Greetings:
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Parks Foundation (CPF), we are pleased to provide you with our 2016-2017 Annual Report!
Since its inception over three decades ago, the core mission of the CPF has never wavered:
• Enhance Parks across the State of Colorado through grants that are awarded annually.
• Advocate for the ongoing improvement and protection of Parks throughout the State of Colorado.
• Promote the enjoyment and usage of Parks throughout the State of Colorado, allowing for enjoyable and benefi cial outdoor experiences for the citizens of Colorado and its visitors.
Th e CPF was founded in 1985 by former State Senator Joe Shoemaker, along with two of his longtime friends and political allies, Flo (Doc) Gilbert and Joe Schieff elin. Th e purpose behind this collective request was to create a 501c3 non-profi t organization focused on providing Parks across Colorado with modest grants for needed projects or programs within their respective areas that otherwise would not be possible.
Th e initial grant year was 1986 during which the fi rst two, albeit modest, grants totaling $8,500 were awarded to Colorado State Forest State Park and an Art in the Parks initiative.
From this humble beginning, the CPF has, over the last three decades, provided over 150 grants to numerous State Parks, Colorado Recreational Areas and, more recently, local and regional park projects and initiatives. Just over the last two years, the CPF provided 16 grants in 2016 and 25 grants in 2017!
Th ese latest investments in our State’s park and open space amenities brings the total grant disbursement amount from the CPF to over $950,000.
Th e CPF is also very proud of its eff ort in 2007 to initiate the Colorado State Parks License program. Th e State Parks Plates became available on January 1, 2011 and, as of the publication of this Annual Report, over 3,000 State Parks Plates can be seen on vehicles traveling across the highways and byways of our beautiful State and beyond. 100% of every dollar donated to the CPF for Plate purchases is deposited into a separate endowment fund within the CPF. Each year, a minimum of 5% of the endowment’s value is donated to a requested State Park grant applicant. Th is past year, a grant of $4,000 was presented to Barr Lake State Park!
Th e Colorado Parks Foundation was created to provide engagement, advocacy, and fi nancial support for Parks across the State of Colorado. Th ese eff orts allow the ever-increasing benefi t these amazing natural resources off er to the environmental sustainability of Colorado to continue to thrive. CPF is proud to launch the 33rd year of its mission with the promise and commitment to increase its engagement, advocacy and fi nancial assistance to Parks across the State of Colorado!
I hope you enjoy the Colorado Parks Foundation’s 2016-2017 Annual Report. I welcome your phone call or email at any time!

Th e Colorado State Park License Plate was conceived in 2007 and launched in 2011. Since then, the Colorado Parks Foundation (CPF) has proudly sold over 3,000 of these beautiful license plates from 225 cities within the State of Colorado, celebrating our state parks.
Every Parks Plate purchased provides a one-time donation of $44 to the CPF, 100% of which is placed into a separate, dedicated endowment fund. No administrative fees are assessed against the fund, and every year as the fund grows, a minimum of 5% of the value of the endowment is used to provide grants to State Parks across Colorado.
Th e CPF has provided grants to: Barr Lake State Park, Chatfi eld State Park, Steamboat Lake State Park and multi-park event grants such as the First Day Hikes Grant and the Eclipse Viewing Grant. Th e combined grants awarded from this License Plate fund exceed $17,000!
