Five Coyotes Drafted in Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft

The Major League Baseball draft came to an end Saturday June 11th, and the CSN baseball team was proud to have 5 players selected in the first year player draft. The Coyotes lead all Colleges and Universites in the state on players drafted in this years MLB Draft.

Once again Head Baseball Coach Nick Garritano has proven that he knows how to develop players and prepare them for the next level, since his time at CSN (6 seasons) he has seen 14 players drafted to the Major Leagues. “It was a great weekend for CSN baseball. It is more important and gratifying to see guys get drafted or continue their education at division level schools than just winning baseball games.” Garritano said. “ All of these young men have outstanding opportunities to have successful baseball careers and more importantly will be successful after their baseball careers are over. We are very proud of these young men and wish them nothing but the best of luck. They will always be a part of our CSN Coyote baseball family.”

The first player drafted was Mikey York, a right handed pitcher by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 5th round, No. 150 overall. York a freshman from Basic H.S. had a 5-0 record with a 1.72 earned run average, 46 strike outs, 7 total earned runs in 36.2 innings pitched. York only allowed 12 free passes via the walk while surrendering only 17 hits all season. He was selected Region 18 pitcher of the year. He has signed with the Rays and will begin his career with the Princeton Rays.

Next off the board was Tyler Hallead a right handed pitcher selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 24th round, No. 707 overall. Hallead was a sophomore who transferred in from Concordia University. Hallead posted a 4-1 record doing most of his work out of the bullpen in his 25 innings pitched. In his 11 appearances he had a 4.32 ERA and struck out 23. He has signed with the Phillies and will begin his career with the Williams-port Crosscutters.

Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Gabe Gonzalez, a right handed pitcher in the 27th round, No. 809 overall. Gon-zalez a sophomore from Arbor View H.S. was previously drafted out of high school by the Texas Rangers (2014) and last year by the Philadelphia Phillies (2015) but did not sign. During Gonzalez’s career at CSN he made 23 starts for the Coyotes posting a 3.92 earned run average over 103.1 innings pitched. Gonzalez struck out 106 batters and had a 1.96 opponents batting average against. Gonzalez was selected 2nd Team All-Region 18 Pitch-er. He has signed with the Diamondbacks and will begin his career with the Missoula Osprey.

The Houston Astros drafted Brody Westmoreland, a multi tool player who can play infield and outfield, in the 30th round, No. 907 overall. Westmoreland a sophomore from Highlands Ranch, CO was drafted by the Colora-do Rockies in 2014 but chose to attend San Diego State University, after one year at SDSU Westmoreland trans-ferred to CSN. During his season at CSN Westmoreland had a .375 batting average, 40 runs batted in, lead the team with 14 home runs, and had a staggering .735 slugging percentage. Not only was Westmoreland a force at the plate and field, he also excelled in the classroom. He was awarded the CSN Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, NJCAA Academic All-American. Other accolades he collected during his tenure at CSN were 3rd Team NJCAA All-American, 1st Team All Region 18, and CSN Male Rookie of the Year. His numbers at CSN has him in good company in the record books as well. He sits third in most home runs, trailing only Marvin Campbell (15), and Bryce Harper(31), and is second all-time in slugging percentage (.726) once again trailing Bryce Harper’s (.987). He has signed with the Astros and will begin his career with the Gulf Coast League Astros.

The New York Mets drafted Jordan Hand, a red shirt freshman outfielder in the 39th round, No.1180 overall, Hand was also drafted by the Mets in 2014 but chose to attend California State Fullerton. Hand a Las Vegas na-tive from Shadow Ridge H.S. who transferred to CSN from California State University Fullerton posted a .355 batting average with 6 home runs and 39 runs batted in, and a .601 slugging percentage. Hand was awarded NJCAA Academic All-American, and 2nd Team All Region 18. Hand is still in negotiations but is planning on attending Dallas Baptist University in the Fall.

Lady Coyotes New Home for Softball Starting August 1, 2016 Lady Coyote Softball will have a new home on campus for the first time in the history of the program. A special thank you for the support of President Richards and the work of Sherri Payne, Senior Associate Vice President and her staff. A new artificial turf softball facility will provide the on campus practice and game opportunities the Lady Coyotes have earned and deserved.

The facility is being built by Tiberti Construction featuring a press box, hitting cages, bull pens, storage, Daktronics video scoreboard, field level seating and a grandstand for spectators.

The addition of a laundry facility for the team, concrete sidewalk, and landscaping will enhance both fans and student-athlete experience. While the field will initially remain with out lights, when funding can be obtained lights will be added.

Athletic Director Dexter Irvin believes the facility will be a tremendous attribute to the softball program that will provide great recruiting and participation opportunities for the women’s softball program. This facility com-bined with the locker room and clubhouse that was completed in 2015, puts Coyote softball in a position to be competitive in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and the NJCAA.

From The Desk of The Athletic Director

This Spring was an exciting time for Coyote Athletics both on and off the field. In athletics it’s easy for our competitive nature to take over and focus on winning and losing and to lose focus of our main goal which is to provide athletes an avenue to further their education and earn a degree.

I was very pleased with the academic success of our student-athletes, we had 11 student athletes selected to the NJCAA Academic All American list. I am extremely happy with the work our athletes put in the classroom and our coaches in making academics a priority.

To have our baseball program win the SWAC conference, post a great record (40-15), have five students drafted and carry a great 3.10 team GPA is outstanding. It is a tribute to the emphasis our baseball staff has placed on academic and athletic success. Producing an All American and having so many students over a 3.0, Coach Garritano should be proud of the accomplishment in his program.

While our softball team struggled on the field, I was pleased to see them rebound academically and have a good recruiting year. With some outstanding selections to the all-conference and all region roster and the recruiting class we have I think the future is bright for our softball program.

I am looking forward to seeing the difference of having an on campus field makes and the first full time coach in program history. The softball field is on schedule and should be turned over to us in time for fall softball season to begin. Construction has moved along quickly and everything is coming together. The artificial turf should be completed by next week and the remaining details of the project are moving along quickly. To have that much permanent green should be a real attribute for our softball program.

College of Southern Nevada Hires Josh Taylor as Softball CoachTaylor joins the CSN Coyotes from the University of Nevada, Reno

College of Southern Nevada Athletic Director Dexter Irvin has announced the hiring of Josh Taylor to lead the Coyote Softball program. Taylor, who becomes the fourth coach in program history, brings with him a wealth of experience from the collegiate, and professional levels.

“Josh Taylor is a great person and coach. He will not only fit in well with our “coyote family” but he will contribute and expand our ability

to be successful in other athletic areas as well as softball,” said Irvin. “I am very thankful for the effort, class and camaraderie that Coach Montalto displayed as our softball coach. She is a first class person and I appreciate and respect her effort and desire to be successful.”842

In his last collegiate coaching position, Taylor spent five seasons as the assistant softball coach at NCAA Division I University of Nevada, Reno. While at Reno, Taylor helped guide the Wolf Pack to a school record .965 team fielding percentage (2013), National NCAA team doubles leader (2013). His teams posted a record of .500 or better three times, including two 30-win seasons, during his five years at Reno.

Before taking the job at Reno, Taylor was the head coach at Feather River College (113-59 Overall .657 winning percentage), where he led the Golden Eagles to three 30 win seasons, 3 Super Regionals, 4 Regionals, and a Golden Valley Conference Title.

“Coach Taylor brings a great resume of success and experience to CSN Softball. I believe he and his staff will expand and exceed our expectations for Coyote Softball,” said Irvin. “Josh is a team player and understands the dynamics of necessary effort and contribution that is required both academically and athletically to be successful at our level. Our players may want to buckle up and hold on as they prepare for the season. This is going to be a great ride!”

In 2010 Taylor’s team was awarded the CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association) Team Scholar Award for the highest team GPA in California (3.38). He was also named Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year (2010), and Gatorade Coach of the Year – Feather River College (2011).

“I am excited to lead the College of Southern Nevada softball program. I would like to thank Dexter Irvin and the entire search committee for this opportunity,” Taylor said. “It is a tremendous honor to lead this program moving forward.”

Taylor began his baseball career at Reedley College before transferring to University of Nevada, Reno. During his time at Reno the Wolf Pack was the 1994 Big West Conference Champions, participated in the NCAA Baseball Championships, and reached a National ranking of 6th in the Nation.

In 2015 he was inducted into the University of Nevada Reno Hall of Fame as part of the 1994 Championship Team.

College of Southern Nevada’s Baseball program. By James Hernandez

The Coyotes finished the year with at least 40 wins and an outright Scenic West Athletic Conference championship for the second consecutive season.

The 2016 Coyotes compiled the second best offensive season in program history with a cumulative team batting average of .328, 423 runs scored, 536 hits, 163 extra base hits, 56 home runs, 367 runs batted in and slugging .508.

These eye popping numbers are second only to the 2010 team that was led by reigning National League most valuable player, Bryce Harper.

Seven everyday position players batted .300 or better led by All region 18 first team selection catcher Drew Newson (.410 BA*, 30 runs, 59 hits, 45 RBI, 7 HR). Drew was joined on the All Region 18 first team by first baseman Brody Westmoreland ( University of Central Florida commit, .366 BA, 51 runs, 64 hits, 50 RBI, 15 HR*) third baseman Blake Wiggins ( .315 BA, 50 runs, 56 hits, 59 RBI*, 12 HR) and pitchers A.J. Jones ( Long Beach State commit, 9-1 w/l*, 3.91 E.R.A. 74 K’s*) Mikey York ( Arizona State commit, 6-0 W/L, 2.03 E.R.A.* 61 K’s, 48.2 IP) and Alec Hutt ( Point Loma Nazarene commit, 4.15 E.R.A. 40 K’s, 12 saves*).

Five Coyotes found their way onto the All Region 18 second team, that group included freshman middle infielders Dillon Johnson 2B (.338 BA, 53 runs* 66 hits, 39 RBI, 5 HR) Jay Martz SS (.297 BA, 37 runs, 49 hits, 37 RBI, 2 HR) along with sophomore outfielders CJ Latham (.327 BA, 50 runs, 64 hits, 24 RBI, 2 HR, 28 SB*) Jordan Hand ( Dallas Baptist commit, .337 BA, 48 runs, 60 hits 45 RBI, 6 HR) and Gabe Gonzalez (San Diego State commit, 5-1 w/l, 3.77 E.R.A. 69 K’s, .190 b/avg. against).

Designated hitter Jarrett Perns earned a well deserved All Region 18 honorable mention after hitting .344 with 54 hits, 28 RBI and three long balls.

Alec “Super” Hutt repeated as Relief pitcher of the year after setting the schools single season save record with 12.

Top MLB prospect Mikey York took home the All Region 18 pitcher of the year award after dazzling scouts all year with a mid 90’s fastball and an above average curveball and changeup. The son of former big leaguer Mike York was unbeaten in thirteen starts, holding opponents to a microscopic .153 b/avg. against, which was tops in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

CSN head baseball coach Nick Garritano took home Region 18 coach of the year honors for the second year in a row, and the Coyotes have won 86 games over the past two seasons. With some of the premier talent in the SWAC slated to return in 2017 CSN will undoubtedly be favored to bring home a third consecutive conference crown as they continue to be one of the elite baseball programs in all of junior college. * denotes team category leader in 2016.

Young “Pack” deals with growing pains in 2016

By James Hernandez

The 2016 season was difficult for the entire College of Southern Nevada Softball program as the young lady Coyotes dealt with growing pains en route to a 10-40 record, the programs lowest win total since the 2006 campaign.

With only three sophomores returning from a 2015 team that won 34 games, first year, and interm head coach Amanda Montalto was tasked with the challenge

of breaking in seven freshman starters on offense as well as two brand new starting arms inside the circle.

Despite its record the 2016 Lady Coyotes played with the spirit and determination we have been accustomed to seeing out of past CSN teams. The heart and soul of this group was first team All Region 18 outfielder Maggie Manwarren. Despite missing ten games to various injuries Manwarren was able to finish the season with a .429 BA* 39 runs* 51 hits* and a.531 on base percentage*. Maggie will continue her collegiate softball career at Colorado Mesa University next Fall and becomes the latest in a long and distinguished list of Lady Coyotes to continue their collegiate playing career after departing CSN.

The cupboard won’t be bare in 2017 offensively as CSN returns the bulk of its lineup led by former Green Valley High School standout and second team All Region 18 performer Jinger Meuir. The ‘swiss army knife” of the team played in all 49 games and the freshman impressed with a .326 BA, scoring 37 runs and finishing second on the team with 46 hits.

The talented trio from Palo Verde High School Mackenzie McBride ( .320 BA, 20 runs, 33 hits 11 RBI) Emily Guthrie ( .229 BA, 22 hits, 11 RBI) and Jordan Menke (.258 BA, 15 runs, 24 hits, 12 RBI, 2 HR) all played in at least 39 games in 2016.

Local Centennial High School product Kara Simpson ( .268 BA, 16 runs, 34 hits, 27 RBI 4 HR*) is a five tool talent that has the potential to be the Lady Coyotes top player in ’17’.

With a brand new on campus softball field slated to be complete in time to begin the 2017 Spring season, optimism around the softball program is at an all-time high as the program looks towards the future and strives to build a winning softball culture here in Southern Nevada.

Josh TaylorHead Softball Coach

Softball As the new Head Coyote Softball Coach I am thrilled to be a part of the “Pack” family. Our coaching staff is here to assist our players in achieving their athletic, academic and other personal goals by developing a passion, loyalty, discipline and work ethic in their daily preparation. We will do everything we can to make this an enjoyable experience but understand that anything worthwhile will require sacrifices. Our doors are always open to our players to discuss any personal or team issues. In return we ask that our players bring a positive attitude, a commitment to improve each day, follow team policy, respect the coaches, teammates, opponent and officials, put the team before self, represent our school and community with pride and give 100% in all they do.

I will look to recruit quality student athletes within the area, I also recruit top student athletes out of the area and throughout the United States. I pursue student-athletes that fit both the academic and athletic requirements of the College of Southern Nevada.

Recruiting is a process that occurs on a daily basis. Our staff will out work our opposition to recruit, and develop our players. We will market our college, ourselves, our strength of schedule, our facility and past success of the softball program. I am currently meeting with and communicating with travel ball coaches throughout the area. My first priority is to keep the Las Vegas/Henderson talent home, from there, I will use my contacts to recruit out of state student-athletes.

After the taste of some early wins in the season last year, the Coyotes are hungry for more success on the court. The team will look to add depth to its line up which will return 7 of 8 starters - including all-conference honorable mention JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson; as well as, Christina Beaver, Olivia Stet, and Bailey Bergquist who were among the top 10 in Scenic West stats for assists, hitting efficiency and kills per set respectively. Anticipated to make an early impact are middle hitters Tajanae Davis (Las Vegas High School) and Jaycie Johnson (Bonanza High School). The Coyotes will also benefit from the defensive strength of Cayla Cooper (Durango), Kathy Hernandez (SECTA) and Emma Gutierrez (Palo Verde). Completing the 2016 recruiting class includes Esmeralda Solano (Sandy Valley), Brooke Levengood (Basic), and Rachael

Watkins (Lake Mead Christian Academy). The coaching staff looks forward to seeing all of these young ladies improve and contribute.

Currently 13 of the 18 players on the 2016 roster are enrolled in summer classes and have been utilizing CSN Coyote weight room within the parameters of NJCAA regulations. The girls are committed to pushing themselves and recognize the benefit of individual strength training. The girls will also be up to the task of improving their overall team GPA (3.2) and continuing to make a positive footprint on the Cheyenne Campus. We look forward to seeing our loyal fans, friends, and family in the gym and hope our support continues to grow! Go Coyotes!

It is hard to contain the enthusiasm the CSN Men’s Soccer coaching staff has for the upcoming soccer season. After all, this season will be historic for the fledgling program as it represents the first season in CSN Men’s Soccer history. Speaking with the coaches, it is clear the young athletes have been well-versed on the rare opportunity they have been given. For many it is a second chance (grades, development, life’s road bumps, etc.) to reach their athletic goals. For others, CSN is the perfect fit to continue their academic and athletic journey. Whatever CSN Men’s Soccer represents on their journey, all athletes know this is not an opportunity to waste.

Although the temperatures are spiking this month, don’t be surprised if you see members of the men’s soccer team gutting it out on the tracks, gyms and fields

throughout the Valley. We have set forth an intense preseason condition program and expects all players to arrive physically fit for the demands of the college season. We need to establish a culture that prides itself on hard work and commitment right from the start.

Jennifer SchultzHead Women’s Soccer Coach

Women’s Soccer

Since this is our first season, we will need to make up ground on the competition, and without the appropriate mind set will be in for a long season. The coaches know this, and have recruited not just talented athletes, but athletes with a junkyard dog type of mentality. One thing is for certain, this coaching staff expects success right from the start.

In addition to preparation of the athletes on the field, the coaches are adamant about individual player growth. I expect our athletes to shine on and off the field stressing the importance of academic success. However, academics and soccer are not enough, I want our players to be ambassadors outside the confines of CSN and give back to the community through philanthropic events. Our team must understand that we must show our appreciation both on and off the field to the administration, students and community that have afforded us this great opportunity. Giving back to the community that has given so much to us is the least we can do. The Coyotes will have some preseason scrimmages over the summer, but September 8th marks the home season opener against conference favorite, Utah State University Eastern. We hope to see everyone there!

Uniforms are in, equipment has arrived, rosters are complete and classes have been registered for. The start of our season is less than a month away and the ex-citement is mounting! We have had our share of trials, however things are really looking good!

We have a few second year athletes that I feel confident can bring knowledge and experience to the program and our freshman have a lot of heart and desire to make this a successful season. We are looking forward to bringing the Las Vegas valley with a womens soccer program something that has been needed for some time. The support from the community has been incredible and introducing this new sport to those who weren’t aware has been received in a very positive light.

The preparation for this upcoming season has really given me insight as to what it takes to build a sport from the ground up, and I am really proud of what we have accomplished. I can’t wait to see the ladies all in uniform for the first time, hear that first whistle blow for kickoff, hear the fans cheering from the sidelines as well as the laughter and banter among the players. These firsts will make everything we have all done so rewarding and I am really looking forward to see what we can do! Go Coyotes!
