This season is the season dedicated to the Holy City and Eternal Capital of the Jewish People – Jerusalem. We have only just finished our seders where we sang ‘Lshanah Habah B-Yerushalayim’. It seems so much of what we do in Judaism and so much of our focus on the international political scene is centred around the Holy City.
As we know, this year, 2017, marks the 50th anniversary
of the Six Day War. Since 1967, for the first time since the Roman destruction of the Temple and the expulsion of Jews from our homeland, the entire city of Jerusalem came under Jewish control. After the rubble was cleared and debris taken away, the Kotel, the Western Wall was finally opened to civilians for the first time on the holiday of Shavuot. Over 200,000 reportedly made the trek (literally fulfilling the biblical mandate of “going up to Jerusalem – Aliya L’Regel”) and there they cried, prayed, danced, and sang - truly a miracle and homecoming the likes of which we and our ancestors prayed for close to 2000 years.
The emotional outpouring at that time was immense. Here are the words of Michael Oren, American-Israeli historian and author of the book Six Days of War: “Even for these very secular kibbutznicks, people who had never been inside a synagogue in their life, the feeling was overwhelming. Chief of Staff Yitzchak Rabin and Moshe Dayan, the Defense Minister, both very secular Jews, read Psalms at the Wall and wept. It was just overwhelming for everyone.”
As we celebrate what Jerusalem means to us, CBTASNH will be having a special Yom Yerushalayim concert in honour of the city of Jerusalem. With top Israeli performing artist Yonatan Razel, our very own Cantor Yossi Pomerantz and Or Shalom’s Orel Gozlan, we will have a night to remember and celebrate. Looking forward to seeing you on May 23

“PARTICIPACTION”
For those of you who remember the radio and television
commercials for “Participaction”, I am sure it grabbed you,
as it did me. “Participaction” started a government incentive
to promote healthy physical activity among Canadians. I love
the slogan and the meaning behind it, as did many others who
continue to use it as part of their everyday lives. I would like to
use it in a slightly different context for CBTASNH.
For me as President, I see the word as an incentive for our Shul and community
to grow. “Participaction” - Participate and you will see action!! For those who
are reading this, you see where I am going.
The strength of any organization is “People”. It’s the “People” who drive the
outcome of any initiative, no matter what it is. In our case it could be so many
things: from being a member, to joining religious functions, being a board
member, being associated with some of our many committees, or just being part
of our events that we have on a monthly basis.
For example our annual BBQ led by the Markel’s and their committee, brings in
more than 400 adults and children every year. And this year we tested the waters
with bringing back theatre music into our building, and it attracted more than
1000 people over 4 days. Our scotch tasting in April led by Ernie Furt, Jamie
Matlin and their committee, saw a record breaking 123 people attend. Our new
Speakers Series, spearheaded by Renana Chemtov and her incredible group of
people has been a tremendous success this year. In fact our last one for this
season on May 16th will feature Josh Freed, columnist of the Montreal Gazette.
More than 500 people will have been present for this series. On May 23rd
we will
be hosting a Cantorial Concert featuring the world famous Yonatan Razel from
Israel and Cantors Yossi Pomerantz and Orel Gozlan for this special Yom
Yerushalayim celebration. Our golf tournament which will be held on May 29th at
Elmridge Golf Club, will gather a great crowd as well. These events and also
others such as raffle, ORT, challah baking, youth, and all other activities and
programs are truly what make us who we are.
If you’re not sure how to get involved, or uncomfortable coming to that first event,
call me or any of our board members and we will help make it work for you.
“Participaction” supports the synagogue, our community and will enrich your
life.

LAG B’OMER – SUNDAY, MAY 14TH
– 18 IYAR
While the Counting of the Omer is a semi-mourning period, all restrictions of mourning are lifted on this 33rd day of the Omer. As a result, weddings, parties, listening to music, and haircuts are commonly scheduled to coincide
with this day. However, the most popular activity on the holiday is creating a bonfire (this is particularly popular in Israel). Other activities include having picnics and playing sports.

HEBREW ACADEMY NEWS March was a very busy month at Hebrew Academy Afternoon School. The month began with our Purim celebration. The entire school had the opportunity to watch a play, “The Purim Juggling Experience”, which was presented by The Living Legacy. The students greatly enjoyed the creative manner in which the story of Purim was brought to life. Naturally, hamantashen were enjoyed by all. Thank you so much to those who supported our Purim Mishloach Manot Fundraiser. We exceeded our expectations! Many thanks to our generous sponsors: Provigo, Provigo St. Jean, Noble Foods, Regitan, Splendid Chocolates, Paradise Kosher, Menchie’s and Randi & Larry Engler. A special thank you to our incredible Parent Committee for their commitment and dedication. Your efforts do not go unnoticed or unappreciated!
Immediately following our spring break and during our record breaking snowstorm, our Kittah Daled families made the extreme effort to celebrate “Shabbat on a Wednesday” with their children. Our well-prepared Kittah Daled students demonstrated their vast knowledge of and appreciation for Shabbat by reciting prayers, singing songs, and answering questions pertaining to the symbolism of this Holy Day. A light Shabbat meal was enjoyed.
Our Kittah Hay students and their parents ended their Jewish Journey with Rabbi Fishman. Their final meeting began with a presentation of the students’ group projects and ended with a very enlightening presentation by Rabbi Fishman.
To close the month of March, our Kittah Vav students accompanied Rabbi Fishman on a visit to the senior’s residence, Le Selection West Island, who were thrilled to be visited by our students. In addition to brightening the day of these seniors, our students learned the valuable lesson of Bikur Cholim.
Hebrew Academy Afternoon School began the month of April with Passover Seders. Our Kindergarten and grade one family Seders included the traditional Pesach blessings, Four Questions, Charoseth, Maror, etc. as well as a little unconventional dancing lead by our Israeli shinshim. Kittah Bet- Kittah Vav enjoyed pleasant and meaningful Seder celebrations with their classmates and teachers.
After the Pesach break, Kittah Hay and Kittah Vav classes had the opportunity to participate in a Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) program. Our students were privileged to meet a Holocaust survivor and hear his very poignant story.
In the upcoming weeks, we look forward to our Kittah Bet siddur celebration, school-wide Yom Ha’atzmaut parade and our Kittah Vav graduation. Mazel Tov To our 2017 graduates!
Please note that early bird registration for next year is presently in full swing. Take advantage of the discount for early registration, available to you until May 30th. Please call the shul office for more information (514) 683-5610 or email [email protected]

May – June 2017
19

The Torah was given by G-d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more than 3300 years ago. Every year on the holiday of Shavuot we renew our acceptance of G-d's gift, and G-d "re-gives" the Torah”.
In biblical times Shavuot also marked the beginning of the new agricultural season and was called Hag HaKatzir, which means
“The Harvest Holiday.” Other names Shavuot is known by are “The Feast of Weeks”
which marks the completion of the seven week counting period between Passover and Shavuot and Hag HaBikurim, meaning “The Holiday of First Fruits.” This last name comes from the practice of bringing fruits to the Temple on Shavuot. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE the Rabbis connected Shavuot with the
Revelation at Mt. Sinai, when G-d gave the Ten Commandments to the Jewish people. This is why Shavuot celebrates the giving and receiving of the Torah in modern times. The giving of the Torah was a far-reaching spiritual event, one that touched the essence of the Jewish soul for all times. Our sages have compared it to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. Shavuot also means "oaths," for on this day G-d swore eternal devotion to us, and we in turn pledged everlasting loyalty to Him. It is a Shavuot tradition to adorn the synagogue and the home with greenery, fragrant flowers, leaves, boughs and trees. The holiday of Shavuot is a two-day holiday, beginning at sundown of the 6
th of Sivan,
May 30th
and lasting until nightfall of the 7th
of Sivan, June 1st
.
Women and girls light holiday candles to usher in the holiday, on both the first and second evenings of the holidays. Candles on the first night are lit at 8:16 PM and on the second night must be lit from an existing flame after 9:32 PM. As on other holidays, special meals
are eaten, and no "work" may be performed. The Ten Commandments combine two sets of relationships: Duties between man and G-d, and our duties from person to person. Come with your children to the Synagogue to hear the Ten Commandments. Many Jews commemorate Shavuot by spending the entire night studying Torah at their synagogue or at home. This all-night gathering is known as Tikun Leyl Shavuot and at dawn Wednesday, May 31
st at 4:00 AM they recite Shacharit, the morning prayer.
It is customary to eat dairy foods on Shavuot. Among other reasons, this commemorates the fact that upon receiving the Torah, including the kosher laws, the Jewish people could not cook meat in their pots, which had yet to be rendered kosher. On the second day of Shavuot, the Yizkor memorial service is recited.
