As hurricane season gets underway pet and livestock owners are urged toreview their disaster plans and prepare accordingly The American VeterinaryMedical Association has provided the following resources

REPORT RECEIPT OF ANY UNSOLICITED PACKAGES OF SEEDS
The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) and The ConnecticutAgricultural Experiment Station (CAES) were notified that Connecticut residentsreceived unsolicited packages containing seeds that appear to have originated fromChina The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time and may beinvasive plant species The packages were sent by mail and may have Chinesewriting on them Unsolicited packages of seeds have been received by residents inevery state throughout the country over the past week ldquoPlanting seeds of unknown origin has the potential to introduce invasive diseasespests or bacteria posing a threat to our food supplyrdquo says Agriculture CommissionerBryan P Hurlburt ldquoWe are committed to working with state and federal partners tosafeguard agriculture through the regulation of seed importationrdquoPlease do not plant these seeds Anyone who receives an unsolicited package ofseeds from China should immediately contact their state plant regulatory officials DrKirby Stafford at 203-974-8485 (KirbyStaffordctgov) or Dr Victoria Smith at 203-

EXTENSION TEAM AIMS TO INCREASE FARM SALES IN NORTHEAST CT
Connecticutrsquos Northeast is well known for its rural character A part of The LastGreen Valley National Heritage Corridor these towns feature picturesquelandscapes marked by their agricultural roots While these scenic farmlands arehistorical they also continue to be active growing and selling a variety ofproducts However too often local consumers pass right by the regionrsquos manyfarms and farmersrsquo markets without stopping to enjoy the fresh products theseagricultural treasures offerExtension Educator Jiff Martin received $500000 in funding from the USDA todeliver community presentations organize outreach activities conduct marketresearch and launch new marketing tools and trainings to improve consumerawareness and increase product sales across twenty-three towns in Windhamand Tolland CountiesThe three-year project in Northeastern Connecticut targets over ninety foodproducers The project aims to raise direct sales from farmers to consumers by15 percent and grow the customer base by 20 percent substantially increasingthe consumption of locally grown food Based on research conducted by aprofessional marketing firm earlier this year the project seeks to leveragevalues that residents in the region share such as community relationshipsfreshness and flavorThe UConn Extension team is working with numerous collaborators including

As hurricane season gets underway pet and livestock owners are urged toreview their disaster plans and prepare accordingly The American VeterinaryMedical Association has provided the following resources

REPORT RECEIPT OF ANY UNSOLICITED PACKAGES OF SEEDS
The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) and The ConnecticutAgricultural Experiment Station (CAES) were notified that Connecticut residentsreceived unsolicited packages containing seeds that appear to have originated fromChina The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time and may beinvasive plant species The packages were sent by mail and may have Chinesewriting on them Unsolicited packages of seeds have been received by residents inevery state throughout the country over the past week ldquoPlanting seeds of unknown origin has the potential to introduce invasive diseasespests or bacteria posing a threat to our food supplyrdquo says Agriculture CommissionerBryan P Hurlburt ldquoWe are committed to working with state and federal partners tosafeguard agriculture through the regulation of seed importationrdquoPlease do not plant these seeds Anyone who receives an unsolicited package ofseeds from China should immediately contact their state plant regulatory officials DrKirby Stafford at 203-974-8485 (KirbyStaffordctgov) or Dr Victoria Smith at 203-
