The Faculty and Staff of Cowles Library arepleased to provide the Cowles Library AnnualReport. A number of significant steps weretaken during 2013-2014 to anticipate andrespond to student and faculty needs; withscholarly resources and research support servicescontinuing to remain a very high priority.

Drake and the library took a huge step forwardwith the completion of the new archives center.This center gives the library the capability toacquire, build access to, and house materialsthat are unique, and that are of permanentlasting value for scholarship, teaching and thehistorical record. These will be a legacy for futuregenerations to come.

The Library Faculty continues to be engaged atthe state, regional, and national level. Undertheir expertise and leadership, Cowles Library isforging new approaches and pathways tosustaining a network of collaboration andservices with other academic libraries, vendors,and affiliate groups.

We believe that the ongoing development of thelibrary is really a community dialog. We continueto rely on input and communication with libraryusers and patrons as the single most importantmeans to develop the library of the future.During 2014-2015, the Library will undertake amajor review and revision of its strategic plan,goals and objectives. We hope to createmultiple opportunities to dialog with the libraryfaculty and staff as the process moves forward.

Knowledge

CI-CCI UpdateThe Central Iowa – CollaborativeCollections Initiative group of libraries(Central College, Drake University, GrandView University, Grinnell College andSimpson College) are moving forwardtoward their goals of print collectionpreservation and access. Known as CI-CCI, the Initiative is an innovative, sharedcollection model that allows for efficienciesof scale that the libraries could notachieve on their own and represents anongoing committment to print resoures aspart of the academic knowledge base.

A consulting group, Sustainable CollectionsServices, was hired to perform the groupdata analysis. Each library is assigned to“retain” titles that can be readily sharedwith other CI-CCI libraries as requested.The first phase of this project is largelycomplete.

The libraries have completed an extensiveinventory project, using a web-baseddatabase developed by Dan Taylor,Cowles Library's Applications Developer.This insures that a print copy of 143,294unique titles will be maintained as part ofthe shared collection.

Each library will implement it’s ownprocedures to allow collections space tobe freed for other purposes exclusive of theshared retention titles.

CI-CCI has actively begun working on thenext phase of the project which relates tocollaborative collection development,processes that will allow the group to makeacquisitions purchases more effectively.

Some of our New ResourcesNineteenth-Century Collections Online(NCCO)

NCCO is a multi-year global digitizationand publishing program focusing onprimary source collections of thenineteenth century. It consists ofmonographs, newspapers, pamphlets,manuscripts, ephemera, maps,photographs, statistics, and otherdocuments in both Western and non-Western languages. NCCO's initialcollections include Britain, Europe, Africa,Asia, Science, Women and Photography.

ValueLine Investment Survey

The Value Line Investment Survey consistsof professional research andrecommendations on approximately 1,700stocks. The Survey also provides weeklyupdates on the financial markets,recommended portfolios, developmentsinvolving covered securities and specialtopical reports.

Journal of Vistualized Experiments -Neuroscience & Biology

Online peer-reviewed journal devoted toinvestigations of the structure, function,physiology, and pathophysiology of thebrain and nervous system, and thepublication of biological research in avideo format.

Meredith received her MLS in 2011 from theUniversity of Iowa. She then worked asLibrarian at the University of Iowa Hospitalsand in 2012 became director of theAtlantic Public Library. Meredith's positionis Knowledge Management andOperations Specialist. Her primaryresponsibility is cataloging and other dutiesinclude bindery, student supervision andspecial projects.

Laura is a Drake alum who received herMLS from Indiana University in 2012. Sheinterned at Cowles while completing herdegree. Laura assumed the position ofElectronic Resources Manager. She isinvolved in the acquisition, access,administration, evaluation, and support ofall electronic resources at the library andmanages print serials among her otherduties.

Learning

Cabell's DirectoryNow available through Cowles Library,Cabell's Directories help researchers findthe best journal fit for their manuscripts.The index in each Directory helps usersmatch the characteristics of theirmanuscript to the topics emphasized by aparticular journal. Comprehensiveinformation includes topic areas, style andformat, detailed information about thejournal's review process, acceptance rateand much, much more.

The Library's subscription includesdirectories for business (Accounting,Economics and Finance, Managementand Marketing), education (EducationalCurriculum and Methods, EducationalPsychology and Administration,Educational Technology and LibraryScience), psychology and psychiatry,computer science, health administrationand nursing.

E-textbooks & DrakeAs we all know, the prices of "traditional"textbooks are both high, and gettinghigher. Cowles Library is now in a positionto offer Drake University instructors anumber of options and resources in thisarea.

In brief, those options include (but are notlimited to!):

* Compiling "reading lists" fromCowles Library's resources

* Using an online book source, suchas Springer eBooks

* Using online, peer-reviewedbooks as textbooks, such as thoseoffered at the University ofMinnesota.

Under the leadership of Professor BruceGilbert, the Library maintains a detailedResearch Guide on Texbook Alternatives atDrake (researchguides.drake.edu/textbooks]. Professor Gilbert, Koch andShenoy are scheduled to present the topicat the upcoming Learning Symposium.

An important new service for Drake students launched mid-way through the springsemester. A new Speaking Center and complementary Speaking Studio opened inMarch 2014. Resulting from a collaboration among Dr. Joan McAlister, Cowles Libraryand Drake Technology Services, the Speaking Center provides peer based tutoringservices for students.

Speaking Center tutors are students with experience and training in speech pedagogy.They are available to assist students with topic selection, organization, outlining, creatingvisual aids and practicing deliverey.

The services of the Speaking Center are complemented by the new Speaking Studio. TheStudio allows users to practice and record presentations either individually or in smallgroups.

The Speaking Center also offers assistance to Drake faculty and staff who are preparingprofessional presentations and speeches, who want to include a speech component inthe course, or who just want to hone their skills with Dr. Joan McAlister.

Library Engagement with FYS - Fall 2013Fourty of the 47 FYS sections had scheduled some sort of library session by Fall Break of2013. These sessions ranged from a partial class period to several class periodsdepending on the needs of FYS faculty.

Of those 40 sections, 14 were scheduled for more than one session. That number issignificant: nearly 30 percent of FYS sections will have contact with a librarian more thanonce this semester. Ten sections of those were committed members of the FYSInformation Literacy project in its fourth year for Fall 2013.

Community

Construction of a new 5,900 sq. ft.University Archives and Special Collectionsspace in Cowles Library was completed inmid-September. The area includes 1,500sq. ft. of office and work space and 4,400sq. ft. of climate controlled collectionsspace. In addition to the rapidly growingUniversity Archives, a number of politicalcollections – including the papers ofSenator Tom Harkin – will be housed in thespace. In a final configuration, the spacecould hold nearly 16 million documents or120,000 bound volumes.

In addition to housing collections, digitizingprint materials for online access is a majorprogram component at Cowles Library. Inthe past, we’ve digitized Drake yearbooks,student newspapers and a variety ofmaterials relating to the history andtraditions of Drake University.

Extensive digitization of the new politicalcollections, including the Harkin papers, isanticipated. Drake University is dedicatedto making these documents of local andnational significance more accessible tothe community.

University Records Project Gears Up

While the new Political Papers collectionsreceive considerable attention, the“University Archives” portion of the unit is avital component of the operation, focusedon capturing and preserving the recordsand history of Drake University.

The mission of the University Records unit,under the administration of the UniversityArchives, is to manage all college,department, or office non-current recordsof the University by providing supportthrough establishing a program thatcomplies with the creation, access,retrieval, storage, security and disposal ofinformation in an effective manner.

The University Records unit accomplishesthis mission by:

* Centralizing the storage of allUniversity non-current records

* Ensuring that non-currentUniversity records are stored inaccordance with Best Practices andguidelines

* Disposing of non-current recordsin accordance with guidelinesestablished by Drake University

* Establishing an effective filingsystem and retention schedule thatensures non-current records aretransferred, stored, and retrieved inan effective and efficient manner

* Providing for the safety of storedrecords, in any media.

Iowa Bibliography ProjectA grant funded project, hosted by CowlesLibrary, IOWA BIB can be accessed athttps://library.drake.edu/iowa-history-and-culture/.

The bibliography is organized into subjectareas, searchable by author, title andkeyword, and contains books, periodicalarticles, and specialized materials.Included are local history magazines,house organs, dissertations, theses, andtown, centennial, church, and businesshistories. The broad subject areas allow forbrowsing as well as content-specific searchcapabilities.

This online bibliography, IOWA BIB, will bepremiered at the Iowa Library Association2014 Annual Conference on October 22-23in Cedar Rapids.

The project will greatly enhance Iowastudies research by simplifying searchstrategies, supporting K-12 curriculathroughout Iowa, as well as business,community and academic research.

Political Papers CollectionNews

Neal Smith Papers Move to Cowles Library

Congressman Neal Smith was in Congressfrom 1959-1994. His papers, consisting of 13five-drawer legal-sized file cabinets andformerly housed in the Law Library, are nowpart of the growing Political Paperscollections at Cowles Library.

Representative Smith served Iowa as acongressman from 1959-1994. Documentsin the archives detail legislation thatRepresentative Smith had a major hand induring his time in Congress, such as theSaylorville and Red Rock Lakes flood-control projects and the stricter meatinspection legislation. There are also anumber of documents relating to Vietnamand Watergate, as well as speeches andnews releases put out by RepresentativeSmith's office. Representative Neal Smithreceived his law degree from DrakeUniversity in 1950.

Technology

Reading Lists in BlackboardCowles Library made a new type of coursecontent available to Blackboard coursepages for Drake Instructors. Cowles LibraryReading Lists allow faculty to add full-textarticle and e-book content to a ReadingList within Blackboard directly fromSuperSearch results. In addition, any URLcan be turned into a Reading List item.Faculty have the option of annotatingReading List items and controlling the orderof their display.

In addition to giving faculty the ability topost full-text Library resources alongsidetheir other course content, Reading Listsobviate the need to copy and pastepotentially unstable links from oneinterface to another. And becauseeverything takes place within Blackboard,off-campus students accessing theirBlackboard courses will be able to accessthe Library resources.

Responsive Website BuildA new version of the Library web site wasquietly released, featuring a modernresponsive design. The changes broughtthe site up to date with currenttechnologies.

In addition to a huge number of under-the-hood changes to fix bugs and improveperformance, the site now incorporatesmany new features from the latest webstandard, HTML5. The biggest change,however, is how the site is displayed ondifferent size screens. Responsive Designrefers to how the site “responds” todifferent screen sizes.You can see this foryourself : change the width of your browserwindow while https://library.drake.edu/ isopen and watch what happens.

At first the elements on the page just scaleto fit the screen width. Then things that nolonger fit, such as menus, are modifiedand/or hidden until a button is clicked/tapped. Eventually the page elementsstack on top of each other and their widthis expanded to fit the width of the screen.

These changes cause the site to retain itsbasic look, layout, and functionalityregardless of screen size.

The integrated library management system(ILS) is central to the Drake libraries' abilityto provide access and discovery ofinstructional and research informationresources. With the existing ILS agreementexpiring in 2016, Drake libraries areevaluating both the current ILS and thepotential for migration to an alternativesystem. In February 2014, the DrakeLibraries created an ILS Evaluation TaskForce charged with four primary tasks:

* evaluating the needs of the usercommunity, and the workflowrequirements of the libraries;

* assessing the current state of theILS market place;

* developing a Request forProposal (RFP) to be distributed tocandidate vendors;

* assess the candidate LibraryManagement Services in the contextof RFP requirements and submit arecommendation to Cowles Libraryand Law Library administration.

The Task Force began meeting in February2014 and established two parallel priorities:gathering existing policies and proceduresfrom both libraries, and creating a RequestFor Information (RFI) to be distributed to 8ILS vendors.

Within the RFI, the Task Force identified aset of strategic goals to be met by thetransition to a new ILS:

1. Improve efficiency. Reduce boththe number of steps required toprocess and circulate items and thetime required to do so.

2. Less compartmentalization ofactivities. Faster (more streamlined)purchase-to-access.

3. Flexibility and customization, notonly of the public display, but of thestaff-side features and options.

4. Integration — through openstandards— with other productslibraries use (e.g., discovery,ibGuides, SMS, social media).

5. Facilitate collaboration with otherlibraries (at all levels, local to global),regardless of whether those librariesare customers of the Respondent.

Seven vendors met the April 23rd RFIresponse deadline, and the Task Forceworked to narrow the candidate pool tothree: WorldShare Management Service,from OCLC; Alma, from Ex Libris; and Koha,hosted and supported by ByWaterSolutions.

The Task Force will submit its findings andrecommendations to Library administrationby October 31, 2014.
