Science Experiment of the Month
Be a Scientist!
Try this experiment
to test your science
skills: Design a
container that will
keep an egg from
breaking when
dropped from the top
of the stairs or a
ladder or even above
your head. Start by
thinking of materials
that may help
cushion your egg
and experiment with
different ideas.
Don't worry if you
don't get it right the
first time.......
scientists are always
rethinking and
retesting their ideas!
Coming next
month is Family
Science Night which will be looking at
different science careers.
Do you want to be a
scientist?
All scientists have some common personality traits that make them good at their job, like curiosity,
being observant, and creative just to name a few.
Many scientists like to take
complex problems and find solutions to them or create new innovations in technology.
Join us at Family
Science Night Dec. 4th!
Northshore Schools Foundation is looking for a liaison from our school to assist with communication between our school and the Foundation. They also hope to have this person attend their luncheon. If you are interested, contact Michele Leonard via email
at: [email protected].
Scholastic Book Fair!!!
The Canyon Creek Scholastic Book Fair will take place
Monday, November 26-Friday, November 30th in the library.

after school, 3:00-3:30 and during your students' regularly scheduled library time.
Family Night will be Tuesday, November 27, 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the library.
This year we will once again have the opportunity to bring books to
families within our Canyon Creek Community via the "All for Books" campaign (formerly called "One for Books").

Legislative Assembly 2012
It was a weekend of healthy debate, passionate ideas and overall electric energy, and in the end, the delegates to the 2012 Washington State PTA Legislative Assembly voted overwhelmingly to hold the state accountable in making education funding a top priority! After all, it is clearly written in our State’s Constitution – “It is the paramount of the state to provide an ample basic education to all students.”
The overwhelming theme of most the platform issues that were voted on address the need to focus our advocacy on the funding issues for basic education in this state and keep pushing to improve the definition of basic education. The top 5 issues will be the center of the debate for the next two years and the message PTA members will need to take to our leadership in Olympia.
Delegates threw support behind reforms put in place in 2009 and 2010 that redefined basic education to better prepare all children for college and career, make school funding more transparent, and add accountability measures to how schools are run and students taught. In all, 14 issues made the two-year platform. Returning to the Top 5 from the previous two years was - Fund Education First. Closing the Opportunity Gaps moved up from the “also supported" status in 2011, to this year’s Top 5. Two new Top 5 issues call for raising revenue for education funding and programs to support attracting and retaining highly effective teachers.
Here are the priorities your Washington State PTA will be working on for the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions:
TOP 5 –
1. Advance Basic Education Reforms
2. Fund Education First
3. Closing the Opportunities Gap
4. Revenue for Kids
5. Access to Highly Effective Teachers
Also supported (listed alphabetically)
Access, Opportunity and Equity for Special Education
Access to Algebra in Middle School
Access to Quality Early Learning
Great Family Engagement in Every School
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
School Zone Signage
Screening and Support for Struggling Readers
Social Emotional Learning
Training to Support Highly Capable Learners
For a complete guide and description of these issues, please visit the Washington
State PTA website at www.wastatepta.org.

4th Annual Walk-A-Thon Post Event Results!
One benefit of using your
newsletter as a promotional
tool is that you can reuse
content from other
marketing materials, such as
press releases, market
studies, and reports.
While your main goal of distributing a newsletter might be to sell your product or services, the key to a successful newsletter is making it useful to your readers. A great way to add useful
content to your newsletter is
to develop and write your
own articles, or to include a
calendar of upcoming events
or a special offer that
promotes a new product.
You can also research
articles or find “filler”
articles by accessing the
World Wide Web. You can
write about a variety of
topics, but try to keep your
articles short.
Much of the content you put
in your newsletter can also
be used for your Web site.
So, when you’re finished
writing your newsletter,
convert it to a Web site and
post it. ”With all of our
corporate
matching funds
we have raised
over $27,000.”
Thank you to all the staff, parents, family members and students who helped to make
the Walk-A-Thon an INCREDIBLE success. Read on for the results!

Inside Story Headline
The purpose of a newsletter
is to provide specialized
information to a targeted
audience. Newsletters can
be a great way to market
your product or service, and
also to create credibility and
build your organization’s
identity among peers,
members, employees, or
vendors.
First, determine the
audience of the newsletter.
This could be anyone who
might benefit from the
information it contains, for
example, employees or
people interested in
purchasing a product or in
requesting your services.
You can compile a mailing
list from business reply
cards, customer information
sheets, business cards
collected at trade shows, or
membership lists. You might
consider purchasing a
mailing list from a company.
Next, establish how much
time and money you can
spend on your newsletter.
These factors will help
determine how frequently
you publish your newsletter
and its length. You should
publish your newsletter at
least quarterly so that it’s
considered a consistent
source of information. Your
customers or employees will
look forward to its arrival.
Your headlines are an
important part of the
newsletter and should be
considered carefully.
You can also research
articles or find “filler”
articles by accessing the
World Wide Web. You can
write about a variety of
topics, but try to keep your
articles short.
Much of the content you put
in your newsletter can also
be used for your Web site.
Microsoft Word offers a
simple way to convert your
newsletter to a Web
publication. So, when you’re
finished writing your
newsletter, convert it to a
Web site and post it.
The subject matter that
appears in newsletters is
virtually endless. You can
include stories that focus on
current technologies or
innovations in your field.
You may also want to note
business or economic
trends, or make predictions
for your customers or
clients.
If the newsletter is
distributed internally, you
might comment upon new
procedures or improvements
to the business. Sales
figures or earnings will show
how your business is
growing.
Some newsletters include a
column that is updated
every issue, for instance, an
advice column, a book
review, a letter from the
president, or an editorial.
You can also profile new
employees or top customers
or vendors.
Selecting pictures or
graphics is an important part
of adding content.

MELISSA BARTON for being our wonderful staff liaison and advisor for the event.
STEPHANIE TASTAD for designing our shirts! The students, staff and volunteers love the
design and were excited to wear them for the event!
JULIE BOYD for organizing all the volunteers to distribute popsicles to our students! It was a
really nice treat for our students after their walk!
MARK MAYBERRY for being our event day staff liaison. He did everything from taking
photos to using his booming voice to keep the kids moving smoothly through the event.
Thank you for being the voice that could be heard!
MR. GRAY for making the sounds system so easy to run, and helping to provide the terrific
music.
MR. MISNER for supporting us all along the way and donating his time to our kids who
walked the most laps (K-3 lunch with Mr. Misner and 4-6 principal for ½ day).

HOWLER HOORAYS!
With the Fall Season, both, Canyon Creek students and staff
members benefitted from new after school programs offered, and
a little pampering thanks to volunteers through the PTA.
GIANT Howler Hoorays to the following Boeing volunteers who put together a great after school science program for our 4th & 5th graders: Elizabeth Brison, Mark Mueller, James Arneson, Shiva Badie, Michael Klein, and Linda Smith and the following parent volunteers for their help as well: Dianne Kinney, Stephanie Hoerlein, Sherrill Edwards, and Rachelle Whitman. Due to these wonderful volunteers we were able to engage 50 students with some fun physics experiments. We hope to have this program again in the future for those students who were unable to participate this time. To Jeanmarie Gilroy and Shannon Daniel for helping run Lego Club in the fall. To Mary White, Julie Kerr, Melanie Monson and Stephanie Tastad and the many volunteers that made the Walk-A-Thon possible. And last but not least, in November, the Canyon Creek staff enjoyed tailgating with a delicious meal from Jimmy John’s (a special HOWLER HOORAY to the Ombrellaro family).
