TSRA Report

By Texas Ghost

(a.k.a. Tray Golden) TSRA / CAS Director

Hello fellow TSRA Members and friends! Help us celebrate the 100th Anniversary of TSRA at the TEXAS HISTORICAL SHOOTING SOCIETY out of Columbus, Texas. THSS is hosting the 2019 TSRA/CAS/WB Texas State Championship Match May 17-19, 2019, to be held at GUNSMOKE on the Brune Ranch. An application is attached. AND ATTENTION…if you are a Top Over All winner at one of our regional fundraisers, you get a FREE ENTRY. This year’s winners are: from TRR-GW Ketchum and Angels; from the Caballeros-Whiskey Kid and Panhandle Cowgirl; and from the Ten Horns-Pinewood Kid and Sopapilla Su. Note: Winners must submit an application with additional fees (lunches, Wild Bunch match, membership, etc) AND…IF YOU ARE A TOP OVER ALL COWBOY ACTION WINNER at the TSRA Texas State Championship Match, you will be honored at the 2020TSRA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING with dinner and a very

nice trophy! This year’s winners are: STIL SMOKN’ and DIAMOND KATE. At the sold out Banquet /Awards Dinner March 2, 2019, at the Sheraton Austin Hotel, Georgetown, TX., with Colonel Oliver North as keynote speaker, I presented the TOA trophies to STIL SMOKN’ and DIAMOND KATE. Remember, to shoot the TSRA / CAS / WB Texas State Championship match you must be a TSRA member in good standing. Why join the TSRA? WE are one of the best lines of defense protecting your 2nd Amendment Right. You can be sure that the Gun Control crowd is not sleeping. We are witnessing, first hand, the results of Socialism/Communism in Venezuela. The sad fact is that one socialistic regime is trying to over throw and exiting socialistic regime. As reported on FOX NEWS, 3/4/2019, President-elect, Juan Guaido said, ”We cannot allow the use of armed civilians, we cannot allow them (the existing army of Maduro) to massacre our people.” I submit to you this truth for being a FREE PEOPLE, it is not always who has the biggest gun, but who has the most guns. Thanks for supporting TSRA and CAS. To join or renew your membership, go to TSRA.com

February made me shiver with each..... (line from American Pie: Editor) Wrong song... it shoulda been Blowin in the Wind! Texas weather came thru again. A very nice day that got a little breezy in the afternoon made for a great day of fun and competition. A good turnout today with 11 shooters including his editorship Willie Earp using a nice Kimber in modern class. Willie is always a pleasure to shoot with. We started at the trail stage located on the trail between the fort and Brazos Point. With 2 banks of 7 reactive targets and 3 autosets the fun began! Triple F stepped up and poured the heat them! Fast moving 35 rounds this was a real crowd pleaser. Dead man’s gun was used by 3 or 4 competitors with great success. That success being getting to use various vintage outcast pistols in competition. HooDoo Brown produced his new to him 1905 savage pocket pistol in the mighty 32acp powerhouse “like a brick thru a plate glass window” so says the James Bond movies.....speaking of James,4 aces returned to the shooting circle full of vim and vigor, ready for action! Grif said he didn’t drink enough of his vim and vigor or maybe not enough caffeine. Moving to Brazos Point a General gunfight broke out with Doughboy shooters taking on 5 distant targets pcc shooting 7 and everybody shooting 28 pistol and 4 shotgun to finish this stage. Greased Lightnin liked this stage so much he shot it twice. Actually the T.O. Interference resulted in a reshoot but he was sure having fun! Double Ott who wins the long distance award being from Nebraska on the Wyoming border thought that the wind was

Page 4: COWBOY ACTION NEWS - COMANCHE VALLEY 2019 C A News1.pdf · 2019. 4. 23. · General gunfight broke out with Doughboy shooters taking on 5 distant targets pcc shooting 7 and everybody

calm. Great feller to shoot with uses a colt built in 1915 and a krag in 30-40. He shot doughboy and stayed and shot BAMM. Stepping over to the pecan tree a clever and fun stage was had by double tapping 10 targets plus 1 bell then last mag was 4 on the snuff can plate rack 3 on the bells and rifles finishing up the stage at there respective targets. Neat stage was had just by thinking outside the box for normal sequence and strings. Watauga Kid liked this stage and shot it well. Back to Brazos with Capt. Bruce Jarrett yelling “I’m ready! ”Drawing his 45 and blazing away at those bad guy targets with 28 rounds. Billy Bob shot this stage well and used his dead man’s gun a browning Hipower along with his 1911. Lunch was had and it was a crowd pleaser, king ranch chicken. Thanks Sid! (That’s a favorite!) BAMM and GAMM was started after that great lunch. Watauga kid left while his knees were playing nice and the rest became involved with BAMM. Griff and 4 aces needed to get home so we put them up first. Griff bought a new to him 03a3 that’s a dang clean rifle with a mint bore set down and promptly went to cleaning the sniper targets. 4 aces beat him with that rifle but it was close. We also ran double-ought thru because he was needing to hit the trail. Greased Lightnin jumped out fast and clean. Really good shooting. Bruce Jarrett is fast but a misfire stumped him. Combat match was 10 shots and HooDoo came alive shooting his 1903 Springfield. Billy Bob likes the combat match better because of the movement involved. Triple f is going to have to change his name to triple threat if he just keeps getting better. Four GAMM shooters this month featuring loading on the clock and a reload on the clock brought smiles to the shooters and no Garand thumbs to be found.

PoP guns?! What the heck? What is that? (Po)cket (P)istols a side match featuring the iconic vintage automatic pistols of yesteryear. Perfect examples include the colt 1903 hammerless or the 1905 savage. This will be a featured side match at Wild Bunch on the Brazos the Texas state championship and we will have a side match after BAMM in March. POCKET PISTOL (PoP) RULES AND GUIDELINES Legal PoP guns are of the type of pistol manufactured 1945 or earlier. This not the date of manufacture of a particular pistol but the original version date, there for a Walther PP could of been manufactured in 1939 or 1979 and be legal for PoP. There are many pistols that are legal for this side match but the perfect example would be the 1903 Colt hammerless. An early manufactured pistol that falls perfectly into the correct time frame, accurate and reliable. All legal pistols must be centerfire. Please note a few examples below and note this is not all inclusive. Colt 1903 and 1908 hammerless, Colt vest pocket 25 Walther pp,ppk, Walther vest pocket 25, Saur 32, Ruby 32, 1900 FN Browning, 1907 savage 32/380, Remington hammerless, Ortgies 32, Beretta 1935, Mauser 1910, MAB 32,25, Llama mini 1911 in 32/380, Dreyse 1907 32, Frommer stop 1910, Sauer 38H, Mauser HSC. Caliber not greater than 380 Centerfire only 25, 32, 380 Ww2 design cut off date Lead bullets only Pistols may not be externally modified except aftermarket non target grips are allowed along with plating, blueing or engraving as cosmetic enhancements. PROCEDURES Magazines may be loaded anytime prior to shooting time. Magazine remains out of pistol until load and make ready call given by T.O. Starting position is empty chamber magazine inserted. Scenario may call for pistol laying on table or in hand. Stage finish under T.O. Direction remove magazine hold open slide if no slide stop to show clear, lower slide dry fire pistol. Pistol is now safe and may be safely carried to storage area. Typical stage: 6 or 7 shot Nevada sweep on 3 targets distance 5 to 9 yards 6 or 7 shot with double tap on 3 targets 1 on center. New shooters are always welcome! Read the rules and don’t worry about all the right gear. We have an open class waiting for you. ROUNDUP is in July and looks to be a lot of fun. First time ever that a true wild bunch match and a true cowboy match are held together at a annual match. To add to the excitement this will be the first doughboy category held at a annual match. Oil up that 03 Springfield and get ready to rock! TEXAS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Oct. 18, 19 and 20. Features 10 great stages and a bunch of great and unique side matches. Make plans now! I’m Dusty Boddams and that’s the Boddam line!

Remembering the Alamo, San Jacinto, and Westward Expansion

By German Jack Fordern

SASS #101556 People came to Texas from all over the USA and all The Earth. Why? They had nowhere else to go. The fact of the matter is that our greatest Texas heroes were ejected from their previous lives for various reasons. The newly opened colonization of Texas was great place to reset. The Mexican Constitution of 1830 was actually not that bad. Santa Anna tossed it out though. So many of the Texas settlers had come through the US, with its Constitution not too much different than it is today. So they finally had to fight for their rights beginning in 1835. The Alamo was actually defended twice during The Texas Revolution. They won the Battle of Bexar in December of 1835. The famous 13 Days to Glory in 1836 was a Pyrrhic victory for Santa Anna though. Sam Houston was allowed to stage a battle that he favored at San Jacinto. The result was that Texas gained independence. Santa Anna returned to Mexico in shame, vowing to take up arms against Texas again if the new Republic ever joined the USA [and he was allowed to return to power].

According to sources at A&M and The Alamo, pistols were not readily available on the frontier. They were carried by some people and undoubtedly a number made their way to the Alamo. Though fewer in number than long arms, other weapons were also used at the Alamo. They used Kentucky pistols, British horse pistols, and Harper’s Ferry pistols. These pistols could have been rifled or smoothbore with brass or steel barrels. There were probably many Spanish Pistola's that would have been of the type that featured the Miguelet lock. Most of the weapons used by the men who died in the final defense of the Alamo had been seized from Mexican loyalists during the aforementioned Battle of Bexar. Amazingly enough, Santa Anna had returned to power by the time Texas became the 28th state. The result was The Mexican War, which was won almost entirely as a result of the efforts of The Texas Rangers. Texas became part of the USA as a result of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. After The Mexican War, there was also something called the Gadsden Purchase. According to the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the American government purchased nearly one million square miles of territory ceded by Mexico for the astonishingly low sum of $15,000,000. This land would become the states and territories eventually comprising all the future land area of the states of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Nevada. In addition, parts of modern states Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming were also acquired as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Gadsden Purchase. __________________________ Author Johnny Baker Jr. is German Jack Fordern. His historical novel,

Burnt Alive in Gumption Junction, is for sale on Amazon in Kindle and paperback, and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Musuem at Ft. Fisher in Waco, TX. He is currently writing a sequel.
