Introduction to the Project:

You are a member of the Ambassadors of La Huasteca Canyon committee specializing in developing and implementing park tourism programs. Current tourism attractions within Monterrey include La Cola del Caballo, Las Grutas del Garcia and Chipinque. ASFM hopes to put on display a permanent information center about the Huasteca by the entrance of the school to showcase the beauty and elegance of the Huasteca Canyon by highlighting the natural gems and geological attractions within the canyon.

You have been asked to apply your knowledge of the concepts below to design a product that could be used in the parks tourist center to illustrate & highlight rock formations in Huasteca Canyon. The product that you design will be on display for public viewing at Celebrate Huasteca! – A celebration of Huasteca hosted by ASFM during finals week.

Mathematics at La Huasteca!!! DESIGN AN ECO-TOURISM ATTRACTION

***You can work on this project alone or in pairs

The Huasteca Canyon is known internationally for routes to climb, rappel, hike, and zip-line as well as routes for other eco-tourist activities. Pretend that you are working for an ECO-TOURISM company that is designing a new eco-tour at the Huasteca Canyon. The attraction tour should start on at the foot of a mountain called Independencia, and continue to the peak of that mountain which is 7000m above sea-level. The tour should end at the peak of another mountain called “Fifteen” which is 4000m above sea level. From there people will take a bus back to the start point. The tour should have all of these activities in it: HikingRock-climbingRappellingZip-liningCrossing hanging bridgesCable cars

Day 1:

Make a scaled map of how all your activities will fit in sequence in the Independencia - Peak Fifteen area of the Huasteca landscape using the “Map Template” you will be given in class. In the beginning, use a pencil to do this. 1) You should draw and color in this map (5pts). 2) You should label all start and end points of each activity on your map. Start and end each activity on a “landing”. Landings are denoted as thick horizontal lines on your map. You don’t have to use all the landings on the map (6pts).

3) You should label all activities on your map (6pts). 4) You should make a legend (on another piece of paper) that tells the reader the actual distance that each centimeter of your map is equal to in meters in scientific notation. The legend should also show the symbol for each activity on your map (10pts). 5) Make sure your name is on your map.

Chemical reactions break down the bonds holding rocks together, causing them to fall apart, forming smaller pieces. Chemical weathering is more common in locations where there is a lot of water because water is important to many of the chemical reactions that can take place. Warmer temperatures are also more friendly to chemical weathering. The most common types of chemical weathering are listed below.

● Oxidation takes place when oxygen combines with other elements in rocks to form new types of rock. These new substances are usually much softer, and thus easier for other forces to break apart.

● Hydrolysis occurs when water combines with the substances in rocks to form new types of substances, which are softer than the original rock types. These allows other forces such as mechanical weathering to more easily break them apart.

● Carbonation takes place when carbon dioxide reacts with certain types of rocks forming a solution, that can easily be carried away by water

1. How do you think chemical weathering has affected the rocks in the Huasteca canyon? Why? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Acid Rain

● Acid rain describes any form of precipitation with high levels of nitric and sulfuric acids. It can also occur in the form of snow, fog, and tiny bits of dry material that settle to Earth.

● Rotting vegetation and erupting volcanoes release some chemicals that can cause acid rain, but most acid rain falls because of human activities. The biggest culprit is the burning of fossil fuels by coal-burning power plants, factories, and automobiles.

● When humans burn fossil fuels, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released into the atmosphere. These chemical gases react with water, oxygen, and other substances to form mild solutions of sulfuric and nitric acid.

2. Do you think Monterrey has acid rain? Explain why or why not.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Plant Acids

Plants can also cause chemical weathering. Plants produce weak acids that dissolve certain minerals in rocks. Lichens are a type of living thing that produce weak acids capable of dissolving the minerals in rocks.

3. Do you think that a single plant is capable of turning parent rock into topsoil by means of mechanical and chemical weathering during its lifetime? SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTIONS

1) Interview Questions -- Before hearing our “guest speakers” talk about the Huasteca Canyon, it is required that you write down 8 questions that you can ask on your “Interview Questions” sheet about the canyon based on the 5 Themes of Geography. You will use this sheet with you to the record the answers to your questions. This sheet must be submitted for evaluation.2) Selecting your Geography Pieces – Each of the 5 Themes of Geography must be represented somewhere in your project. Therefore, in your group it is required that you divide up the 5 Themes of Geography amongst yourselves.

Each group member must cover at least two of the pieces. All 8 need to be researched! These 8 Pieces Include: 1) Location (Relative and Absolute) 2) Place (Physical) 3) Place (Traditions) 4) Movement (People)5) Human-Environment Interaction (Depend on) 6) Human-Environment Interaction (Adapt to) 7) Human Environment Interaction (Modify) 8) Region (Vegetation/Climate)

***Once you have decided which piece you will cover, write it down on your “5 Themes of Geography Graphic Organizer.”

3) Research your two pieces of the 5 Themes of Geography. This will require that you:

A) Finding appropriate sources to use for your research (guest speakers, photographs, books, Internet, etc). You need to use a minimum of THREE sources to answer your “pieces” of the 5 Themes. Two of your sources can be the information you collect from the guest speakers. You can decide from where you get your third source (provided that it gives you the information that you need) – ie. Internet, newspaper, photo, etc.

B) Taking notes about what you have learned about your “piece” in the middle column of your “5 Themes of Geography Graphic Organizer.” Once you have enough research, set aside the sheet until you are able to share your information with your group. After talking with your group, you can decide how you will apply this information in your project (Complete column 3). Hand in to be evaluated.

C) Complete 3 Baloney Detection Kit Sheets evaluating your sources.

D) Using the Son of Citation Machine (www . citationmachine . net ) you must create a “Works Cited” list that have a minimum of three sources used (MLA FORMAT). This is to be handed in for evaluation. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SELECT THE CORRECT SOURCE FOR THE CITATION YOU ARE MAKING. DON’T CLICK ON “WEB-BASED DOCUMENT” IF YOUR SOURCE IS A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.
