OUR LADY OF GRACE WWW.OLOGN.ORG SEPTEMBER 22, 2013

Off the Top of My Head… I finally started reading the first encyclical letter from Pope Francis, entitled “Lumen Fidei,” or “The Light of Faith.” The encyclical was begun by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, then, as Pope Francis puts it, “I have taken up his fine work and added a few contri-butions of my own.” I hope lots of you will read “Lumen Fidei.” If you’re worried that it will be “over your head,” don’t be. It’s not a “hard read.” It can be found online at the Vatican website, http://www.vatican.va/. The completion of a one Pope’s encyclical by another is not unheard of, but it’s never happened while the “original author” was still living! The collaboration between Popes Benedict and Francis can be instructive for us. The apparently novel public statements by Pope Francis, and the informal, off-the-cuff way he makes them (and does everything else, it seems), have prompted two opposite kinds of response. On one hand, there are those who interpret the Holy Father’s spontaneity, vulnerability, and “down to earth” approach as a sign that he is about to change traditional Church doctrine, ordain women, sell the treasures of the Vatican, and start going by “Grandpa Frank.” In reaction to this interpretation is the repeated as-sertion that everything Pope Francis has said and done has precedents in Church tradition, that this Pope or that has already done or said the exact same thing, that Pope Francis is simply reiterating the doctrine of the Church, and that, in essence, this Pope is breaking absolutely no new ground. I’ve obviously exaggerated both approaches for the purpose of illustration, but they both do exist. Those of the “Grandpa Frank” school will surely be disappointed when the Pope does nothing of what they expect. Conversely, those of the “interchangeable Popes” school ignore the distinctive appeal of this Pope’s humility, his simplicity, and his “people person” qualifications. And, while Pope Francis has not even hinted at changing any doctrines (as if the Pope were able to magically do that), he is certainly an agent for change in the church, not only through his delivery of the message, but through the message itself. As usual, “in medio virtus.” Virtue stands in the middle, between the extremes. We should allow ourselves to be surprised, not shocked, at the Pope’s words, take them at face value, and use them as a help to grow in our faith. Fr. Tom Metzger [email protected] 22 September 2013

Fr. Tom Metzger [email protected] 22 de septiembre 2013

CONTACT: Dee Ricciardi at [email protected] Thank you in advance for helping the needy and less fortunate in Hamilton County. The Steward’s Corner “You cannot serve both God and mammon” (Luke 16:13). Without even knowing what mammon may be, we get the stewardship message — what is important to us? God, or all of the other things in our lives which may distract us from living God-centered lives.

Scholars cannot universally agree on the origins of the word “mammon.” In Greek the word was mammōnas, which means “wealth or treasure.” In Latin the word was mammon, which translated “riches and avarice.” However, it is in Christ’s native language, Aramaic, where we may find the stewardship truth. The Aramaic word was mamon. That word had a dual meaning to the Lord in His own tongue —yes, it meant “riches,” but it also meant “chaos, darkness.” That may have been the point Jesus was trying to make in the Parable of the Unjust Steward. It is not just devotion to things that provide us with a major roadblock to living lives of stew-ardship. Those same “riches” may place us in a world of dark-ness, not the light of Christ which results from living as good stewards. Jesus is constantly advising us to be very careful about attaching our hearts to “things.” Truly we cannot serve both God and mammon.

OUR LADY OF GRACE FLAG PLANTING FOR UNBORN BABIES

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2013

BETWEEN 9:00 A.M. & 11:30 AM MASSES

Please join your fellow OLG parishioners for our third Flag Planting on October 6, 2013, to commemorate the 4,000 babies aborted daily in the USA. Each flag will represent one unborn

child. The flags will remain for two weeks. This will be simply a flag planting without any explicit speeches--an event in which even preschoolers can participate. It will be effective and im-

pressive; but, more importantly, it is a demonstration of our faith.

Please assemble in the breezeway at the front of the Church af-

ter the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Flags will be distributed, and you will proceed to an area near Our Lady of Grace’s marquee. The

Knights of Columbus, who will be dressed in red shirts, will direct you.

On October 20, 2013, between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Masses, we will be picking up the flags. We would appreciate your help in this task, too.

We look forward to seeing you on October 6 and 20!
