.

Wine racks are about more than storage. Capableof being your living room centerpiece or your kitch-en accessory, they are the perfect complement tomany design schemes.

Their wide range of available colors and textureswill help you find the perfect rack to accentuate yourfurniture, countertops or paint palette.

Sure, wine racks do a great job of displaying yourfavorite bottles, but they can also serve as a designelement within nearly any room of your home.

    Accessories for Wine Lovers

This fierce competition has led toquality products and cheaply madeones, as well, so do your research

before paying big bucks for the nextbig thing. Some wine traditionalists will tell

you that all you need to enjoy thewine-drinking experience are a bottleand glass, but some of the followingaccessories have definitely carved out aniche in the wine market.

WINE COLLARThe perfect accessory for the clean

and tidy drinker, a wine collar fitsaround the neck of the bottle andabsorbs any drips that may run downafter pouring. The collar helps in pre-venting stains on tablecloths, counter-

    tops and picnic tables.

TASTEVINThese small and shallow saucers areindustry mainstays used by winemak-ers and sommeliers when judging wine. They are generally designed with ashiny, textured inner surface to catchlight and allow for testers to seethrough the wine.

WINE JOURNALIts hard keeping up with the wines

you have tried on various trips andvacations. Why not write them down?A wine journal will help you maintainand update lists of your favorite wines,as well as information on their pro-

ducer, region, price and your personalrankings.

WINE THIEFHome winemakers cant live with-out a wine thief, which is manufacturedwith glass or food-grade plastic andused in wine production. Its purpose isto remove a small amount of wine fromfermentation devices for testing.

WINE STOPPERSThese invaluable tools are more of a

necessity than an accessory. Stoppersclose leftover wine bottles beforerefrigeration, helping to keep winefrom going stale. They come in manyshapes and colors, but are mainly pro-duced from cork, rubber or plastic

    materials.

WINE COOLERNo, not the low-alcohol, artificiallyflavored variety. Wine coolers areessential in keeping your favorite redsand whites perfectly chilled on picnics, camping trips and outdoor barbecues.

WINE CLIPDesigned to remove potential impu-

rities, the wine clip fits over a winebottle and acts as a magnetic filter.Producers of these accessories claimthat clips work to stimulate andenhance the taste of wine.

There are many products on the market made to enhance the wine-drinkingexperience. And with the wine industry booming and serving a growing targetaudience, makers of wine accessories are always looking to set themselves apart.

Wine Aerators: Its in the Air

This results in an enhanced aromaand expanded profile, all in a matter ofminutes.

A handy tool for wine-lovers look-ing for big flavor in a short period oftime, aerators are easy to use, clean andstore. Their popularity took off in thelate 2000s, as many regions across thecountry also saw their wine productionand winery growth explode.

More time spent at wineries andbreweries helps people pick up indus-try tricks, trades and tools, and sparkstheir own interest in trying them athome.

THE BASICSWine aerators are small devices that

come in a variety of shapes, sizes anddesigns. They work by increasingwines exposure to oxygen and causingaeration to impact the liquids makeup.

These handy tools offer an alterna-tive to swirling and decanting, whichsome people find too time-consumingto reach optimum effects.

HOW TO USE ONEAerators are not only convenient to

store, they are also easy to use. Simplyhold your aerator above your glasswhile you pour wine through the topof it.

As the wine passes through, it mixes

with air as bubbles are sent to the glass.

The tool works to improve the taste

and finish of your wine, more so thanswirling or decanting. It is handy and time-efficient, the

perfect accessory for a quick, casualmeal.

DIFFERENT STYLESThere are a number of styles of wine

aerators on the market. Injection-styleacrylic models are most common, designed with a wide tube that gradu-ally narrows.

In-bottle and decanter-top aeratorsare also available and growing in popu-larity because of their effective designs.

Some single-glass aerators comeequipped with a movable spout thatadjusts to different sized and shapedwine glasses.

Once you find an aerator that worksbest for your wine-serving needs, youwill be well on your way to improving

the overall taste of your favorite variet-ies.

Why swirl when you can aerate?Wine aerators expand thesurface area of wine, allowing

the air and wine to mix.

    Wine and Anti-Aging

This study supports the decade-old one that discovered resveratrol found inred wine has strong anti-aging effects.

Resveratrol has been linked to protection against obesity, diabetes and badcholesterol, and has been found to improve vascular function by preventingblood clotting and plaque formation in arteries.

HOW IT WORKSThe recent study conducted by Harvard Medical School shows that resve-

ratrol stimulates production of a serum that blocks diseases by speeding up thecells energy production centers known as mitochondria.

Researchers identify resveratrol as a naturally occurring antioxidant that isfound in grapes and cocoa.

HEART HEALTHProtecting your heart is obviously a main objective as you age. Moderate

consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative againstcoronary heart disease, according to some scientists.

Red wine reduces production of harmful cholesterol while boostinghigh-density cholesterol.

DISEASE CONTROLThrough various studies, resveratrol has been shown to protectagainst a slew of diseases, including Alzheimers disease and dementia.

Its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties have also beenshown to prevent harmful cellular damage that is often the root ofmany debilitating diseases.

MODERATION IS KEY No, adding more wine to your diet doesnt necessarily mean

fewer wrinkles. The opposite is true, according to some experts.Excessive amounts of wine can make you look older and feel moresluggish.

Instead, enjoy one glass of red wine per day. According tosome researchers and physicians, it is the single most importantaction you can take to slow down aging.

Red wine is as delicious as it is powerfulin its impact on aging. A recent studyfound that a compound in the skin ofgrapes could be an antidote to aging byslowing down the process and evenstaving off disease.

    Craft Means Local

Craft beer makers are, by definition, local and small. Theyproduce relatively small batches of beer and are focused onexceeding customer expectations with every ounce.

Thats because word of mouth is often the most important

factor deciding the success or failure of a small, family-ownedoperation.And with most small breweries falling under this category,

you can expect to find knowledgeable, responsive profession-als to help you along your craft beer journey.

ECONOMIC IMPACTMore money spent on local products means more money

pumped into the local economy.Local brewery owners often reinvest revenue into their

schools and community projects. Surveys have found that

small business owners are more likely than their chain or fran-chise counterparts to support local efforts, with both financesand time.

Buy your craft beer locally for a chance to win the ultimateprize economic prosperity.

CAMARADERIETake a look inside your local brewpub or microbrewery.

Within those walls are your neighbors, community partnersand acquaintances trying to turn their entrepreneurial dreamsinto sustainable incomes for their families.

Much like any small business owner, they pour long hoursand hard work into making a product for you to enjoy.

By supporting their efforts, you are helping them advancetheir goals, building quality local relationships and providingan economic boost to your area.

MAKE A STATEMENTStaying local will help you in your quest to support your

friends, family and neighbors. And making a statement never tasted so good.

Local brewers stay on top of current consumer trends andflavor combinations to make sure they are on the cutting edgeof an ever-changing industry. So the benefits are two-fold. Youget to enjoy innovative local beer and they grow their busi-ness.

Besides their deliciousness, craft beers are drawing new customersevery day because of the industrys reliance on local business owners.
