Star-Studded, Spectacular, and SeventyImua Family Services 70th Anniversary Platinum Jubilee
Since 1947, the organization has been tirelesslydedicated to fulfilling its own promise andpurpose: “to empower children and their familiesto reach their full potential.” For seventy years,
Imua Family Services has done just that. On April 8th, AdrienneWarren will take the
stage in the HyattRegency Ballroom
to dazzle,delight, and
helphundreds ofluckyguestscelebrateImua’slegacyand
potential at its 70th Anniversary Platinum Jubilee. “I’m delighted to be performing,” Warren said, “Imua
eases the minds and hearts of families and helps childrenin the early development stages. Their mission is veryimportant to me.”
She’s also excited about the prospect of spendingsome vacation time on Maui. This will be her third visit tothe island, of which she’s “a big fan.”
She’s more than earned a little time off. Ms. Warren’smost recent role, as Gertrude Saunders/Florence Mills inBroadway’s groundbreaking hit Shuffle Along, which earnedher a “Best Featured Actress in a Musical” Tony nomination, rounds out the actress’ expansive, and diverse, repertoire.By the time George C. Wolfe—a “big old deal in thetheatrical world,” according to The New York Times andpretty much everyone else—approached Warren about his(then top secret) new project, she had already been on tourwith progressive rock mega-band The Trans-SiberianRailroad, played Lorell Robinson in the touring cast ofDreamgirls, cut her Broadway teeth as Danielle in Bring itOn, and impacted binge-watchers as a salty-mouthedteenage delinquent in Orange is the New Black.
That’s what showbiz folks call “range.” It’s almost enough to make you want to hate her, but
no. Adrienne Warren is warm, kind and completelygrateful for the opportunities she’s been given.
“When George (C. Wolfe) asked me to auditionfor him , he didn’t tell me what it was for,” she recalls,“then he offered me a role and I still didn’t even knowwhat it was going to become. He was completelysecretive about it. “
She didn’t hesitate for a second.Warren laughs when she discusses Wolfe’s
unorthodox, highly “iterative” directing style, and recallshow long the cast rehearsed before he would finally revealwhat the musical was actually about.
“I just thought ‘what he is working on, it’s gonna bemagnificent…whatever it is.’”
What they were working on was Shuffle Along, or theMaking of the Musical Sensation of 1921, and All ThatFollowed.
It was magnificent, and it transformed AdrienneWarren straight into a bona fide Broadway star.
Adrienne Warren’s impressive talent, diverserepertoire and artistic range (not to mention thatTony nomination) have granted her the gift of time
and choice, luxuries rarely gifted to any performer, especially one who has yet to celebrate her
thirtieth birthdayFor the last year or so, she’s been waiting
for a very “specific, chosen opportunity” toshuffle along.

That “specific, chosen”opportunity mayhave showed up onAdrienne Warren’sdoorstep dressed in hot pants and go go boots.
There’s serious buzz about Warren being cast as theTina Tuner in an upcoming “bio-musical” based on therock icon’s tumultuous life. She recently returned from atrip to London where she met with Ms. Turner andworkshopped the project. TINA The Musical will hitLondon’s West End in 2018, and it could very well be thehottest ticket since Hamilton.
The hottest ticket on Maui this spring is the Imua 70thAnniversary Platinum Jubilee. It’s always “the most talkedabout event of the year,” but this year’s is the most star-studded,all-out-glam,black tie galayet. WithAdrienneWarrenheadlining the main event, and Eric Gilliom Band rockingthe Platinum After Party, and, of course, the traditionalcocktail hour “red carpet walk,” every guest will feel like anaward-winning superstar.
“It’s amazing to think that we started in 1947 to servechildren with polio, in a tiny facility behind KaunoaSenior Center,” Imua Executive Dean Wong said, “andseventy years later, we have a major facility in CentralMaui, a Childhood Development Center on Molokai, and we’ve just opened our West Maui Family Center.”
The organization may have expanded its reach over itsseventy years, but it has held fast to its mission, andgrown into a model for non-profits throughout Hawaiiand the U.S.
“Imua’s growth, magnitude and longevity is a directreflection of this annual gala event,” Wong said, “It’s rareto attend a fundraiser and be able to see such tangible, ongoing evidence of your support.”
