Oktoberfest

Broadgate, 26 – 30 August Wednesday 4pm-11pm - Free

Thursday 4pm-11pm - Free

Friday 4pm-11pm - Free

Saturday 12noon-11pm - £5

Sunday 1pm-9pm - Free

No longer is Oktoberfest something you have to head off to Germany to experience. This year, Coventry has gone Oktoberfest-mad. The event, with a 1,750 capacity tent, starts off with a hop-soaked five days at Broadgate, with so much beer, food and music that, ‘ja mein lieber’, it will be just like being in Munich.

Sunday is a family day, complete with bratwurst-centred lunch options. The tunes will be courtesy of real Bavarian bands flown in from southern Germany and promising to have you up and dancing to hits like ‘Zikke Zakke’ and ‘Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit’ (don’t worry, we’ll help you).

Get a table and reserve your seat. We offer a package with food, beer and seat reservation for only £34-£39.

Come and enjoy the amazing atmosphere at the Coventry Oktoberfest! Don’t forget to check our lederhosen shop and come dressed like a real Bavarian.

The Story of Children’s Television From 1946 to Today, 22 May - 13 September Free admission

A History of Us: A stencilled (sort of) history of the human race, by street artist Pahnl From 1946 to Today, 22 May - 13 September - Free admission

From the earliest days of Muffin the Mule and Watch with Mother to the multi-channel world of today, generations of children have fallen in love with the characters and stories brought to life on the small screen.

The Story of Children’s Television explores the programmes that shaped our childhoods, from Muffin the Mule to Dangermouse. Packed full of clips and interactives for big kids and small, it showcases a brilliant range of original props and characters including Andy Pandy, Mr Spoon, Gordon the Gopher, Humpty, Pob, Brum and even Makka-Pakka’s scooter.

Join us for a wander down memory lane, to a celebration of children’s television, past and present!

The exhibition has been created by the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, in partnership with The University of Warwick Department of Film and Television Studies. It is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, BBC, Ragdoll Productions, ITV, Kaleidoscope and the Children’s Media Foundation.

Spray painted with stencils and offering an unconventional view of the past, this is our history as seen through the eyes of street artist Pahnl.

This hilarious 44-metre long miniature history of humanity stars a riot of tiny graphic people, dinosaurs, dogs and famous historical structures! Starting with the Big Bang, the exhibition marches all the way around the walls of the gallery into an imagined future, stopping in to visit the peoples of Egypt, Rome, the Dark Ages, and Victorians on the way.

Visitors can spot several references to Coventry amongst the chaos of history, along with inventions like the wheel, pointy swords, alcohol, politicians, electricity bills, flight and predictive text.

Exhibition supported by Arts Council England

Summer Gems

Coventry Watch MuseumSpon Street – rear of Shakespeare Public House Tuesdays and Saturdays 11am – 3pm Free – donations welcomed

Coventry has, over the past few centuries, been home to several industries of national significance. Watchmaking was first recorded in the city in the 1680s, but it was not until the 18th century that Coventry emerged as one of the main centres of the watchmaking industry in England. By the first half of the 19th century, Coventry had even reached a position of national dominance. It was not, however, to last - by the second half of the century, cheaper factory methods in the USA and improved quality in Switzerland were rapidly eating away at Coventry’s market share. All was not lost though, as the watchmaking industry helped develop a skill base that was to contribute to Coventry’s rise as a centre of the motor car, motorcycle, aircraft and precision engineering.

Minions Movie

‘Minions’ have existed for thousands of years, and they all want to serve the most despicable villain around. Unfortunately, they have a bad habit of getting their masters killed.

42 years before Gru and with no master, Kevin, Stuart and Bob set out on a quest to find a new villain to work for. Travelling to Villain-Con in the hope of being recruited by Scarlet Overkill, they soon find that she might actually be too evil even for them.

Featuring the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, ‘Minions’ is a prequel to the hugely successful ‘Despicable Me’ franchise.

Inside Out

Pixar’s latest animation will show you the human mind from the ‘Inside Out’, going into the head of Riley, where we meet her emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.

After Riley has to move to a new school, Joy and Sadness accidentally go missing in the depths of her mind.

Now that Riley’s only guided by Anger, Fear and Disgust, Joy and Sadness must journey through her long-term memory, imagination and dreams to try and get everything back to normal.

From the creators of ‘Monsters, Inc.’ and ‘Up’, ‘Inside Out’ reveals a place we all know well, but none of us have ever seen - the human mind.
