To celebrate the success of the course, in the last year of the course as an official degree title, we are hosting the RINA Marine Design conference 3-4 September at Coventry University. It has been my privilege to lead this course since 2006, in this time we have shifted our focus from superyachts to commercial vessels, through integrating the research at EBDIG-IRC into teaching practice. This has resulted in 3rd year and final year projects informed by industry dialogue, which pushed at the boundaries of design. This year’s final year projects show a great diversity of proposals that encompass the full range of what Marine Design can be. Boat Design as with all our courses, is driven by the passion and determination of you our students, to think outside the box and find new design meaning for vessels as solutions to real world problems. Haishi is a decommissioning robot designed to replace the human from inside the nuclear reactor, away from any potential risk of radiation contact during it’s eventual shut down. Haishi’s remote control system allows the driver to control the vehicle from outside the plant, seeing what the robot sees through it’s multple cameras. The data is sent back to a clever but simple GUI program easily installed onto any laptop or desktop. Workers act in teams away from harm as multiple Haishi robots get stuck into the reactor.

This project was to explore the future of low cost enjoyment vehicles. Looking into how modular components can be added to a main frame to save weight and money, in production and the life time of the vehicle. This vehicle has been designed to be cheap to maintain and repair, with removable arches which would be inexpensive to upgrade or replace. The interior monitors the users and uses movement recognition to display the correct information.

The Lumos project is an experiment into the feasibility of a solar powered vehicle that can be used day to day. Lumos is powered by energy that it generates from the sun using its innovative solar body, whilst getting additional charge when needed from the mains. The design of the vehicle is inspired by the movement of light, and the way light refracts through different objects, giving a smooth form at the front becoming more angular to the rear.

Project Emotion is about bringing sentimental value to a vehicle, which naturally ages and wears over time due to the raw materials featured throughout the car, inside and out. The phrases “fuel efficient” and “eco-friendly” don’t immediately relate to the superyacht design industry but the desire to be seen as green and the increased cost of fossil fuels has led to a huge amount of investment by shipyards to create the most efficient hull platform. Project Sessanta is a 60 metre superyacht aimed at the emerging Brazilian market. It meets and exceeds the expectations of today’s superyacht owner in terms of beauty and efficiency.

Kinetic energy and movement representing a younger person is reflected in the technology and engineering. It will connect with the user portraying an individual sense of personalisation through colour and graphics.

With this in mind a hybrid powertrain has been utilised to create a machine with the ground breaking performance and alternate thinking expected from the brand.

I aim to transform the GTR’s character through its aesthetic appearance by fusioning it with an unusual and unexpected form - the monstrous form of Godzilla - that brings a sense of emotional attraction through ‘Danger’ and ‘Excitement’.

I have been working on an electric mid-sized super sports bike for Husqvarna, I wanted to come up with a unique concept that is not only practical but also has aggressive styling. Currently there is no other bike in this category (Mid-sized electric super sports bike). The bike is aimed at a wide variety of users including experienced bikers looking for something different, or new riders for ease of use. The design is intended to influence people to move away from combustion engine motorcycles to a more exciting option in this range of bike.

I followed the Citroen DS design language and incorporated some of the features it into my design, as well as adding in new ones. I used Autodesk Alias to model the exterior and interior of my vehicle, and used Autodesk Showcase to produce my final renders and create an animation.

The current generation are travelling more than ever. This ultimately leads to greater congestion, more fuel consumption and an increase in pollution. To combat these problems in the future, I have designed a small single seat vehicle for the most populous city in the world: Shanghai. This vehicle will be part of a hire scheme; young commuters can easily rent one via their smart phone or online. The small electric vehicle will reduce congestion due to its small physical footprint and passively absorb pollution through its clever photo catalytic paint.

Inside, a cosy and relaxing interior will dismiss external distractions to provide drivers with a sense of security. Drivers can experience enjoyment and love for driving in this vehicle. It is proposed to be the most emotionally human-connected vehicle in 2030.

Morris Traveller Revival - The Woody design is a vehicle that is iconic, this is why I picked the Morris Traveller. I decided to revive the Traveller just as BMW (Mini), VW (Beetle), and Fiat (500) have all done. My design keeps the key characteristic of the original but adds a modern twist to the design. The universal audience and the endless possibilities of the vehicle’s use is unlimited. I have sculpted a quarter scale clay model and completed many renders to show the varied use of my design.

In this project I made a pseudo car brand called VIMANA, a luxury vehicle division of Indian auto maker TATA Motors. The new company would launch luxury cars at an affordable rate for the rising middle class in India, and also be a direct competitor to other luxury brands. The word VIMANA is an old sanskrit word meaning heavenly chariot.

The Venom 32m is based on a high speed trimaran platform, with an aluminium hull and superstructure. The outriggers provide improved stability in high sea states over a conventional planing hull. It will provide coastal patrol for fishery protection and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The vessel exterior has an aggressive and sleek geometric design language, inspired by stealth aircraft and vessels. This gives the vessel a specific visual presence in the field of operation to help communicate its function.

Throughout the late 80s and 90s, the AE86 and Nissan Silvia were two of the most popular cars to be driven in motor racing. As the new GT86 doesn’t have a modern Silvia to compete with, this project will bring the competing legends back to life. Currently, the sports cars the Nissan offer are the 370Z and GT-R. I aim to fit the Silvia just below these cars as a low cost, light weight direct competitor to the Toyota GT86.

HGV Drivers throughout Britain and Europe are governed to very strict driving regulations. What happens to these laws and regulations if the driver isn’t actually driving? If the main motorway networks throughout the continent could be driven on autonomously, surely the drivers could maximise their efficiency when on the road? My vehicle doesn’t conform to the stereotypical plan shape of an ordinary truck and it takes into consideration proposals of new regulations allowing for a longer front end to increase pedestrian safety.

Therefore, my intention is to create an innovative luxury sedan vehicle for this specific group with necessary needs. Not only the needs, but also to enjoy the luxury and the speed of the vehicle. The target audience will be the third age from 50-up, or an aging society looking for better driving conditions, but also enjoying the richness of the design.
