“Welcome to the work of Coventry University Industrial Design students graduating in 2014. The students are graduating from our courses in Automotive and Transport Design and Product Design. Please take note of their skills in drawing, making, Computer Aided Design, and communication encapsulating issues such as social responsibility and sustainability in elegant and effective design solutions. The study of people, their needs and desires is at the core of this design, with an understanding of industry and its processes. The evident knowledge of the present and future world, its digital practices and social operations, demonstrates professionals who will be valuable and effective in the future.”

Michael Goatman MCSD FRSAHead of Industrial Design

“I first met the Class of 2014 as Year 2 tutor and I was delighted to be reunited with them again for their Final Year. My fondest memory is of working with a group of them to supply concept art and storyboards in total secrecy for a BBC Top Gear special project during the 2012 summer vacation when they were literally holidaying all over the world. Even then it was clear how much flair, skill and professionalism was present in the year group which will reach fruition at the 2014 Degree Show. I’m sure they all have bright futures ahead.”

Brian Clough, Course Director and Final Year Tutor, Automotive Design

“The students graduating this year from our Transport, Boat and Bike Design courses have developed all their acquired knowledge, skills and enthusiasm from previous years of study into a range of compelling final major projects that show some strong conceptual thinking into the future of transport.

Our design students are expected to consider the total transport infrastructure system and research into future societal needs through use of future scenario tools. We wish all the students presenting here a prosperous career in their chosen field.”

Nick Hull, Course Director, Transport Design

“This year has seen a great variety in projects. Significantly, many of the projects are proposing novel, innovative design concepts in response to emerging challenges and opportunities in the automotive and transport world. Ageing societies, environmental considerations, changing attitudes towards car ownership, the increasing importance of the user experience, as well as the prospect of self-driving cars, are amongst the research topics which have inspired the designs on display this year. Students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and simply hard work have made for a degree show to inspire the future of transport.”

Dr Cyriel Diels, Senior Lecturer in Human Factors

“This year is the 30th Anniversary of Boat Design at Coventry University. To celebrate the success of the course, in the last year of the course as an official degree title, we are hosting the RINA Marine Design conference 3-4 September at Coventry University. It has been my privilege to lead this course since 2006, in this time we have shifted our focus from superyachts to commercial vessels, through integrating the research at EBDIG-IRC into teaching practice. This has resulted in 3rd year and final year projects informed by industry dialogue, which pushed at the boundaries of design. This year’s final year projects show a great diversity of proposals that encompass the full range of what Marine Design can be. Boat Design as with all our courses, is driven by the passion and determination of you our students, to think outside the box and find new design meaning for vessels as solutions to real world problems. This is reflected in the fact that a number of our current final year students have had their 3rd year projects presented at RINA conferences and they will have their final year project presented at the RINA Marine Design conference.”

Dr Sean McCartan AMRINA, Course Tutor Boat Design

“Our finalists this year have been a fairly ‘chilled’ bunch of highly skilled and talented people; the degree show committee students in particular have been a pleasure to work with! Adding a significant level of cultural and linguistic diversity to our courses, our international students have contributed significantly to our traditional catchment of dedicated home and European students in maintaining Coventry’s students’ projects as global benchmarks for visually creative Transport and Automotive Design undergraduate work. I wish our graduates and their future careers all the best!”

Peter Atkinson, Senior Lecturer, Transport Design

The Zehcco is a zero emissions hire city car for Lagos. This is a vehicle aimed at tourists, business people and commuters. With the belief that design can lead to social reform, this vehicle is designed to ‘harness the resources of the nation and promote national prosperity’, using natural resources including raw materials and able workers to create a self- reliant economy. Inspired by late modern (Bauhaus) and post modern architecture; this vehicle is transformed from a mode of transport to a piece of vehicle architecture; a timepiece.

The car com-pany which had the best of these qualities was TVR. Now the British sports car brand is coming back with a new owner and an invested company revival. I have designed a car that suits the brand and will ensure a successful return. A GT car with performance, technology and style to suit the brand’s heritage and the modern world. It’s the perfect addition for the brand to branch out and potentially return to the track.

With the influx of new information and technology can designers change the way in which they perceive design? Modern research regarding the understanding of the subconscious and how it concludes aesthetic pleasure can and should be used consciously in the process of design. By using this emerging information on a consistent basis within design it will help automotive design and other branches of design progress from visual assumptions to visual assurance and the recognition of the importance within the subject will soon be evident.

My project focused on looking at a small city vehicle for Jaguar and researching the best compromise for the power source in 2020. The design of the car was to emanate the beauty of Jaguar design while adapting the image of the brand into a smaller more eco world. The project looks at evolving the design and branding it to satisfy the question of what would a small Jaguar look like. Case study set in Rome with viable ideas to push the boundaries of car design.

Haishi is a decommissioning robot designed to replace the human from inside the nuclear reactor, away from any potential risk of radiation contact during it’s eventual shut down. Haishi’s remote control system allows the driver to control the vehicle from outside the plant, seeing what the robot sees through it’s multple cameras. The data is sent back to a clever but simple GUI program easily installed onto any laptop or desktop. Workers act in teams away from harm as multiple Haishi robots get stuck into the reactor.

The project has been developed on a vision to create something new and different to existing sailing yachts. Designed for a superyacht owner desiring; the ultimate lifestyle of a motoryacht and the excitement of a modern sailing yacht. Resulting in exclusivity and an affinity with the environment that is unrivalled. The combination of hull form and the modern design of the superstructure blend to give the yacht a profile that is both minimal and contemporary. The project consists of the exterior, interior and general arrangement

This project was to explore the future of low cost enjoyment vehicles. Looking into how modular components can be added to a main frame to save weight and money, in production and the life time of the vehicle. This vehicle has been designed to be cheap to maintain and repair, with removable arches which would be inexpensive to upgrade or replace. The interior monitors the users and uses movement recognition to display the correct information.

With a high demand for ‘greener’ vehicles, and an increase in alternative powertrains for transport, the all-electric vehicle market is growing at an exponential rate. Furthermore, sales of small vehicles and luxury vehicles are at a constant increase. For these reasons, the project I have undertaken is to design an All-Electric Luxury A-Segment vehicle possessing the convenience and practicality of driving a small car, with the same comforts and devices of premium luxury vehicles.

The Lumos project is an experiment into the feasibility of a solar powered vehicle that can be used day to day. Lumos is powered by energy that it generates from the sun using its innovative solar body, whilst getting additional charge when needed from the mains. The design of the vehicle is inspired by the movement of light, and the way light refracts through different objects, giving a smooth form at the front becoming more angular to the rear.

Rising sea levels are something that is going to greatly affect coastal cities across the world in the next few decades. We could be seeing a number of urban settings partially submerged giving birth to a completely new type of habitable environment. How can the automotive industry respond to this? My project has been about designing a luxury amphibious vehicle for a market that will emerge in the wake of this scenario.

I want to explore how we can design cars that pursue a lasting bond with its family. Can we, through haptic response, generate a familiar bond that is relevant only to the family of the vehicle? I believe through design, technology and materials we can create a sustainable relationship that gains value over time, making the car a more inherent part of their history.

The BRAUN city car can be seen as a legitimate extension of the German company, designed following its design language, minimalist, honest and functional. It is aimed to solve the problem of the overdesign in the car industry, achieving an unobtrusive, honest design. The main focus in the design process is defined by Dieter Rams’ “10 principles for good design”, meaning back to purity, back to simplicity.

Creating a new market in the Sustainable Luxury Houseboat sector with the use of Passive Design ensures environmental credentials that have important influences in the future of luxury - a direction that rates the personal experience over materialism. What can be learned from the growing movement of Rough Luxe - embracing imperfection created by wear and tear of time, and how can it be applied to sustainable luxury houseboats for 2030?

This project is about redefining egoism, it focus into concept of comfort, It is a moving space only for the user, who knows their value and wants to invest their precious time even in short and busy daily life. As fully autonomous vehicle, it reacts through the GPS, and the network between the other vehicles, it communicates itself, therefore the occupied existing driving components would be taken by real nature. Moreover, the vehicle makes the users to feel that they are in the nature, where no one can disturb.

This project is the resurrection of the Triumph Spitfire. I have chosen to show what a new design era could do to change the appearance of this prestigious British brand. Taking influences from previous models of Triumph in general and using modern themes, I wanted to create a different style that helped older generations recapture their youth while also taking Triumph into a modern era of style without simply re-designing the Spitfire. The main theme tag line being ‘Reinventing Original’.

Project Emotion is about bringing sentimental value to a vehicle, which naturally ages and wears over time due to the raw materials featured throughout the car, inside and out. The eventual change in aesthetics creates newer textures, and no two vehicles will be the same; creating a truly unique vehicle for each owner. As the vehicle ages alongside the owner, developing character over time, the bond and attachment for the car becomes stronger, ultimately becoming a sentimental part of ownership.

What does the interior of your car say about you? Through the predicted development in 3D printing technology & the utilisation of a modular design based platform set in 2024, this concept explores the possibilities. The added value of a modularised 3D printed architecture pushes the boundaries of customisation, accommodating the needs of an individual, also increasing the market potential. Advantages including an enhanced emotional connection, accelerated customising wait time & prolonged lifecycle of a vehicle.

Combining a vast range of styles, theories and ideas ‘Node’ brings together elements of architecture into a family car. Everything from the tower found in Philip Johnson’s ‘Glass House’ to the exposed functional elements found in High-Tech architecture are utilised. Theories from De Stijl can be found in the interior; a vastly reduced dashboard, low height seats and a pull throu gh curtain between the rear seats help to increase conversation and reduce confrontation.

Creating something desirable is a difficult thing to do as you have no general idea of what that is to an individual. Throughout my research I found that desire doesn’t come from within but it stems from being jealous of what others have. With this in mind, I wanted to exploit the aesthetics of the design to tempt buyers into wanting to know how enjoyable the vehicle is and what it feels like to drive... and also in the knowledge that it is electric as well.

The superyacht industry is going through a change in demand and clientele. The phrases “fuel efficient” and “eco-friendly” don’t immediately relate to the superyacht design industry but the desire to be seen as green and the increased cost of fossil fuels has led to a huge amount of investment by shipyards to create the most efficient hull platform. Where others often fail in revitalising a brand is in paying homage to an existing design. The ‘New’ Vincent does not ignore the brands history but embraces the elements which defined it and evolves these into a package worthy of the 21st century. The design plays on the key aspects of a Vincent; high performance, prestige, craftmanship and innovation. With this in mind a hybrid powertrain has been utilised to create a machine with the ground breaking performance and alternate thinking expected from the brand.

Whilst the GTR’s performance-oriented character has enabled it to gain popularity amongst the enthusiasts, it tends to lack human connection and spark emotion when used by every-day drivers, resulting in lower sales than its supercar competitors. I aim to transform the GTR’s character through its aesthetic appearance by fusioning it with an unusual and unexpected form - the monstrous form of Godzilla - that brings a sense of emotional attraction through ‘Danger’ and ‘Excitement’.

I used Autodesk Alias to model the exterior and interior of my vehicle, and used Autodesk Showcase to produce my final renders and create an animation.

The current generation are travelling more than ever. This ultimately leads to greater congestion, more fuel consumption and an increase in pollution. To combat these problems in the future, I have designed a small single seat vehicle for the most populous city in the world: Shanghai. This vehicle will be part of a hire scheme; young commuters can easily rent one via their smart phone or online. The small electric vehicle will reduce congestion due to its small physical footprint and passively absorb pollution through its clever photo catalytic paint.

My intention was to design a vehicle that provides confidence and comfort for insecure drivers, such as novice and elderly drivers. Presenting a vehicle with a robust exterior design, drivers can feel protected and safe when driving. Inside, a cosy and relaxing interior will dismiss external distractions to provide drivers with a sense of security. Drivers can experience enjoyment and love for driving in this vehicle. It is proposed to be the most emotionally human-connected vehicle in 2030.

Why is exterior lighting on cars still limited by the light bulb? Exterior lighting has a vital role to play functionally and stylistically, but why should it be limited to the front and rear quarters of a car? This design aims to ask how integrated lighting on an entire body surface could be used to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of cars in an autonomous future.

Driving Jewellery is a vehicle tailored to the desires of women; to create an opportunity to show off their status and a sense that vehicles could also become a hedonistic high fashion jewellery rather than an object to be in for specific uses. The concept came from the outset of vehicle design, to create a desirable item that would focus on high fashion and art to inspire desire, as opposed to simply adding utilities, led by misunderstanding the female market.

Dwindling natural resources and tough emissions legislation are forcing car manufacturers to increase their prices and reduce diversity. New cars have become too expensive for many, and mass produced vehicles have become generic and unexciting. Artisan car manufacturers have started appearing, utilizing off the shelf parts, recycled components and reclaimed materials to produce vehicles. Due to low production volumes, consumers are given the opportunity to become fully involved in the manufacture of their vehicle, which can reduce the end cost.
