The Samsung GALAXY S4 is slimmer yet stronger compared to the GALAXY S III, with less to hold yet more to see. IPHONE USERS WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE SLIMNESS OF THE IPHONE 5 IF IT WASN’T FOR THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND APPLE’S LIGHTNING CONNECTOR.

The invention of the Lightning connector wasn’t about delivering a better sync or charge experience for users, but was to save space inside the case to allow for a thinner, more lightweight design and larger battery. The new lightning adaptor was designed with much less of a ridge where cable meets connector due to issues with a common breakage point on 30-pin cables. It was simply just impossible to make the iPhone slimmer and ligher while using the existing 30-pin connector.

The symmetrical design of the new 8 pin digital plug allows users to flip the connector and plug the lightning cable into any Lightning device in either orientation. The plug itself incorporates a processor which detects the plug’s orientation and routes the electrical signals to the correct pins.

All Cellnet and Mercury AV lightning cables are certified using the Apple MFI program. This means this has been authorised through strict Apple product guidelines. The first beta version of iOS 7 includes a system for warning users when they are using unauthorized cables or accessories with their devices. The software does not, however, prevent the cables or accessories from functioning but this could be a sign of things to come.

BELKIN INTRODUCES THE WEMO SWITCH AND WEMO MOTION KIT - GIVING WIRELESS CONTROL OF HOME APPLIANCES.

The sensor plugs into an outlet and detects motion up to 10 feet away. It then sends a wireless signal to the WeMo Switch to turn the connected device either on or off. The free WeMo app downloaded to any Apple device (iOS 5 or higher) programs a light to turn on when a user walks into the house or a fan to turn off when left.

WeMo works with a home’s existing electrical system and requires only a Wi-Fi® network and free smartphone app to set up and control. Simply plug the WeMo Home Control Switch into any electrical outlet and then plug in any device, such as a lamp, into the WeMo Home Control Switch. Through the free smartphone app, the item then can be turned on or off remotely or scheduled to turn on and off at set times.

The second product in the line is the WeMo Motion Sensor, which works with the WeMo Home Control Switch to make a device react to motion. Used together, WeMo can create a home environment that can turn a light on when someone walks in a room, or off when no one is present.

The WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion Kit makes it easy to set schedules for home appliances and electronics and turn devices on and off remotely.

The sensor detects movement up to 10 feet away and wirelessly signals the WeMo Switch to turn the connected device on or off, depending on preferences. The sensor’s 6-foot cord lets the user place it in the optimal position.

Traditional home automation often involves expensive custom installation,

SPECULATION IS RIFE SURROUNDING THE RELEASE OF SAMSUNG, APPLE AND NOKIA’S ‘NEXT BIG THING’ IN HANDHELD DEVICES. WILL THEY JUST STICK TO THE TRIED AND TESTED OR BLOW OUR SOCKS OFF WITH ALMOST STAR TREK LIKE TECHNOLOGY?

iPhone 5s and 5c

Apple will reportedly release two new iPhone models - the sixth-generation iPhone called the iPhone 5s, and a completely new ‘low-cost’ iPhone model aimed at emerging markets called iPhone 5c. Given the timetable announced for Apple’s redesigned mobile operating system iOS 7, the iPhone launches should coincide with the release date schedule of iOS 7.

The iPhone 5s is rumoured to feature Retina or IGZO screen display, A7 quad core chip processor, iOS 7, 128GB internal storage, 13MP camera, and longer battery life.

The cheaper iPhone 5c (‘c’ for colour) is rumoured to sport a plastic casing, 4-inch screen display, dual core processor and 8MP camera and is speculated to be available in five colours.

Both versions are rumoured to include a fingerprint sensor technology for added security.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Although exact specs are still unknown the general consensus seems to suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will sport an even bigger screen than Galaxy Note 2.

It is suggested the display will be a whopping 6.3-inches or pack a slightly more modest 5.9-inch AMOLED screen. It may be the first phone to sport a flexible OLED display.

As this device will fall into Samsung’s ‘Note’ family, the S-Pen will stay. The S Orb camera feature is apparently destined to debut on the Galaxy Note 3, after not making it onto the Galaxy S4.

Note 3 could potentially become the most powerful handset in the world with a octa-core processor, eight-core GPU, 3GB of RAM, 5.99-inch Full HD display and a 13MP rear camera that will have optical image stabilisation technology, which will apparently give traditional cameras a run for their money.

Rumoured to feature a humongous 41MP camera - taking the PureView technology from its Symbian Nokia 808 PureView and putting in a new Windows Phone shell. The Nokia EOS/Lumia 1020 is also rumoured to pack a 4.5-inch, 720p display, a quad-core processor and 32GB of storage.
