Hypertension is a serious healthissue that affects a great deal ofAmericans. Treatment should bepursued aggressively and thedesired blood pressure is as lowas you can tolerate without feelingill. As with any other medicalproblem compliance with life stylemodifications and medications isthe cornerstone of a successfultreatment. The lack of persistencyin taking blood pressuremedications bring along the riskof rebound hypertension andsometimes tachycardia (increase

Racquel Rodriguez, M.D.

DOC TALKHYPERTENSION

Hypertension is one of the mostcommon cause of morbidity andmortality in US with an estimated50 million people affected (about20% of the adult population and60% of persons over age 65).

Hypertension is classifieddepending on the blood pressurelevel and goes from optimal (lessthan 120/80) to stage 3 (more orequal to 180/110). It can be alsoclassified depending on the cause.Essential hypertension, the mostcommon type, represents 90% ofcases and secondary hypertensionthat includes renal, adrenal, thyroid disease as well asmedications, alcohol and illegalsubstance among other things.

Contrary to previous beliefs thathypertension should be treatedmore aggressively in youngpeople and that systolic bloodpressure (top number) is not asimportant as diastolic (bottomnumber) now we know that

systolic blood pressure is moredirectly related withcardiovascular complications andthat aggressive blood pressuremanagement even on the veryelderly patient decreases the riskfor stroke, congestive heart failureand heart attacks. The screeningfor hypertension should start at 25years old and blood pressureshould be checked every 2 yearsif normal and at the discretion ofthe doctor if abnormal.

Treatment of hypertension isdetermined by the severity of thedisease and by the presence ofother cardiovascular risk factors. It will always include life stylemodifications such as weight loss, exercise, smoking cessation andlow salt diet; drug therapy isinitiated once the life stylemodifications have failed to bringblood pressure to target levels.Diuretics “water pills” and betablockers are the fist choice oftreatment. For diabetics, aceinhibitors are the first choice,

We were then escorted to alarge holding cell that had 20double bunks with thin mats.None was vacant so a mat onthe floor was my stake for afew hours until a bunk becamevacant. It was impossible towalk a straight line as therewere so many of us on thefloor. When prisoners left, more came in.

One thin blanket served as acover and , wi th carefu lfolding, served as pillow too.You couldn’t do much with itor your bare feet would stickout—not a good thing when itis so damned cold. What I saw was an awful placefilled to the brim with guys ofall races, ages, and demeanors. Some guys were aggressive. Itwas loud, co ld , bar ren ,uncomfor table , and veryimpersonal.

No, it wasn’t one of the localgay bars; it was the inside ofthe Orange Country Jail. Nota kind word was spoken there.Guards barked orders!

Led to an empty cell with aphone, somehow I wassupposed to know it was forarranging bail. Those prisonerswho’d been through theroutine before knew that, butI didn’t. I quickly followedsuit and randomly picked a bailbondsman, d ia led , andexplained my situation. Allduly noted by him, I expectedto be out by the end of the day.It was my first t ime to becharged as a “real” criminal.( In November 2002 I wasar res ted as par t of anorganized protest against theSouthern Baptist Conventionby the gay organization calledSoulforce, but all of the detailsin ge t t ing re leased wereprearranged by a Soulforce

I was finally released very latethat day. My original call tothe bondsman was somehow“lost in the shuffle,” whichresulted in my being in jail for38 hours instead of the usual12 or so. My crime? I wascharged with DUI. The trialcomes up on July 22. So farit’s cost me over $1,600.

Well, Titusville, you’ve now got a second GLBT business, Show Time Deli, indowntown Titusville where the old Steamers used to be. There’s delicious wraps, and wine and beer, even an outdoor patio. Stop in and say hi to Gwen andKristie – there’s even rumors of live music on Saturday nights! We’ll have apersonal report soon. If things keep growing up that way, nightlife will springup too. What a wonderful development!

Speaking of wonders, it seems a second GLBT church is opening in Cocoa, headed by Rev. Peter. It is a truly incredible how our community is growing. Two businesses in Titusville, two churches in Cocoa and, I predict, soon morebars and openly GLBT businesses. Our time is coming and we will build in therecognition as valid people admitted by the Supreme Court a few weeks ago.Next year is an election year and it may well be a turning point – depending onwho bothers to register and vote. We know the fundamentalists will.

And where there’s a will there’s a way. Maxine proved her will and got her way, winning the Miss Firecracker contest at The Drama Club, July 3rd. It was agreat party and proved to be the way to kick off the holiday weekend. Now TheDrama Club is looking forward to their second annual Luau, this year it’s alsothe celebration of Rita’s birthday! We know it will be a very special weekend.

There are a couple of special weekends coming up inMelbourne, too. First up is this Sunday’s benefit at theCold Keg for Hug-A-Butt, a man who served up a goodtime for a lot of people, needs our help. There will be aplethora of performers, food, and special surprises. Bethere and bring your wallet. It’s a chance to show howour community cares for one-another.

Next up will be the August 9 benefit for Project Response at the Imperial’sHotel and Conference Center. It’s an important cause, and well worth supporting. The $75 ticket is well worth it too: with dinner and entertainment by Joe Davisof The Drifters (you remember: Charlie Brown, This Magic Moment, Up on

I don’t know if you are like me, but Ido not enjoy being stuck in traffic. There was a time in my life when Iwould become quite upset wheneverI found myself behind a long line ofvehicles that were not goinganywhere. But one day I discovereda simple solution to my anger attraffic: simply hum.

It is difficult to stay angry when oneis humming. Perhaps singing a songis a natural way to prevent emotionaloverload and stress.

Many studies have shown that theheart rate, respiration, and brainwaves actually slow down, musclesrelax, and stress-related hormonesdiminish while concentrating on asimple tone or image. Singing andhumming can help drive awaynegative thoughts and fears.

History relates how Joan of Arcwould hum to herself while she wasin prison. Several years ago, a littlegirl named Jessica was trapped in awell in Texas. While her rescuersstruggled to reach her, they heard herhumming.

There are many events that come ourway that we can’t do anything about. On a recent plane trip, we missedour connecting flight due to badweather. In fact, most of the peoplein the airport seemed to have missedtheir flights. The fact that it was nowmidnight did not help matters.People were tired and grumpy. Somewere very irate.

There was nothing that anyone coulddo until the next day. The customerservice agent was doing her best toaccommodate everyone. After all,it wasn’t her fault. But so many

people were cursing and stating thatthey would never fly her airline again.I was reminded of the phrase in theSerenity Prayer – “help me to acceptthe things I cannot change.”

So I started to sing to myself. Wewere calm. We realized we had nocontrol over the situation. No matterwhat we might try, we could notchange it. As we accepted thesituation, what was a nightmare forothers become a pleasant experiencefor us. We would get to do somethingwe had never done before.

Maybe when things aren’t going sowell in life, we should try humminginstead of complaining. The Psalmistoften wrote about having a song inthe heart, even in difficult times.Perhaps this is what Jesus meantwhen he said, “the water I givebecomes a perpetual spring withinyou.”

PFLAG Vero Beach is electing new officers next weekand launching it’s own charity: a scholarship fund.Details are sketchy, but the intent is to bring at leastthe Indian River County school system into the 21st

century through financial influence. The principalscan’t insist there are no GLBT students when they start applying for scholarships.I can hardly wait to hear the fools choke when they have to announce the winner(s)at graduation. Whatta ya bet they take the coward’s way out and stop announcingall scholarship winners so they don’t have to say the dreaded G and L words.Looks like good things are happening all down the coast. The first fund raiser isalready booked: Employee Turnabout night at Club Bλλλλλird Cage in August.

Speaking of the Club Bλλλλλird Cage, Kelli Randell has a full summer planned.First, of course, is the monthly customer appreciation party on Sunday, July 27.Then on Wednesday, July 30, Sum Poosie and Princess kicks off a whole newWednesday with entertainers, a DJ and free giveaways with drink specials. Soturn up and get yourself sum poosie!

Guess who turned up at VIP’s over the Fourth weekend? Todd & Frank were intown celebrating their 9th anniversary. While hangingout Todd agreed to come back the last weekend in Augustto bartend on the 29th and Tasha will perform on the30th. It looks like August will be full of events! July atVIP’s is full of entertainment, too. With the TuesdayHip-Hop nights taking off and even with a DJ onThursdays, they will run the new Bravo 10 pm show,Queer Eyes for Straight Guys with closed captioning.Starting on Tuesday the 22nd, they’ll be showing BoyMeets Boy, at 9 pm with sound. Reality TV with a twist:gay dating meets To Tell the Truth. And we all know about those straight boyswho date gay guys! Should be a hoot!
