O nce upon a time, farmers needed only a strong back, big hands and a sharp pair of eyes in order to be successful.
Those attributes are still important, of course, because farming is hard work. But today’s agriculturalists need something more than youth and
strength if they want to prosper and that something is the latest technology. One of those technologies is GPS (global positioning systems), which positions and
guides such agricultural equipment as seeders, spreaders and combines. GPS makes farm-ers more effi cient by eliminating human error.
Hemisphere GPS of Calgary (www.hemispheregps.com) develops GPS and compli-mentary products for positioning, guidance and machine control in a variety of applica-tions. In addition to agriculture, they include aerial material application, marine naviga-tion, land surveying and mapping, construction machine guidance and control.

Dassault digs deep into hydraulic cylinder endurance
The new Canadian headquarters of Phoenix Contact is equipped to offer training, proof of concept testing and a exhibition area.
The Lola-Drayson B12/69EV electric racer, with its four “pancake” asynchronous electric motors provides a combined peak output of 850 hp.
Boosted brake circuits, like those shown above, and electrohydraulic brakes, have a strong mechanical pedigree, according to brake specialist MICO.
Overloading and falling debris are common stress-inducing conditions that impact hydraulic cylinders on the jobsite. FEA software finds faults early.

Improvements to supply chain on the way
W hen U.S. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced an
Action Plan last December to accelerate commerce between the nations, industry applauded but nagging doubts that the bureaucracy could deliver remained.
Certainly a constant concern for automotive manufacturers in Ontario is the challenge of parts flow over the Canada/U.S. border – a serious trading bottleneck for productivity. However, with the new Action Plan, some of the border stress we currently experience could be alleviated as early as this summer. According to Mathew Wilson, VP of National Policy for Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), the PM and the President agreed to a very tight timeline on many of the changes outlined in the Action Plan.
“You’re talking about a two or 2.5-year process to implement a lot of what is outlined – not a lot of time,” said Wilson.
He noted that alleviation of bottlenecks at the border will start to be addressed as early as June. There are pilot projects related to eliminating some of the transactional reporting on food shipments that will take effect in June.
“That is really big in Southern Ontario because the second largest volume of traffic across the border there, after automotive, is food – and there isn’t a huge gap be-tween the two either,” says Wilson. “If they can speed up
those border crossings and simpli-fy that process – and they are very complex – that will speed up the automotive shipments as well.”
By late summer or early fall, there will be a realignment of some of the trusted trader programs also, explained Wilson.
Wilson and his colleagues at CME are pleased by this outcome because as much as 80% of the recom-mendations laid out by the Beyond Borders partnership were adopted.
“We spent a lot of time on that program for good reason. The costs of compliance are enormous for indus-try, and we knew the solutions existed within the current realm, that we could build on what is already there.
“The changes laid out could lead to a one per cent overall decline in the cost of transactions – $15 billion positive impact on industry in Canada and the U.S. Con-sidering automotive still accounts for 25% of our trade with the U.S., that is a huge benefit for the industry.”
Action Plan announced by Obama and Harper could reduce border bottlenecks by summer

CANDIAC, QC – Representatives from Clariant and Süd-Chemie, as well as Canadian and Québec government offi cials, recently cel-ebrated the offi cial opening of a new battery materials manufactur-ing plant at Phostech Lithium Inc, a Clariant group company. The plant produces carbon coated lithium iron phosphate (C-LiFePO4) a high per-formance energy storage material used in batteries for electric vehicle drives, stationary energy storage and other applications. The facility will create more than 50 new jobs.
To meet the sharply increasing worldwide demand for Life Power P2, Süd-Chemie – which acquired
Phostech Lithium in 2008 – invested $78 million in the Candiac facility, boosting global capacity by 2500 metric tons per year. The project re-ceived a $7.4 million grant for con-struction and equipment from the Québec Government through Inves-tissement Québec. Additional fund-ing included a $4.7 million grant from the Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), a $1 million loan from Economic Devel-opment Agency of Canada for the Regions of Québec (CED) and CAD $250,000 from Emploi-Quebéc for worker training.
“Life Power P2 is a good exam-ple of Clariant’s focus on sustainabil-
ity and is an important part of our corporate environmental protection and safety strategy,” said Dr. Klaus Brandt, head of Süd-Chemie’s Bat-tery Materials business line. “Life Power P2 is a ... material that not only promotes broader adoption of alternative energy technologies – from electric vehicles to stationary energy storage systems in combina-tion with renewable energy genera-tion – but also is inherently safe for the environment because it avoids hazardous substances and tem-perature runaway.” The facility has energy-effi cient equipment and the latest emission control and Quebec compliant effl uent recycling systems.

Could Canada end up being a helpless branch plant country?Foreign owners emboldened by impotent Harper Government
By Ajay BajajAdvisory Board Directions
C anada is becoming increas-ingly helpless in controlling its resources and industry.
And it is about time our govern-ment, business leaders, labor unions, politicians, and all Canadians woke up and started working together, otherwise we will have no control of our future or resources.
Recent closing of the London, ON, Electromotive plant by parent company Caterpillar demonstrates how much Canada is vulnerable to the branch plant syndrome. We just witnessed the “shock and awe” of corporate greed. In their best year ever, CAT made the Canadian work-ers an offer they could not accept.
You can almost sense the joy the bean counters felt in saving a few millions as they giggled their way to the bottom line. There are real children, workers and families that were affected by the loss of so many jobs. How much profit is enough?!
“Control your own destiny or
someone else will,” said Jack Welch, the now-retired CEO of GE.
All Canadians watched helpless-ly as U.S. Steel shut down Hamilton steel operations during last slow-down while still maintaining and consolidating its U.S. operations. Adding insult to injury they default-ed on the job guarantees offered before takeover. Try doing this in China, Brazil or Germany.
Don’t blame the U.S. compa-nies; they are doing what is good for them. No use crying in our Canadian beer.
The shutdown of Vale mining operations by its Brazilian owners during slow down brings the harsh reality home that we are helpless when decisions are made outside of the country.
Hundred-year-old Siemens (a former Westinghouse plant) moved to North Carolina. The overseas owners decided to move as they consolidated in a cheaper U.S.
jurisdiction and were offered over $100 million dollars in subsidies and incentives. When the Canadian operation had served its purpose it was time for them to move on.
I am a business owner and all for free trade that is equally fair and equitable for all. U.S. government has buy America and buy American initiatives and the steel on bridges and highway projects has to be 100% American.
Are NAFTA rules frequent-ly circumvented? The Canadian Government postures and pretends and beats its chest at home like a gorilla but appears inept at enforcing bilateral fairness in trade. They wag their fingers at Canadians but act like wet possums on the world stage.
Our labor unions are equally to blame for their share in this mess. They have failed to demonstrate genuine understanding and aware-ness of a changing world order. Gone are days of mutual suspi-
cion and confrontational unionism as there are thousands all over the world waiting to gobble up our jobs.
It is time for all stakeholders in Canada, the government, labor, businesses, politicians and general public to realize no one cares for us and we have to work together to help ourselves.
There is no enemy within. The danger is from an outside, shrink-ing world – hungry and grateful for our jobs.
The saying by Jean Nidetch, the legendary founder of Weight Watchers, is so applicable.
It’s choice – not chance – that determines your destiny.”
The time to make those choices for Canada is now before it gets too late.

SCARBOROUGH, ON – Employee training is an important part of any business if it wants to serve its cus-tomers properly. On the technology side, it is also important to stay cur-rent, and that includes hardware and software such as programmable logic controllers.
This spring Omron Canada Inc. offered a seat to me in its in-class Basic PLC Programming course IA-TRN-OES110. Omron application specialist Matt Labadie provided step-by-step instruction, using the company’s program curriculum in-formed by his many years in the fi eld and in tech support.
The hands-on laboratory experi-ence at the company’s headquarters
made for an enjoyable, educational three days (a full schedule is at http://ow.ly/a9QcE). Part of the class stayed on to continue with the intermedi-ate course, making them all the more able to apply their PLC programming training as soon they returned to their
respective plants. One trainee, an industry veteran,
needed to learn the Omron PLC plat-form to satisfy a customer’s machine design requirement, while another trainee, an industry rookie, needed the training to get over the hump on design projects.
Covered in the course are basic wiring, Omron Cx-Programmer ba-sics (the hands-on platform), memory mapping, Omron C-series I/O ad-dressing allocations, programming and control strategies.
Omron will also pack up its train-ing lab and offer its PLC courses closer to the customer’s site. Another option is online customer e-learning for PLCs and other devices, as well as Omron University for online distribu-tor training.

CAMBRIDGE, ON – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) has announced that it will increase RAV4 pro-duction at its Woodstock, ON, assembly plant from 150,000 annual capacity to 200,000 ve-hicles in early 2013. Ultimately, this $80 million investment will result in about 400 new jobs between now and implemen-tation. This initiative is one of several projects announced in 2011 under the name, Project Green Light and supported by both the Government of Cana-da and Government of Ontario.

W ithin the hands of a skilled operator, an earthmover makes construction-site
work look easy. However, operator error, accidental shovel overloads and accidental impacts from falling debris are regular occurrences on a job site.
So Tenaris, a supplier of seamless tubes for earth-moving machinery manufacturers (including Caterpillar, Volvo, LT Komatsu and Dong Yang), devotes considerable R&D resources to anticipating such events. By study-ing the effects of a wide range of oper-ational and environmental stresses on a cylinder’s service life, Tenaris can fi ne-tune material design to best toler-ate such extremes and improve safety for thousands of machine operators.
“The failure mode and the limit load beyond which a tube rupture can occur are extremely important to identify,” said Mihaela Cristea, a researcher in the structural integ-rity department at the Tenaris R&D centre in Dalmine, Italy. “Our OEM customers are looking for high yield strength above all, so fracture tough-ness is the key parameter for ensur-ing integrity and safety.”
Tenaris has turned to Abaqus unifi ed fi nite element analysis (FEA), from Dassault Systèmes’ SIMULIA brand, for realistic simulation of its fracture toughness testing regime. They were already familiar with the power of FEA, notes Dalmine researcher Marco Spinelli, using it for stress distribution analysis in welded-joint applications and struc-tural analysis of complex compo-nents. “The suite of software applica-tions available with Abaqus is widely used for product design in our R&D center, mainly due to its pre- and post-processing advantages,” he said.
“We felt we had the tools in hand for deepening our inquiries into the performance of our new materials.”
Since they already had recorded a great deal of accurate real-world test data, the group was able to
create very precise FEA models of their cylinders using the materials defi nitions, geometries, crack dimen-sions, boundary conditions and burst pressures that were identifi ed during
their previous experiments. While the focus was on high-toughness materials, low toughness material models were also examined to evalu-ate the overall performance of the
software for predicting failure.

T here is current increasing trend in requests for brushless dc motors for high-speed applica-tions. For instance, new impeller technology
changes the way modern respirators are designed,
allowing them to be more compact and quieter. Such performance requires motors that rotate
up to 50-60,000 krpm, and are capable of deliver-ing high acceleration and deceleration in synchrony with a patients breathing pattern. Other examples include surgical and dental hand tools that have
to be even stronger and smaller. One way to achieve this is to use high-speed brush-less motors that can deliver the necessary power and performance, within the reduced footprint.
Mechanical power is the product of torque and speed. To increase power, we can either increase torque or increase speed. Generally, for a given technology, the con-tinuous torque is related to the motor size. The continuous torque is often limited by thermal considerations.
Without considering high-speed con-straints, a motor designer will try to opti-mize the torque that the motor can dissipate for a given power dissipated by joule effect. The figure of merits R/K2 is a good factor to characterize a motor (where R is winding resistance and K is the voltage induced on the rotor divided by its angular velocity). A good motor should have a small resistance and a high torque constant.
One way to increase the torque constant, is to use stronger magnets, such as NdFe.
In order to decrease the joule losses, the objective is to have a wire section as large as possible, hence the lowest copper resis-tance. After optimization of R/K2, maximum torque is still limited for a given motor size by its thermal limitation. Consequently, the other parameter to increase the power is to increase the speed.
In theory it seems easy to increase the speed by simply increasing the voltage of the power supply. However, increasing speed will generate more heat due to:
• Iron losses• Bearing friction losses• Current ripple creating lossesIn terms of technology, there are two
major types of brushless dc motors, slotted and slotless.
The BLDC slotted has a small airgap;
coils are wound in the slots of the stator. The BLDC slotless has larger a magnetic airgap as the coil is in the airgap.
Depending on the application requirements, Portescap has the advantage to be able to recom-mend either slotted or slot-less motors.
For maximum patient comfort and therapy acceptance, a motor in such application has to be able to ramp from few thousand rpm up to 50,000 rpm in a few milliseconds in synchrony with a patient’s breathing pattern. The torque needed to spin the impeller is in the range of a few ounce inches. Most of the torque is used to accelerate and decelerate the impeller.
Motors for surgical hand tools have to run at high speeds to produce power in a light weight package, run at low temperature for surgeon com-fort, and in addition have to be able to survive the autoclave sterilization process.
Electric motors are continuously evolving with the constant release of new material in the market. For each application it’s crucial to understand in detail the specifications in order to offer the opti-mum design, Portescap has developed motor tech-nologies in order to address each application with the optimal solution.

A more flexible and resilient alternative to Wi-Fi based, RF based, and hard-wired data
transfer is optical data transmission.
The former two methods are vulner-able to noise interference and can exhibit varying transfer speeds based on the location and the amount of metal present in the environment.
The result can be a significant
attenuation of the transfer rate. Hard-wired data transfer can employ drag cables or slip rings, which are prone to mechanical wear, inflexibility, and noise interference.
Optical data transmission offers a
simple means of sending information without these common drawbacks. It provides wireless data transfer via a modulated infrared light beam and is used in pairs with one aimed at the other along a line-of-sight axis. Using light as a method of data transfer means optical data couplers do not incur physical wear, do not require recalibration, and operate without problems in electrically “noisy” envi-ronments.
Optical data transmission is most commonly used in applications where one housing is mounted in a station-ary position and another unit trav-els along an axis toward and away from the first device. High-speed ver-sions transmit Ethernet communica-tions and can even transfer live video. This is especially useful in applica-tions where remote video feedback is needed for diagnostic or feedback purposes.
For example, in an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS), if a stacker crane doesn’t place a pallet in an overhead bay correctly and creates overhang, it is necessary to shut down the line for hours and physically re-position the pallet at the trouble spot.
With high-speed Ethernet optical data transmission, a camera can be placed on the moving crane to pro-vide live video of the crane and bays. The live video signal can be used to correctly position the pallet within minutes from a remote location like a control room. The optical data cou-plers transmit the video to the control room as well as the instructions from the control room to the crane for positioning.

Hemisphere GPS recently added another arrow to its technological quiver with the purchase of AgJunc-tion. Located in State College, PA, AgJunction provides a cloud-based data management software platform (i.e. software-as-a-service) and wire-less hardware to farmers and retailers of precision agriculture equipment. (Precision agriculture is a recent in-novation that uses such technologies as satellite imagery and information and geospatial technology to increase efficiency.)
AgJunction captures and shares data from different types of precision agriculture controllers. An example is a rate controller for the application of fertilizers or chemicals. The device controls the rates at which material is applied, based on a map that has been transmitted to the AgJunction platform. After the material has been applied, the results are sent back to AgJunction for analysis and record-ing. Other examples of precision controllers are planter controllers and yield monitors.
Precision agriculture data can produce lower costs and reduced environmental impact because fewer pesticides and less fertilizer and fuel are used, says John Bohlke, senior director, corporate administration of Hemisphere GPS. He says it can also increase crop yield and profitability and lower global food costs.
“Wireless and cloud computing are the way of the future in GPS ap-plications,” Bohlke said. “The first wave of benefits came from the on-board systems... that help drivers of agricultural machinery steer better and apply fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides more accurately. But the value of the GPS application equip-ment reaches a new level with data transfer [by wireless and cloud com-puting] so that related vendors, office personnel and experts can act on it. [Most farmers] are usually unable to extract and use the data themselves.”
In addition to AgJunction, Hemi-sphere GPS has four other main product families.
Outback guidance systems com-bine a terminal with a computer, GPS and color touch screen to provide visual guidance. They help farmers eliminate overlaps and skips in the field, which reduces their inputs and improves efficiency and yield.
Outback automated steering solutions automatically steer farm
machinery through the field with input from the guidance systems (above). They enhance the benefits of the guidance system and reduce driver fatigue.
The S320 is a global navigation-al satellite system (GNSS) portable smart antenna for land surveying. It contains the company’s Eclipse GNSS technology, antenna, batter-
ies and wireless communication in one enclosure.
Finally, Vector GPS is a navigation solution that is intended primarily for marine surveying and navigation. Vector, which can be used with or in-stead of more expensive inertial sen-sors, provides accurate heading and positioning even when stationary.
Hemisphere GPS has over 70
patents issued or pending. Most of them are on technology used in GNSS receivers and antennas, vehicle guidance and vehicle control.
The company’s products have a long list of potential end users. In addition to farmers, they include cus-tom applicators, aerial application pilots, agricultural retailers, land sur-veyors and mappers, earth moving contractors, hydrographic surveyors, work boat pilots, private yacht own-ers and shipping captains.
Most of the company’s products are sold through major distributors or dealer networks, although they are also sold by system integrators and OEMs that private-brand them and sell them through their dealer networks.
Hemisphere GPS was founded in 1990 when Calgary-based engi-neers Stephen Verhoeff and Michael McCullagh began developing GPS-based technology. In 2006, the com-pany switched its focus and began to acquire major players in the design and manufacturing of precision GPS products, such as AgJunction.
Hemisphere GPS has its head-quarters in Calgary, and, reflecting its pattern of growth by acquisition, offices in Scottsdale, AZ; Hiawatha, KS; Brisbane, Australia; and now State College, PA.

Electric cars get ready to race again
D espite generous government incentives, battery electric cars continue to struggle for market
share. Acceptance is limited by their inherent nemesis – a short driving range, although there is no shortage of speed.
The electric’s range limitation has not prevented courageous pio-neers from building race cars pow-ered by electric motors. Perhaps it’s fitting because in the infancy of the automobile when speed records were first kept, electric cars held the land speed record from December 1898 to April 1902. An electric was the first to exceed 96 km/h, but electrics were soon vanquished by gasoline power, which ruled until the advent of the rocket cars.
Just as racing was used in the early days to prove and publicize engine powered cars and test new technol-ogy, Drayson Racing Technologies of Kidlington, Oxfordshire, U.K, hopes to help validate the durability of electrics with its Lola/Drayson B12/69EV elec-tric racer. Drayson plans to compete in the new FIA (International Automobile Federation) Formula E racing series for electric cars scheduled for a 2013 launch.
Drayson’s racer is based on state-of-the-art Le Mans Prototype full
bodied cars, not open wheeled, and the technology includes active aero-dynamics developed in collabora-tion with Lola Cars International of Huntingdon, U.K., race car chassis and aerodynamic specialists.
The air management system directs airflow using electrically movable sur-faces ahead of the front wheels, as well as a movable rear wing and rear panel. These can be adjusted while underway by the driver to increase downforce in corners for increased traction, or to reduce drag on straightaways to pre-serve battery power.
A number of innovative approach-
es are being used, one of the most ingenious being wireless recharging that requires no power cable. The 300 kg lithium-ion nanophosphate battery pack supplied by A123 Systems of Waltham, MA, is recharged using coils in the car’s floor and charge pads in the garage floor. The car has to be static, but engineers are hoping for the day when they will be able to recharge on the fly from wires in the track.
Another innovative idea is regener-ative damping that captures the energy from the up-and-down motion of the suspension system and converts it to electricity that is stored in capacitors.
The system was developed by the engi-neering company Multimatic Inc. of Markham, ON.
The Drayson is powered by four “pancake” asynchronous electric motors with a combined peak output of 850 hp, enough to propel the 1085 kg car from zero to 161 km/h in 5.1 seconds and exceed 322 km/h. The high torque motors are cooled by both air and water, and are attached to the rear axe. No transmission is required.
The battery pack is located on the centreline of the car and is embedded into the design so that it contributes to the load-bearing structure, a technol-ogy Drayson plans to pursue further.
It is anticipated that the B12 will be the fastest electric racer ever, and in fact Drayson thinks it can demonstrate that an electric racer can be even faster than an engine driven car. Track testing is expected later this year, and Drayson plans to enter the Formula E in 2013.
Paul Drayson, managing partner of Drayson Racing Technologies is enthusiastic about its new prototype racer, and hopes the venture will be successful enough to spin off into other projects for the company.

W hen I started Autodesk Inventor Pro 2013 for the first time I had a strange
feeling of déjà-vu all over again. Mind you, I had just completed updating AutoCAD 2013 for Dummies.
The two most significant new items in AutoCAD 2013 are also new in Autodesk Inventor Pro 2013 (www.autodesk.com/inventor). This is all part of Autodesk’s master plan to have all of its programs look, feel, operate, and interoperate as similarly as is practical.
Let’s start at the beginning, which is pretty hard to avoid because the new Welcome screen is right there when you launch Autodesk Inventor Pro 2013. It is almost identical in layout and function to AutoCAD 2013’s Welcome screen. It will be interesting to see how users receive it, because Autodesk have tried a number of variants on this theme in AutoCAD through the years. In the past, user response has been somewhat less than enthusiastic.
You can turn off the Welcome screen so it doesn’t display at start-up, and you can access it at any time from the Get Started tab of the Ribbon.
A difference between the AutoCAD 2013 Welcome screen and the one for Autodesk Inventor Pro 2013 is that the latter one doesn’t have the links to Facebook and Twitter that are found on the AutoCAD screen. These links sounded like a good idea at the time, because Autodesk use Facebook and Twitter for discussion groups and training. The problem is that it seems some companies will fire you if you get caught browsing any social media sites. Naturally this has caused a stir in the AutoCAD 2013 user community.
Okay, you’re now ready to create a new file. The next thing you see is the totally redesigned Create New File dialog box.
Template files are now automati-cally sorted by type. Single-clicking on one produces a generic preview of the type of file it produces.
Whenever I write a product review someone inevitably asks “Why didn’t you mention such-and-such new fea-ture?” The answer is that I have room for about 600 words to cover about 100 items, so I have to do a bit of filter-ing. Here are several of my favorites:• It is no longer necessary to uninstall
and reinstall Inventor to change cer-tain application options because they have been moved into the Ribbon.
• Autodesk has re-organized the in-command marking menus so that OK, Done, Cancel, and Apply are always in the same relative positions in every menu.
• You may have noticed that some-times the overflow menus that descend from marking menus get a little long. With Autodesk Inventor 2013, you can switch to shorter versions that only display the most commonly used commands.
• Two different browser icons indi-cate under-constrained and fully-constrained sketches.
• Inventor 2013 introduces smart error messages. For example, if you try to launch the Extrude tool when no sketch is active then it complains, but it also launches the Sketch tool.

T echnology in the connector world has advanced well beyond the external multi-pin connec-
tors of yesteryear. Modern connectors come in more sizes with more housing materials and are confi gurable – even reconfi gurable – for a single purpose or in hybrid arrangements carrying combinations of power, signal, data, even a pneumatic line.
As power needs often differ among function modules within a layout, con-nectors can be confi gured to carry dif-ferent dc voltages. The alternatives, like mounting multiple terminal blocks on the outside of a machine, tend to be more expensive, cumbersome and labor intensive to install. Traditional hard wiring of machinery often results in over wiring – a cost passed on to the customer – and dense cable and wir-ing arrays inside machines – making servicing and upgrading more diffi cult. Using the latest connector technol-ogy optimizes wire consumption and internal space utilization, allowing for a smaller machine footprint, faster manufacturing and initial fi eld setup. A large choice of shells and housings
permits cable entry angles to suit any fl oor plan
In a real-world example, a maker of large industrial inkjet printing machines increased market share while lowering production costs by adopting a modular design approach and using connectors in place of hard-wiring systems. All of its machines have a print head and con-trol unit. Fiber-optic and electrical cabling, along with pneumatic hoses were hard-wired between each print head and control unit, so disassem-bling the print head from the rest of the system was a major undertaking.
By integrating all these feeds in a Harting Han-Modular connector, the print head now can be sepa-rated quickly from the rest of the system for easier assembly and repair.
In another actual case, a maker of acoustic microscopes for analyz-ing the integrity of semi-conductors developed a model requiring up to 120 leads for powering processes, including different voltages. The design objective was a machine with a small footprint, but engineers ran out of space inside the machine for such an elaborate wiring distribu-tion. Using two of Harting’s heavy-duty Han-Yellock 60 series connec-tors with 60 pins each to maximize space utilization solved the problem.
Accessibility and aesthetics are more important in connectors today – using a single external connec-tor creates a clean modern look in both the showroom and on the shop fl oor. Flexibility is equally important. Advanced connector systems should be easily confi gurable, without the need for special tools or expertise. These were the aesthetic, technical and utilitarian principles that Harting built into the design of the multiple award-winning Han-Yellock.
Years of market feedback said customers wanted a heavy duty con-nector that combined fl exibility with tool-free assembly, security against inadvertent disconnects, and reliable operations in challenging conditions such as dirt, dampness, vibration or heat or cold. Han-Yellock is confi gu-rable for single or hybrid roles. Only male crimp contacts are needed, requiring fewer parts for assembly.
The Han-Yellock modules have an added feature in that it is able to multiply connection, such as a jumper, potentially eliminating termi-nal blocks and extra wire. The design allows mating on the inserting or ter-mination side, a labor-saver during commissioning and cabling. It boasts innovations like an internal latched locking mechanism on the hood for easier, faster installation.
This is just one example of how diverse technologies, supportive of modular machine design, are enhancing the value proposition for OEMs and their customers from the get-go.

Hydraulic brake actuation began when Malcom Loughead invented the four-wheel
hydraulic brake system in 1918. The move to hydraulic systems made braking more effective than mechanically operated systems.
A common hydraulic brake actu-ation circuit, developed in the 1920s, is the master cylinder. In a single-piston straight-bore circuit, a master cylinder stays at reservoir pressure when there is no pedal input force.
The power cylinder, or two-stage master cylinder, was designed to meet larger displacement demands without an external power source.
Compared to master cylinders, power cylinders provide higher fl uid volume displacements that allow larger brake piston areas and larg-er brake forces. Therefore, larger vehicles can be controlled without increasing operator effort.
When requiring greater braking force and displacement than avail-able with power cylinders, a system
may need a booster. One boosted brake circuit uses an open-centre hydraulic power brake valve that requires very little oil. The valve boosts brake pressure through hydraulic power intensifi cation from a large booster bore to a smaller fl uid displacement bore. Boosted cylinder systems became common in the late 1950s. But to displace more fl uid than a power cylinder at higher pressures, brake engineers developed full-power hydraulic brake systems.
Brake pressure in a full-power system is controlled with a pres-sure-modulating valve, with a hydraulic power source providing brake pressures proportional to pedal input force. Accumulators provide hydraulic energy to the valve should the power source fail. An accumulator-charging valve
controls pressure within present limits.
Electrohydraulics, introduced by MICO in the 1960s, provide many advantages over tradition-
al hydraulics. A digital controller enhances hydraulics with added control features that are diffi cult to achieve mechanically. Brake instal-lation costs can be reduced and sys-
tem reliability enhanced through design simplifi cation.

S ince the introduction of the fi rst intravenous (IV) drip 180 years ago, so called for
its slow and steady release into the veinal system, the “drip” has been a staple method of fl uid delivery to hospital patients whose need for a constant supply of fl uid is unsuit-able to oral ingestion.
Technology has advanced and no longer is the drip dependent on gravity and a reservoir from which the fl ow rate is adjusted by variably elevating its supporting pole. Nowadays, infusion pumps can manage, monitor and regulate the fl uid supply to a patient. Some pharmacologic agents, such as heparin, require a precise method
of administering specifi c amounts of medication during a particular period and, in addition, the range of fl uids, whether saline, drugs, plasma, or serum may all be deliv-ered in variable dosages and com-positions. All this, in short, can be a nightmare to the pharmacist whose job is to control safety, sterility, mixture and delivery.
Fortunately, what could be a nightmare is becoming a dream for the pharmacist – thanks to Intelligent Hospital Systems Inc. (www.intelligenthospitals.com) in Winnipeg and its RIVA device (Robotic IV Automation).
RIVA, developed from research conducted by a team at the St. Boniface Research Centre in the mid 1990s, is the company’s fi rst prod-uct and it is now used by hospital pharmacies to automatically and accurately prepare IV syringes and IV bags. By automating the admix-ture preparation, RIVA addresses the issues of safety for the patient and the pharmacy technician, effi -ciency and effectiveness in the phar-macy and the challenges of a chang-ing regulatory environment.
The company works closely with all its customers to ensure that RIVA exceeds expectations – from determining return on investment to providing ongoing service and support after installation.
Drug preparation and the auto-mated process fl ow is impeccable. It mimics the compounding process conducted by pharmacy staff in the laminar fl ow hood. Operators can import pharmacy validated patient specifi c orders directly to RIVA from the hospital pharmacy information system or enter batch orders manually by touch screen or user stations.
After orders have been import-ed or entered, RIVA’s touch screens provide pharmacy staff with infor-mation about inventory or con-sumable items required for the
production run and it can all be handled by a single operator.
When the operator has gath-ered the appropriate items, the touch screens direct the operator where to load the specifi c items into RIVA. When all the required consumables have been loaded, the operator starts the production run.
RIVA prepares all the orders within a dual zone, ISO Class 5 environment and therefore protects both the product and the operator. It determines items required for each dose and selects and verifi es the items from inventory. After identifi cation, a pulsed UV system is used to sanitize critical sites on vials and bags. Throughout production, RIVA uses a new sterile syringe for each fl uid transfer. This means it can manage a wide variety of drugs within a single production run with zero risk of cross contamination.
When a dose is complete, RIVA caps the syringes and labels the dosing syringe or bag and outputs it to the pharmacy clean room area through an output chute.
After a production is complete, RIVA goes into an idle status and waits for the next production run to commence.
But now, with RIVA’s success and the demand for safe, depend-able and cost-effective drug deliv-ery, RIVA’s “idle status” is sure to be severely limited.
