It is, indeed, anequally rousing and catchy pieceof music, and the catchy tune inthe middle has just become aclassical ‘hit’. Johannes Brahms showed aninterest in the music of previousepochs at an early age. In thiscontext, he also came across thevariation theme of GeorgeFrideric Handel which, in turn,inspired him to write an extensivework of variations for the piano.The new edition of the WienerUrtext Edition is based on a metic-ulous comparison of autographs,first edition and personal copies.Brahms’s autograph copy servedas an essential corrective; subse-quent corrections of the composerin the personal copy of Max Kal -beck were taken into account aswell. Changes in tempo and indi-cations of expression of Brahms’sfirst version until the first editionallow conclusions about the com-poser’s interpretational ideas;they are analysed in the notes ofinterpretation. The clear andreadily legible notation makes thisedition a convenient basis forstudying this masterpiece.

The 19th century was not only theera of great forms, monumentalsymphonies and melodioussonatas, no, the Romantic com-posers proved to be versatile andhighly imaginative in the field oflittle music pieces as well. RobertSchumann was a master of thecharacter piece for ‘his’ instru-ment, the piano. From thirty ofsuch poetic miniatures, he select-ed thirteen in 1838 for his ‘Scenesof Childhood’, opus 15, the sev-enth, i.e. the one right in the mid-dle, being ‘Dreaming’, the mostfamous among Schumann’s com-positions. It is a romantic gem thecatchy melody of which will notget out of one’s head. The beauti-ful setting contained in the pre-sent edition can be played even bynon-pianists.

Motivic frag-ments taken from it are subject tovarious repetitions, thus becom-ing a kind of ‘mantra’. The monks prayed thatthe girl would intercede and hadbegun to sing the anthem AveRegina Caelorum when sheregained consciousness and wenton to recover completely thatsame evening.

This work for four male voices ormale choir demonstrates Bryars’vocal writing at its best andbreathes new life into early musi-cal traditions. A treat for bothamateur and professional singersor choirs.

When Peter Cornelius (1824–1874), the musically and literarilytalented and versatile artist, wentto Weimar in 1852 to pursue fur-ther studies with Franz Liszt, thelatter advised him to ‘throw him-self into writing sacred music witha will’. He heeded his advice andthereupon wrote a series of litur-gical and religious pieces formen’s choir as well as the songcycle ‘Vater unser’.

‘Die Seligkeiten’ for a cappellamen’s choir was sketched byCornelius in June 1852 withnumerous other evidently unfin-ished works after his encounterwith Liszt. The text is a free adap-tation of the Beatitudes from theGospel according to St Matthew.Set chordally and homophonicallythroughout, the choral work capti-vates people with its simplicityand expressiveness.

The Dutch Karel van Steenhoven(*1958) has written several compositions for the renownedAmsterdam Loeki StardustQuartet which was co-founded byhim. But he also wrote otherworks for the recorder: In‘Nachtzang’ (‘Night Song’) soprano voice and alto recorderperform with each other. VanSteenhoven was inspired by apoem by Adriaan Roland Holst inwhich the latter describes a ritualchant. Singing voice and instru-mental part are closely inter-locked, other instrumentations(perhaps as recorder duet) arepossible.

A recorder perpetuum mobile witha soprano ‘chorale’ is followed bya middle section characterized bygestures until, due to the returnto the beginning, the circle iscomplete. Thererather appear snatches from theirworld like a stroboscope.’ Thesoprano part in Larcher’s compo-sition attends to these texts in avery restraint, often introvertedmanner, but they continue to havean effect in the instrumentalparts, like catalysts of seeminglydisturbing processes. The worldpremiere with Juliane Banse,Christian Tetzlaff, NikolajSchneider and the composer onthe piano took place at therenowned festival ‘Spannungen’ inthe power station of Heimbach in2002. Recently, a recording hasbeen released by ECM NewSeries.

This is a particularly signif-icant statement for a composerwhose music is often a responseto the land and seascape of hisadopted home in the Orkney Isles.

The 30 minute orchestral work inthree movements is one of thekey works by Maxwell Davies inrecent years.
