Finding the Perfect GownOnce your date is squared away, it’s time to worry about what to wear. For guys, it’s fairly simple: Buy a nice suit with a tie to match your date’s dress. For big dances, like prom, there are several stores in the area where guys can rent a tuxedo for the occasion. “You want to match your date, so talk about colors beforehand,” says Julien. “My mom and I usually make my date’s boutonnieres, but we keep it simple.”
For girls, however, it gets a bit more complicated. Above all else, our Cy-Fair juniors and seniors advise shopping for comfort. “Make sure you get something you’re comfortable in,” says Julien. “And don’t just stand around in the mirror when you’re trying them on. Jump in them and move around. You want something you can actually dance in.”
SSpring is about more than just birds and flowers. It’s dancing time, too. Major dances, such as prom and end-of-the-year formals, take high priority in the minds of Cy-Fair’s high school students. Cy-Fair Magazine gives you the inside scoop on making these milestones a night to remember forever.
Inviting Your DateBefore you buy the dance tickets and before you find the perfect dress, you have to find a great date. For those with a significant other, the hard part is done. For those who are single, finding a friend who you know you’ll enjoy the entire evening with, whether you’re celebrating your choir accomplishments or finally enjoying prom, is the best bet. “My best advice for having fun at a dance is to go with someone who likes to dance and have fun,” says Cy Ridge junior Anna Montgomery.
Finding a creative way to ask your date is always a crowd-pleaser – and girls shouldn’t be shy. If there’s a guy you want to go with, turn the tables and ask him! Top ideas for creative ways to ask your date to a dance include decorating his or her car, making a poster, creating a scavenger hunt, hanging a banner in the school cafeteria for all to see, or getting on the intercom during morning announcements to ask – with the principal’s permission, of course. “I got asked to prom last year with a sugar cube igloo I had to melt,” says Cy Woods senior Clara Julien. Find a way to make it memorable.

With so many options, sometimes finding the perfect dress can be overwhelming or frustrating. “Go into it with an open mind,” says Cy-Fair senior Erika Dawson, adding, “But when you find the one you want, get it.”
As far as styles go, poofy Cinderella-style dresses are out. Simple dresses are an easy, yet elegant look for end-of-the-year banquets and prom. Short dresses are a trendy option that makes it easier to dance the night away. Look for a dress with rhinestone or beaded detailing to add a touch of sparkle to the ensemble. “Simple is the way to go,” says Cy Lakes senior Caitlin Havins. “Long, straight dresses can be so pretty.”
Popular colors for 2012 include jewel-tone blues and teals – think peacock feathers. However, choosing your dress shouldn’t be limited to the hot color trends. “Find colors that look good on you and a style that gives a ‘wow’ factor when you wear it,” says Montgomery.
Makeup looks can range from the dramatic to the classic. Bright, vibrant eyes in colors that match or complement the dress are one popular choice. “Trendy makeup looks for girls
are smoky eyes with nude-colored lips,” shares Jersey Village junior Sydney Gilmore.
For hair, curls are always a great choice. “A trendy hairstyle for girls is your hair half up and half down with curls,” says Jersey Village senior Lauryn Beattie. Side ponytails with lots of curls or super-straight hair with some rhinestone
barrettes are also show-stoppers.
Have a Game PlanDances at the close of a school year aren’t just a date on the calendar for Cy-Fair teens; they’re an event to look forward to for weeks or even months, which makes planning ahead essential. From
coordinating colors with your date to making sure you have restaurant reservations, having a game plan will make the entire experience run smooth. “When I’m in large groups, we always talk about our plans in advance,” says Julien. “When you have a lot of people trying to do what they want to do, it’s better to talk and plan way in advance. That way, everybody gets what they want to out of the night.”
While end-of-the-year banquets and dances often include dinner, finding the perfect spot for prom can be challenging.

Some favorite spots of Cy-Fair juniors and seniors include Carrabba’s, Carmelo’s, The Cheesecake Factory, Maggiano’s, and the Downtown Aquarium. When you’re on a schedule for a big night like prom, reservations are usually a good idea. “We like to go places that are fun, but still nice,” says Havins. “In the past, we’ve gone to Sakura, Shogun’s, and Carrabba’s.”
Don’t be afraid to challenge convention, though and pick somewhere unusual to save some money and time. “The best restaurant for dinner before prom is, for fun, Steak ‘n Shake,” says Montgomery.
Perfect PicturesWhen the big day of the dance finally comes and everyone is looking picture-perfect, you’ll want to make sure to document it! One of the best parts of living in Cy-Fair is the picturesque communities we call home. With their beautiful fountains and year-round greenery, there is no shortage of beautiful backdrops for pre-dance photos. “The best spot in Cy-Fair to take photos before a dance is out by Cy Woods in a pretty field,” says Cy Falls junior Lillian Kirby. Other favorite spots include Windermere Lakes, Coles Crossing, and Timberlake Estates. Whether it’s a beautiful landscaped backyard or your neighborhood’s park, you’re sure to find a perfect spot.
Once you arrive at the dance, there’s just one simple rule to follow: Have fun. While at the dance, don’t be afraid to get out on the dance floor and, above all else, be considerate of your date. “I want to take someone who enjoys dancing and having fun, just like I do,” says Julien. “The point is to have these nights be as memorable and fun as possible. I don’t want to stress out the whole night wondering if my date is having fun, too.” Havins agrees. “Be with your friends, and don’t hold back,” she says.
Relaxing After the DanceFollowing prom, nearly every high school in Cy-Fair ISD holds optional lock-in events designed to provide students with a safe post-prom party spot. Held at arcades like Dave and Buster’s, students have the opportunity to stay up all night playing games, spending time with their friends, and continuing to make memories. “Our project prom is at the Main Event in The Woodlands,” says Julien. “It keeps everyone safe and away from those who may be drinking and driving. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Following banquets and formals, however, students enjoy simply relaxing. “We like to go swimming after formals,” says Havins. “Formal nights are usually pretty long, so we like to just go out, relax afterwards, and undo all of those updos!”
Other favorite options for relaxing after dances include having a movie night, heading to someone’s beach house, or taking a trip to San Marcos to float the river.
Words of AdviceAll in all, dances are about having fun and hanging out with friends. There’s a small window of opportunity to make big memories, so seize the moment and enjoy every second of the experience. “Be yourself,” says Julien. “You’ll want to remember the night as something fun, not something that was hard to get through.” CFM
