Editor’s NoteHello readers!

I hope you’ve had a good 2014 so far. It’s amazing how fast we’ve come to the final issue of LAVA magazine for this year. We’ve seen lots of interesting installations, events, showcases and technologies – and we can only look forward to more exciting things to come.

The fourth issue of LAVA is, of course, no different from previous ones: it’s packed with the latest industry news, newest product releases, as well as project showcases and installations from Asia and beyond.

This issue’s cover story is on Singapore’s National Day Parade (NDP), which took place on 9 August at The Float at Marina Bay. The celebration marked the country’s 49th year of independence and it was certainly a night of patriotic song, dance and breath-taking fireworks. LAVA magazine takes a look at how the technical aspects of NDP’s show segment were put together – from the stage projections to the lights and audio-visual systems that help bring the show to life.

Aside from this, we’ve also featured various lighting, audio-visual, broadcast and worship showcases, events and installations from Asia, as well as certain parts of the Middle East, Europe and the US.

Enjoy reading!

Best regards,

Nur Shakylla Nadhra (Editor)

HB-LASER MERGES WITH THE LASERWORLD GROUP

HB-Laserkomponenten GmbH is now a member of the Laserworld Group, underl in ing Laserworld

being the world leader in the f ie ld of manufactur ing and distr ibut ion of show laser l ight systems.

Mart in Werner, CEO at Laserworld, accompanied several acquisi t ions and new foundat ions of companies in the Laserworld Group in the past years, where he sees an obvious trend: “ In an increasingly di ff icult niche market, consol idat ing is essent ia l to conf igure in a way to be competit ive and at the same t ime provide products that perfect ly meet the requirements of the customers. Achieving this in such a special ised industry l ike ours is only possible with a strong team of highly qual i f ied indiv iduals; Laserworld provides the ideal f ramework for this!”

The company network already spans the whole world. The very companies maintain their independence, ident i ty and brand structures, but can further focus on their core business f ie lds. HB-Laser, one of the leading suppl iers in the German market, perfect ly f i ts this phi losophy: about 25 years ago, Harald Bohl inger founded HB-Laser and is undoubtedly one of the veteran companies in the show laser l ight industry. The core competencies are not only the development and manufactur ing of professional show laser l ight systems but also mult imedia and laser show product ion services. HB-Laser has been awarded with over 32 nat ional and internat ional awards already.

The new structure of the Laserworld Group br ings up promising potent ia l . The already wel l-establ ished market ing structures, as wel l as the dense sales network of Laserworld, become infused by HB-Laser’s experience and knowledge on the technical level, as

wel l as with customer support in project planning and implementat ion of laser show and mult imedia show product ions. Further synergist ic effects can also be achieved in many other areas, such as development, manufactur ing, purchase, logist ics and sales.

“We are impressed with SGM’s d ist inct focus on LED technology, and we bel ieve that the company has a l l the r ight prerequis i tes to become the g lobal leader in LED stage and archi tectura l l ight ing.

SGM’s current product port fo l io boasts excel lent design and sol id qual i ty wi th innovat ive features, such as IP65 water res istance. W i th momentum bu i ld ing, they have now dec ided to act . “Our dec is ion was ent i re ly based on the qua l i ty o f the system and i ts fu ture proof capab i l i t ies , ” cont inued Dougher ty. “Our growing bus iness, and the increas ing s ize o f events we are ca l led on to serv ice, a lso requ i red us to look for a la rger PA system to cater that requ i rement . ”

F ina l l y, he sa id , the purchase was based on the growing number o f aud io eng ineers eager to learn f rom a new system “ that w i l l de f in i te ly make a d i f fe rence in the fu ture” .

A lmoe’s new MLA made an ausp ic ious debut a t the Qua l i ty Awards Ceremony, he ld recent ly a t the Madinat Arena. “We used e ight MLA per s ide and the system came out w i th f l y ing co lours , ” sa id Dougher ty.

V i tanza is equa l l y unst in t ing in h is pra ise for the system. As a sound eng ineer, he says the key at t r ibute is the poss ib i l i t y o f remov ing guesswork f rom the equat ion dur ing set-up.

“Every event becomes un ique as the MLA can ad just i ts parameters to cover un i formly the whole aud ience area wi th incred ib le prec is ion. Other advantages o f MLA are i ts capab i l i t y o f avo id ing areas l ike

He went on to say that i t can be d i f f icu l t to apprec ia te the extent to wh ich a l l MLA’s combined techno log ies can boost a venue’s sound. “My pre ference is f i rs t to make the MLA behave as a regu lar L ine Ar ray (us ing Snapshot A ) to bypass a l l the ‘magic ’ ; then re turn to the opt imised Snapshot . The d i f fe rence is pret ty incred ib le ! ”

A lmoe has been back ing Mart in Aud io so lut ions s ince 2005, when i t f i rs t had the oppor tun i ty to hear (and subsequent ly purchase) Mar t in Aud io’s W8LM’s and WLXGS to wh ich i t la ter added LE1200, LE1500, F12’s , S15’s and F10.

“We have gradua l l y been increas ing our Mar t in Aud io inventory, ” conf i rmed Dougher ty. “And as demand grows, and the necess i ty ar ises, we a lso expect to purchase more o f the MLA components .”

Added Mart in Aud io In ternat iona l Account Manager, Andy Weingär tner : “We are ext remely p leased that A lmoe is aga in put t ing i ts t rust in Mar t in Aud io. The purchase of th is MLA r ig in the UAE reg ion f i l l s an important s t ra teg ic gap in between our As ian and European MLA users . W i th over 40 years ’ exper ience in the des ign and manufacture o f spec ia l ty products for these un ique indust r ies , the dec is ion was made to expand the bus iness g loba l l y by prov id ing immediate ava i lab i l i t y o f i ts goods in loca l markets . “We dec ided that the best way to ach ieve th is was to d is t r ibute our own products in our major markets , ” commented Roger W i l lems, Penn E lcom founder and Cha i rman. “Our in i t ia l mode l was to manufacture at our UK base and then supply our own sa les and d is t r ibut ion hubs, in i t ia l l y in Europe, USA, Canada and Aust ra l ia . ”

The course programme started by introducing the basics of the Armonía Pro Audio Suite software: how to establ ish the in i t ia l connect ion to the ampl i f iers and how to wire the system to achieve the best results in terms of redundancy and fai l-safe operat ion. ATOMOS TAKES HDMI ONE STEP CLOSER TO SDI PROFESSIONAL VIDEO STANDARD

Atomos has announced a move to standardise HDMI for the professional v ideo industry by focusing on

ease of use and customer experience. With in-depth experience and technical know-how, Atomos aims to help def ine industry standards.

SDI has ruled the professional v ideo space for over 25 years, bui l t on a backbone of dependabi l i ty and control. The prevalence of HDMI in consumer electronics and the DSLR revolut ion created by Canon’s 5D Mark I I / I I I , Nikon’s D800 and fol lowed more recent ly by Sony and Panasonic’s revolut ionary 4K mirror less camera has made HDMI the default connect ion for v ideo professionals. Unt i l now, however, many of the advantages presented by SDI have been missing from HDMI.

One of the big advantages of SDI over HDMI has been auto tr igger ing and t imecode communicat ion between cameras and external devices l ike monitors and recorders. Atomos has now made HDMI more usable and one step closer to the SDI standard by implementing auto start/stop tr igger and t imecode over HDMI. With this standard, users can connect using HDMI and automatical ly tr igger funct ions on external devices from the camera i tsel f , just as they have for years with SDI.

“We are very proud to be def in ing a new standard in such an establ ished marketplace. We love HDMI, but as i t gets more popular on the camera side we need to help make i t work in the pro world,” said Jeromy Young, CEO and Founder of Atomos. “Histor ical ly, this has only been achieved in the tech industry by creat ing

an open standard, which is what we’ve done.”

Atomos was the f i rst company to engineer auto HDMI start/stop and t imecode communicat ion with cameras – in i t ia l ly with Sony in 2011 for the FS100, this was fol lowed up with Canon in 2013 for the 5D Mark I I I , 1DC and C100. Current ly, a lmost al l professional Sony and Canon HDMI Cameras, including the A7S, employ this protocol. As the popular i ty of Atomos external monitor/recorders has grown, demand for this connect ion has spread quickly to al l camera manufacturers. Now with an open, free and avai lable standard, this transit ion can happen quickly and easi ly.

Another advantage that SDI has enjoyed has been a f i rmer, t ight f i t t ing connect ion. Again, in an effort to br idge the gap between SDI and HDMI, Atomos has developed i ts own range of HDMI cables with t ight f i t t ing connect ions and coi led cable lengths that al low for less clutter on the tr ipod and less force pul l ing at the HDMI connect ion.

“ Ini t ia l ly, we developed these cables purely to support the Ninja Star, our l ightweight, pocket s ize ProRes recorder,” said Jeromy Young. “But after consult ing with our user base, we soon discovered no one had yet developed a complete range of HDMI cables purely for ProVideo users in our space.”

Avai lable from 15 August, the range of HDMI cables includes a r ight angled HDMI micro to micro/mini and ful l coi led cables in lengths of 30cm (45cm extended). HDMI mini to ful l and ful l HDMI to ful l HDMI connect ions in lengths of 30cm to 50cm (65cm extended).

For the f i rst t ime in Asia, Qvest Media introduced the col laborat ive and cloud-based solut ion for v ideo product ion and l ive streaming to v is i tors at the Broadcast Asia exhibi t ion in Singapore.

The innovat ive plat form, make.tv, combines the features of a TV product ion van with the highest level of f lex ib i l i ty for teams working together f rom var ious locat ions. This makes i t possible for product ion crewmembers, such as ingest and outgest operators, cutters and mot ion designers, to work together f rom decentra l ised locat ions al l over the wor ld on col laborat ive remote product ions on make.tv. The same level of f lex ib i l i ty goes for the broadcast ing of content: as ide from pre-produced content, any number of d i fferent l ive sources such as cameras, smartphones and webcams can be integrated into the l ive programme.

Direct interact ion with the audience – for example in the form of vot ings, chats and cast ings – becomes real i ty in the l ive show. In the sense of ‘v iewers make their own TV’, users can produce contr ibut ions to shows and topics and also take part in compet i t ions. This way, broadcasters benef i t f rom act ive users and content, which they can then market.

The content produced on make.tv can be distr ibuted in near ly every format – onl ine, mobi le and on TV. Addit ional ly, s ignals can be broadcasted on v ideo plat forms such as YouTube and Ustream or v ia Content Del ivery Networks (CDNs) l ike Akamai, Level3 and Dacast. I t is a lso possible to broadcast on cloud-based mass storage plat forms for re-broadcast ing or in the form of a VoD offer.
