DESCRIPTION

Introduction The CP5 tri-stimulus contact colorimeter works with application software, such as ColorPro by CalMAN, to calibrate video displays quickly and accurately, with minimal manual adjustment, especially when used with a Sencore video generator. The CP5 provides excellent low light level sensitivity and accuracy and can be used on all direct view and rear projection display types.

CP5 Colorimeter Features The CP5 Colorimeter provides precise and convenient measurement and calibration of all direct-view and rear projection displays, including LCD, plasma, CRT, DLP, SXRD, and D-ILA displays. Note: Use the Sencore OTC1000 Optical ColorPro sensor for proper calibration of all front projection systems. The CP5 colorimeter measurements closely match human eye response, using highly accurate tri-stimulus filtered sensors. The CP5 is capable of accurately measuring down to 0.01 foot Lamberts, with fast measurement updates, giving more accurate background and picture colors, especially in the darkest pictures, where the human eye is most critical of color accuracy. Fast, constant-rate measurement updates means you never wait for a measurement while making display calibration adjustments. Auto Dark Calibration eliminates a manual calibration step to simplify your calibration and eliminate measurement errors.

OPERATION

Startup Connecting Equipment A USB port is required on your PC to connect and power the ColorPro V meter. If you connect the CP5 to your computer before you run the application software, most software utilities designed for use with this colorimeter, will automatically detect and initialize communication with the CP5.

Running the Application Software When you have connected the ColorPro V to the PC, double-click the application software shortcut icon on your PC desktop to start the program. Confirm communications with the sensor by making measurements with the application software or navigating to the software section dedicated to the meter device and establishing communications. Dark Calibration Dark calibration is not required on the CP5 ColorPro sensor. Calibration is automatic upon initialization with the application software. Operational Hints Ambient Light The ColorPro V is sensitive to ambient light. When you calibrate a display be sure to minimize or eliminate any room light. If room light reaches the front glass, it will enter the cabinet, be internally reflected, and come back out of the display, affecting the ColorPro readings. Use the Ambi-Block feature, if provided by the application software, to electronically remove low levels of ambient light from the measurement. You may also use some type of shroud to block light from the race of the display. Sensor Placement The position of the ColorPro V colorimeter on the display face should remain constant during measurement. A position change can cause color coordinate and luminance readings to change as the uniformity of the display is not constant. Sensor Cleaning To be sure that the ColorPro sensor with the suction cups attachment stays attached to the face of the display, be sure that both the face of the display and the suction cup surfaces are free from dirt and grime. Use a paper towel, moistened with liquid glass cleaner, to clean the rubber suction cup surfaces and the face of the display. Alternately, use pre-packaged alcohol-moistened prep pads.

Note: Do not use cleaning solutions other than liquid glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Also, do not apply the cleaner directly to the sensor, only to the paper towel.

USB to Serial Adapter – Driver Installation A USB to Serial Adapter is provided with the CP5 Colorimeter to provide a connection from the application software, such as ColorPro by CalMAN, to a Sencore video generator. This connection from the PC to the generator provides PC software controlled test pattern selection and subsequently automated display calibration testing. The USB to Serial Adapter requires a driver installation on the PC to operate properly. Improper driver installation may initially present an inability to select or control test pattern selection within the ColorPro by CalMan software or earlier CP6000 ColorPro software. The Sencore CP6000 ColorPro software provided a “Cannot Initialize the Video Generator” message when attempting to connect with the generator. The following instructions explain how to load the needed driver file to correct this problem. The ColorPro by CalMAN and original CP6000 software provides commands from the laptop’s serial port to operate a Sencore VP40x series Video Generator. This automation lets the software automatically select video test patterns corresponding with the calibration steps. To enable the software to control the video generator, a serial connection needs to be made from the computer to the generator. A serial cable (39G523) is supplied for this connection.

(39G523) A six foot null-modem serial cable with a 9-pin female D-sub on each end used to connect the PC to the Sencore VP40x generator. In the event that your laptop or PC does not contain a serial port, you can produce a virtual serial port with the use of USB to Serial Port Adapter (Sencore part # USB304). This adapter is supplied with the CP5, enabling use of the ColorPro from common USB laptop/computer ports. The current Sencore USB to Serial Adapter (USB304) is a Chip Technology (Model UC232R-10).

The USB to Serial Adapter requires a driver file be installed so that it can operate. When the driver file is not properly installed, the ColorPro 6000 software presents the message “Cannot initialize the video generator.”

Please note that this message also may indicate an improper serial cable or improper cable connection. A null modem serial cable is required and supplied (39G523). Check the cable and connections before proceeding.

The following are the instructions for installing a driver for the current USB to Serial Adapter. This adapter is sourced from FTDI Chip Technology (Model UC232R-10). Please note that other USB to Serial Adapter models from other companies would require a different driver file than listed in the following steps.

The driver for the USB to Serial Adapter (USB304) is loaded into the installed program file folder for the ColorPro by CALMAN and/or ColorPro 6000 (since version 1.0.2). The needed driver file is loaded into the computer with the initial software installation. To locate and load the driver, navigate to My Computer C:/Program files/Sencore/ColorPro by CalMAN/Drivers or C:/Program files/Sencore/ColorPro 6000/Drivers and find the file labeled CDM 2.02.04.exe. Run the program to execute the installation of the driver.

The driver file is located in C:/Program files/Sencore/ColorPro by CALMAN/Drivers. Run the CDM 2.02.04.exe to execute the installation of the driver. To verify that the driver for the USB to Serial Adapter is installed correctly, take a look in the Device Manager. To get to the Device Manager, right click on My Computer, and go to Properties. Select the Hardware Tab, then the Device Manager tab. Select the Ports entry. You should see a listing such as USB Serial Cable (com 4). Any com number is fine and indicates a successful installation. If you do not see a listing in the port section, an additional step is required. Again within the Device Manager locate the Universal Serial Bus Controllers listing. Locate the FTDI USB Serial Converter listing and double click on it. Navigate to the Advanced tab, enable the VCP listing, and click the OK box. Unplug the USB to Serial Adapter and plug it back in to the PC’s USB port. This should enable a USB Serial Port (Com _) listing within the Device Manager in the Ports section.

APPENDIX A

Measuring Light as the Eye Sees Light The human eye sees light through rod and cone type light receptors. There are red, green, and blue cone type receptors, while the rod receptors give us black and white vision, especially in small detail and low light.

The red, green, and blue cone receptors each have a different response to different colors (frequencies) of light. The average response of the human eye receptors to light across the visible spectrum is shown by the Standard Observer Response graph, developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE).

We call this tristimulus vision, as there are three types of receptors that individually send information to our brain and allow us to perceive different colors for the different mixtures of light energy within the visible spectrum. Tristimulus Measuring Devices

Page 16: CP5 Tri-stimulus Contact Colorimeter - AVPro Store Manual Form7722.pdf · The CP5 tri-stimulus contact colorimeter works with application software, such as ColorPro by CalMAN, to

14

Tristimulus color measurement devices are called colorimeters. This type of device works much the same as the human eye. A filter for each light sensor allows only a precise amount of each color of light to reach the sensor from the source to be measured. The response of each of the three filters is designed to mimic the response of one of the three types of cones in the average human eye.

The measurement information from each of the three light sensors allows us to compute a different measurement result for the different mixtures of light energy within the visible spectrum, in a way that duplicates the response of the human eye/brain combination. To accurately predict the response of the human eye to a combination of light energy at different frequencies, a tristimulus color measurement device must “see” light exactly the same way the human eye sees light. Display Technology Changes Display types that are now on the market produce spectrums of light that are often very different from each other and from the average spectrum produced by CRTs. Some displays produce strong peaks of light at color frequencies where CRTs produce much less light. The mixing results of these color frequencies still give us the familiar red, green, and blue that CRTs produce, but start with different levels of some color frequencies. The important difference between these new display types and the older CRT technology is that new technology displays may produce strong peaks of light at just about any color frequency.

This means that, if a colorimeter is to produce accurate measurement results for all display types, its optical filters must accurately duplicate the CIE standard observer response at all color frequencies, not just at the particular frequencies at which CRTs produce high light output. Its three color sensors must see light over the entire visible spectrum with the exact same amplitude response that the three color sensors of our eye see light. The CP6000 'ColorPro V' uses optical filters which are accurate to the CIE standard observer response at all frequencies of light, not just high output CRT frequencies, and accurately measures all displays of the past, present, and future.
