If Shane Nolin can keep the same pace he has been running at all season, then the first barrel selection and more importantly, the No. 1 barrel, will be his for the final dash.

Since the first race in North Battl-eford, Nolin has had a stranglehold on the points standings, only giving it up once to Brian Laboucane, however, even that was only to share the top spot as the two remained tied.

Coming into Lloydminster, Nolin has an 18.5-point lead on Laboucane,

and is 54.5 points in front of his brother Vern, who sits in fifth. Unless disaster strikes in Lloydminster, Nolin is as much as a lock as you can get to find himself in the final dash for the truck, even if he views this race as just another race.

“It’s the same as always,” said

Nolin. “You do it one day at a time and keep things rolling along.”

His top spot on the CPCA standings should come as no surprise, consid-ering he was the only driver this year who can say they finished in the top 10 at every single race he entered. Being consistent is something has become known for, and this season no one has done it better.

For the entire season Nolin has had the field of drivers chasing him, but he has yet to relinquish his position on top. But even having every driver aiming for his top spot is not enough to throw the Rapid View native into a panic heading into Lloydminster.

“You got everybody chasing you, that’s always there,” said Nolin. “But I’m not thinking of the point standings when I head out onto the race track.”

Nolin has witnessed his brother Vern win the Canadian champion-ship the past two years, but has yet to add the crown to his own trophy case. It would be a dream come true to be the Canadian champion, defeating the other top three drivers in the final dash, and would be the top moment of his career.

Nolin last raced in the dash back in 2006.

“I’ve been trying to do it a long time, I’ve been to the final four a couple of times and been in some big dashes, but never been victorious,” said Nolin. “So I’m going to give it all I got the last four days here and hit for that last day on Sunday.”

With being the king of the moment all season, Nolin could be making the selection of barrel he wants to come off of in the final dash. While track conditions play a huge part in the decision, Nolin said he has an outfit for every barrel, so he is confident off any of them.

But having that No. 1 barrel spot with perfect conditions may just make the dream of being a Canadian champion much easier.

The story of Brian Laboucane has one more show to go, and the St. Walburg native is giving it one last drive to turn and burn for a Canadian championship.

The 65-year-old Laboucane has only five days left in his career as a professional chuckwagon driver and will undoubtably be in the hunt for a brand new truck as an early retire-ment gift to himself in Lloydminster. It’s something he has won multiple times before, his last coming in 2006,

but to win it in his final year on the track would the icing on the cake.

And with his driving record and how well he has handled the power of his horses this season, it could be an exceptional retirement party.

“I’m looking forward to it, the horses are running and finishing, they

like the long track,” said Laboucane. “I think it’s going to work out. I’d rather be first, but going into (Lloy-dminster) you just have to stay in the top four.”

Only once this season has Laboucane finished outside the top 10. That came on the long track in Onion Lake, where penalties pushed him to 32nd place. But since then he had his last run at the Calgary Stampede, and posted three straight fifth place finishes in the final three races of the season.

He received a whole-hearted goodbye from the Calgary crowd, a place he has drove at for the past 36 years and should receive the same reaction in Lloydminster as he makes his way around the track for the final time. The emotion of his final season hit him from the start, even if it wasn’t overtly noticeable.

For Laboucane, he admitted that even though he can still hold the power of the four horses, and will miss the adrenaline rush from the sound of the horn, it’s time to step away from driving.

“It’s hit, I’ve know right from the beginning and the goodbye they gave me in Calgary was great,” said Laboucane. “It’s a sad thing knowing you’re pulling out of there for the last time, but it’s time to quit. I’m still physically fit, I can still drive, but it is time for me to quit. And I’ve accepted that.”

The only question that remains is, will his final drive by the Lloydmin-ster grandstands be with a Canadian championship or just a final tip of his hat?

It’s something Laboucane wants to win, but heading into Lloydminster, he is focused on that show first and foremost. He has held the second position for the vast majority of the season and has a 23-point lead on Layne Bremner and a 25.5 on Kris Molle. The current defending champion Vern Nolin is also just on the cusp of the final dash barrels, and Laboucane’s son Jamie is also looking for a good showing to join his father in the race for the truck.

“I focus on every race,” said Laboucane. “You go out there and do what you have to do in that race. You have to be clean and try and be as quick as you can. Then whatever happens, happens, because if you start looking down the road at what is going to happen Sunday night and not focusing on that day, then maybe you’ll make a mistake that day. I don’t look ahead more than the race I am in.”

The top two positions have changed very little throughout the season. Shane Nolin off one and Brian Laboucane off two. But after that pair has been a mix of players

in the final two barrel positions. And it is those two final positions that remain up for grabs heading into the Lloydminster show.

If the dash were today, Layne Bremner would come off the three barrel. But everything on the long track and in front of the grandstand

can change on a moment’s notice, so for Bremner to keep his position in the dash, like every driver he will have to turn clean and burn fast.

“Hopefully we can stay there and come Sunday we are in the final and can have a chance at a run at a truck,” said Bremner. “That is all you are

shooting for now.”A dash finish would be Bremner’s

highest finish in his six-year career. He has yet to make an appearance in the top four race, with his best finish coming in 2012 with a ninth place result. He was the CPCA Rookie of the Year driver in 2009, and won the rookie driver award in Calgary in 2011.

While he has had a few second places finishes this season, including at Onion Lake, St. Walburg and Frog Lake, he has yet to add a show cham-pionship to his young resumé.

So wouldn’t it be something else if the Rapid View native added Canadian champion to his list of accomplishments before he even wins his first show.

“Everybody shoots for that when they start the year,” said Bremner. “That’s everybody’s goal just to win, that is the major thing.”

Lloydminster is seemingly just another race to the chuckwagon drivers, who will show up to the track and run through their motions as they would in Wainwright or Dewberry. With only a 13-point lead on two-time defending champion Vern Nolin, who current sits in fifth, Bremner will be doing a little looking over his shoulder in the standings to make sure he secures a top four position for the final dash on Sunday.

But he said he can’t worry about what others do, he can only run the way he has all season long.

“I just treat it as another race and if we make it in we do, if we don’t, we had a shot at it,” said Bremner. “That’s all we can hope for.”

With Kris Molle, Nolin and Jamie Laboucane right behind him in the standings, the competition is sure to pick up in Lloydminster as they jockey for position. Bremner said he doesn’t mind racing against the top drivers every night because it only makes his heat faster, giving himself a better time.

But to keep his spot, he will need to stay a step in front of some of the most the CPCA has to offer.

Since the Calgary Stampede there has not been a better driver on tour than Kris Molle.

He finished first in St. Walburg after coming back from Calgary, earn day in Frog Lake and in Turtleford,

he finished in second place, yet won day money on all three days.

How did he lose then after the fast time on all three nights? His PWM Steel outfit was 17th on Day 1 of competition, yet his second non-points outfit still ran the fastest time of the night.

Needless to say, Molle is running

as fast as anyone heading into Lloy-dminster. And with such an impres-sive second half to the season, he now finds himself in fourth position, with his eye on a place in the final dash for the Canadian title.

“I’m just ecstatic, but I am just going to take one day at a time,” said Molle. “I’d love to, more than anything, run

for that truck on Sunday. Win, lose, or draw it doesn’t matter, just to be in that final heat is such an honour at the end of the year.”

Molle’s outfit, including his outriders, are all coming together at the right time. In Calgary, 10 seconds of penalties with knocked over barrels knocked him out of the races in the first two days, but that didn’t stop Molle from racing and defeating some of the best on the track, including WPCA drivers Kelly Sutherland and Gary Gorst.

Led by a powerful lead team, Molle, who hadn’t won a race in his four-year career, added a show championship to his resumé, which also includes a Rookie of the Year award in 2011 from the CPCA, and this year he was guaranteed the Orville Strandquist Memorial Award for rookie driver in Calgary, though, no top one would say he drove like a rookie. The Rangeland Derby was the arrival of Kris Molle and a Canadian championship could be the start of the next legacy chuckwagon driver.

“Calgary was honestly a huge confidence boost for me, running against the best in the world,” said Molle. “I want to be that Wayne Knight one day, that Vern Nolin, those champions that are winning trucks. Those Ray Mitsuings, they are legends, the people you look up to.”

But nothing is guaranteed just yet. Molle has a 9.5-point lead on Vern Nolin, and a 19-point lead on Jamie Laboucane. Both were in last year’s final dash and will look to make their move once again to be racing for the truck and Canadian championship.

Like all drivers, Molle said he just needs to take the Lloydminster show just like any other and race clean. But if Molle takes Lloydminster like he has the past three shows since returning from Calgary, it will be a different pair of Nolin and Laboucane that will have to worry about him on their stove rake, or trying to catch up to his.

The Lloydminster show is the last four days for drivers to make a move up the standings. While the top four

barrels feature the best in the CPCA this season, behind them is some competition that many would rank in the top five in CPCA every year.

Only 9.6 points separates Vern Nolin from a return trip to the final dash.

The current two-time defending champion has had his work cut out for him this season, but remains on the cusp of drivers who can make the leap into the top four spots off a single falter. The reigning champion is not who the dash runners want to see in their rearview mirror as they head for home, so running clean will be a must in Lloydminster.

Behind Nolin is Jamie Laboucane who needs to make up 19 points if he wants to make a run in the dash. Laboucane has yet to run the dash himself, as last year he finished in the top four but an injury ruled him out of the dash.

And behind them is the six time Canadian champion from Loon Lake, Sask., Ray Mitsuing, who twice this season has found himself in the dash for cash in Onion Lake and Frog Lake, a place he won this year. Mitsuing sits just 20 points back of the final barrel.

“It’s a long four days in Lloydmin-ster,” said Jamie Laboucane. “I’m not

the one who can have problems too. I’m just going to go in there and hook the best up and try and be competi-tive and see what happens after four days.”

Laboucane has been on both sides of the coin, being in the top four heading into Lloydminster, while this year he will have to come from behind. He said the pressure is equal on both sides, but coming from behind you don’t have a spot in the dash to give up, so you might as well make that extra push, even if it does cost you a penalty.

“Lots of people use to say that coming from behind you have nothing to lose so you might as well just go for it,” said Laboucane. “But at the same time, those guys up there just have to stay consistent and just not hit barrels and they will be fine, where as I will have to push a little bit harder. I’ll take it day by day, hook what I got and see what happens at the end of the show.”

Sports36

On the cusp of the dash

Defending two-time Canadian Champion Vern Nolin is on the outside looking in heading into the Lloydminster show and will need to pick up a few extra points if he wants to make a run at a third straight championship.

Jamie Laboucane fell out of the top four in Turtleford and will need to make up ground from the sixth position in order to race against his dad in the final dash on Sunday.

Ray Mitsuing will need some help to get into the final dash and he will also need some fast times to capture his seventh championship.
