powered by SwimAmerica™Mason Community Center is proud to feature the Mason Swim Academy, presenting learn-to-swim instruction based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica™. Students will be taught by certified coaches as they progress through ten stations of competency.

The techniques for developing good swimming skills are the same whether your goal is to increase safety around water, enjoy better fitness and health, increase opportunities for recreation, or compete by joining a swim team. The SwimAmerica format was developed by experienced Olympic coaches and is offered in cooperation with the Mason Manta Rays swim team, one of the top swim teams of its size in the country. Let the team’s experience help you or your child become a competent swimmer even if you do not expect to swim competitively.

Group swim lessons are for children 3 to 17 years old. Adults interested in swim lessons are invited to register for private or semi-private swim lessons.

Healthy Summer HabitsEnjoy the summer sun with a few helpful tips from Kelly Burchett, Wellness Supervisor at Mason Community Center.

Fresh air, blue skies, and beautiful city parks and other outdoor amenities are excellent excuses to get outside and get moving. And with a few helpful hints, you’re sure to have fun all summer long.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when working out outdoors:

•   Stay hydrated. Plan to drink BEFORE your outdoor activity to ensure you are properly hydrated. Then drink 1 cup of water for every 20 minutes of activity. Yes, water! unless you’re performing high intensity activities for more than an hour or sweating for more than two hours, energy drinks aren’t necessary to keep you hydrated. If you find that water isn’t sticking with you, then you may need to replace the salt you’ve lost through sweating with an electrolyte sports drink.

•   Protect your skin. The sun can burn you no matter what the air temperature is. Protect yourself by wearing sweat-proof sunscreen with SPF 30 or protective clothing. Without that layer of protection between you and the sun, you are at risk for sunburn and damage that can lead to skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation,

o Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the united States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.

o Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.

o One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Protect your skin and protect your health.

•   Be comfortable. Choose lightweight fabrics with moisture wicking and dry-fit technologies. They pull moisture away to help cool you off and prevent chaffing. Also, think of eye and head protection with sunglasses and hats. Many are made with athletic activity in mind to move with you.

Now that you are ready, join us for an outdoor group fitness class or like us on Facebook and check out our page each week for a recommended outdoor workout!

Enjoy your summer!

Water Instructor BiosPat Springer has been teaching water classes for 15 years. She has been certified by the Aquatics Exercise Association (AEA) since 2000 and has led classes at Mason Community Center since it opened in 2003. Pat is a Registered Nurse and travels the uS to teach classes in

Healing Touch and Clinical Aromatherapy with Essential Oils. She currently teaches shallow water, deep water, and pre/postnatal water classes at Mason Community Center.

kimberly Gebert has enjoyed teaching water exercise at Mason Community Center for nine years. She has been AEA-certified since 2004. Kimberly has a BA in psychology, a BA in movement and sport science, and an MS in sport behavior and performance. Kimberly’s

popular Wednesday morning shallow water class gets your heart pumping as you have fun exercising in the water.

Liz eichler is certified as an aquatics instructor by both AEA and the Arthritis Foundation. She has been teaching at Mason Community Center for four years. Over the last 22 years, she participated in or taught water fitness in Ohio, Delaware, Indiana, and South Carolina. With a background

in theater and arts, she loves to encourage participants to have fun and get in touch with their creative sides!

Sandy Maloney is a recently retired public health nurse and has enjoyed teaching water classes for ten years. She has been teaching deep water classes at Mason Community Center since 2009. Join Sandy for her deep water class on Thursday evenings.

Michelle Chrzanowski has enjoyed taking deep water classes since they were first offered at Mason Community Center in 2007. She enjoyed it so much she became AEA certified in 2010 and has been teaching both shallow and deep water classes since then. Michelle recently

became AF-certified and is looking forward to offering new classes in both the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program and High Intensity Deep Water for cross training.

Jackie Reynolds has been teaching land classes for over 20 years and Zumba® for four years. She has been ACE-certified for 18 years and has been teaching at Mason Community Center for the past eight years. In July 2011, she was licensed in Aqua Zumba® and introduced it

to Mason Community Center. Her infectious personality makes her exercise classes more like a party!

You are an avid exerciser. But have you ever had a situation in which you needed a change due to injury, boredom, or lifestyle change? Have your hips hurt? Or your knees? Or your feet? You want the workout, but your discomfort makes you think twice? Consider a zero-gravity work-out: deep water exercise!

Everyone can benefit from water exercise. You can increase your flexibility, range of motion, balance, and cardio whether you are a high performing athlete, expectant mom, new to exercise, senior citizen, and everyone in between.

The Mason Community Center has one of the best Deep Water Exercise programs around. Deep water classes are offered both mornings and evenings. Class participants shout out reasons why they come: “It’s the best thing for my body!” “I love the freedom of floating!” “I can do more in the water than on land!” “You can really feel your muscles, you can really feel yourself strengthening your core.” “It’s the first time in my life that exercise has been fun!” Tom, who has been taking the class for over a year, adds, “While I still haven’t been invited on to the professional tennis tour, deep water has given me more stamina and more strength in both my upper and lower body.”

High profile athletes and performers have been training in the water for years. Olympic track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee used water training to increase the symmetry of her upper body movements, to better balance her stride. Actors, danc-ers, and stunt performers often practice moves in water to save the wear and tear on joints. And because water slows down the movement, the moves can be perfected. NFL star Terrell Owens claimed on his "T.O Show" that his aqua therapy was his secret weapon after injuries sidelined him.

Physical therapists encourage water exercise for rehab from injury, preparation before surgeries such as knee replace-

ments, and to fight the effects of aging. Both shallow water and deep water have their benefits. Shallow provides the floor for plyometric work for better jumping skills, and to build bone strength. Buoyancy relaxes joints in both deep and shallow water, so that great flexibility and range of motion can be attained. Deep water is a zero-gravity environment in which you are free to expand what is possible for you on land. Carol, who has some arthritis-like symptoms, adds, “This is the only class I have ever taken that makes me sad when I miss it, because it makes my joints and whole body feel good.”

Obstetricians recommend deep water buoyancy to relieve those unique discomforts of pregnancy: varicose veins, sci-atica, back strain, and warmth! “I loved having the support of all the great women my age and older, as well as the support of the water as my belly was growing,” says new mom Alex.

You do not need special equipment; the flotation belts are provided. Wear a suit and bring a water bottle. You will sweat, but just not notice it in the water! At first, our Competition Pool may feel a bit cold, but you quickly adapt, and the tem-perature allows you to work at your optimal intensity without overheating. The Manta Rays and professional swimmers thrive in this pool temperature. Glenda says, “I feel like I get more core work, and I love the water temperature. It is more invigorating and gives me energy.”

visualize YOu in the pool. Notice your increased range of motion. Feel the variety of muscles engaged in water that are different from the ones you use in land workouts. Especially notice how the buoyancy of the water supports you as you enjoy a new and exciting training experience.

Drop into one of our classes soon, and meet Pat, Michelle, Liz, Kim, Jackie, or Sandy. Your body will love you for it!

Clinical exercise Program Helps You Get Back to fitnessAre you ready to go to the gym, but there’s an ache or

pain preventing you from doing so? Maybe it’s linger-ing issues with an old injury or something that’s been an annoyance for a while. Perhaps you are hesitating because you’re not sure whether exercise will help it or make it worse. The solution may be a more medically-based workout program through the Mason Community Center’s clinical exercise program.

This program pairs you with a certified athletic trainer from TriHealth. The athletic trainer will work with you to design a personalized exercise program to ensure your safe return to exercise and activity. All you need is a referral from your physician describing the issue and releasing you to exercise. The certified athletic trainer will then meet with you to discuss your medical condi-tions and design a program focused on your specific needs. The Community Center offers a variety of facili-ties to help you on your wellness journey, ranging from equipment in the fitness center to the track and warm water therapy pool.

GOLF

Good Form Makes Good GolfImprove consistency and increase distance with a tip from Jack Kraemer, assistant golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island.

A good grip and posture are very important in playing more consistent golf. Make sure that your grip is relatively neutral, meaning that the back of your left hand is facing the target and the back of your right hand is facing the opposite direction. Your left thumb should be just right of center on the shaft and two knuckles should be visible. The club should be held more in the fingers of both hands—particularly the left—because many hold the club too much in the palm, which causes a lack of power. Grip pressure should be light as though you were holding a baby chicken.

Your weight should be on the centers of your feet with a slight but comfortable flex in the knees. Bend from the waist, keeping your back straight, and letting your arms hang loose and free. Tension is a huge problem with many players, especially when the pressure is on. Keep the head very steady as there should be very minimal movement up or down.

Good balance, body rotation, and extension of the arms throughout the swing are keys to increasing your distance. Keeping your weight on the centers of your feet at address and mainly on the insides of your feet during the swing will help improve your balance.

Good body rotation and arm extension are big keys to distance. Feel like you are opening and closing a door with the upper half of your body. Get your back facing the target at the finish of your backswing and your chest facing the target at the finish of your swing, with your arms extended as much as possible back and through without being too rigid. You want extension but not tension.

I believe these fundamentals will help you become a more consistent player with increased distance. Remember to practice with a purpose or your practice will be worthless.

TENNIS IN THE PARKS

Tennis in the ParksHeritage Oak ParkTennis programs are provided for juniors and adults. Junior classes will follow the “games” approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play “real tennis” before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment.

Rainout and makeup classes will be scheduled as needed. There is no makeup for missed classes. In case of inclement weather conditions, arrangements will be made. Please call the City of Mason Hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program cancellations or delays due to weather.

Pee WeesThis class is for beginners. Most enrollees will have little to no tennis experience.

Anatomy of a Running/Walking ShoeA tip from Paul Heintz, owner of Mojo Running. Visit Mojo Running’s kiosk in the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center or the main Mojo Running store in West Chester.

Running shoes are the most important piece of equipment a runner/walker has. The proper shoe helps prevent injury and can help make your running gait more efficient. The running shoe market is huge. Most of the running shoe companies make significant investment into the technology and science of running shoes. While running shoes have become more complicated over the years, there are still several basic components.

The outsole: This is the treaded layer on the undersurface of the shoe, usually made from carbon rubber or similar material. It resists wear and provides traction. It may also have a studded or waffle design to enhance traction on softer surfaces.

The midsole: This is considered the most important part of running shoes as it is the cushioning and stability layer between the upper and the outsole. The most common materials for the midsole of running shoes are ethylene vinyl acetate (EvA), polyurethane (Pu) or a combination of the two. Often there is a dual-density midsole that has a firmer material on the inner (medial) side to help limit pronation, rolling in, of the foot. A lot of proprietary technologies developed by different manufacturers go into the midsoles of running shoes, including air, gel, and high-tech plastics materials.

The upper: This is the part of the shoe that wraps around and over the top of the foot. It is typically made of a synthetic mesh material that is light and breathable (to reduce heat from inside the running shoe). The tongue of the upper should be padded to cushion the instep against the pressure from the laces. Often, at the back of the running shoe, the upper is padded to prevent rubbing and irritation against the Achilles tendon.

The heel counter: This is a firm inflexible cup that is built into the upper of running shoes and surrounds the heel. It is usually very firm so that it can control the motion of the rear foot.

Post or footbridge: This is the firm material in the midsole which increases stability along the inner arch of the running shoe.

How to choose running shoes:All runners need the best protection that running shoes can provide. Your running shoe needs to absorb shock and control motion while being flexible and durable. Because of the complexity of individual foot biomechanics and the seemingly unlimited types of running shoes on the market, it is a good idea to go to a specialty running shoe store like Mojo Running in West Chester. They will have the expertise to help you find the best running/walking shoe for your individual needs.

To help you get the best shoe, here are a few tips:• Shop in the mid to later part of the day. Feet swell during the day

and they will get bigger when you are running.• Wear socks that you would normally wear while running.

(Remember— cotton is rotten and responsible for the majority of blisters. Go with wicking materials.)

• A number of other factors should be taken into account when deciding which shoe is best for you, including how you run, your weight, foot pronation or other problems, past injuries, anticipated changes in mileage, and more.

• It helps to bring in an old pair of shoes with you so the sales person can see where your shoes tend to wear the most.

Which is the best running/walking shoe? There is no ‘best’ running shoe. Every runner is different, every brand is different; each model is different—the challenge is to match the features of each runner to the features of a particular brand and model of running shoe. This is why going to a specialty running store is so important and vital to your healthy and continued running/walking program.
