HOME OF THE SCOTS

Opening for the 2009 season, the Covenant Baseball Field is one of the most beautiful baseball facilities in the southeast. The ballpark is located on the south end of campus and just a few steps away from the softball field. The park features spacious dugouts, oversized bullpens, and roomy dimensions (LF/RF - 325’, CF - 400’).

The playing surface is one of the best kept in the region, thanks to the hard work by Craig Kleinmann and the entire Covenant baseball program. Opposing players, coaches, and umpires rave about the quality of the well-maintained infield dirt and grass.

In the summer of 2010, permanent bleachers were added behind home plate.

The Scots have a 65-48 record at the field in the five seasons of the ballpark’s existence. The first Covenant player to hit a home run at the field was Taylor Oldham on March 7, 2009 against Union (Ky.) College.

NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Divi-sion III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institu-tions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps stu-dent-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Ala-bama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with two associate members (one in women’s lacrosse and one in football).

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

With the exception of cross country, the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament. For those sports with Division standings, the top three from the South and top five from the North advance to the conference tournament.

Doug Simons Head CoachDoug Simons will enter into his eighth year as head baseball coach at Covenant in the 2014 season. Simons is now the second longest tenured head coach at Covenant (Mark Duble, women’s soccer, 20 years).

Simons came on staff in 2005 to re-start the intercollegiate baseball program. “We are a Christ-centered program,” said Simons. “We want to give the young men in our program the opportunity to grow in Christ, get a great education and develop into players who could play at the next level.”

Simons came to Covenant after spending 18 years in professional baseball. Simons played in the major leagues with the New York Mets (1991) and the Montreal Expos (1992). Most of his professional career was spent in the minor leagues where he accumulated 72 wins, 20 complete games, and made three all-star teams (1989 California League, 1990 Southern League, and 1995 Texas League).

Simons played minor league ball with the Minnesota Twins, Montreal Expos, Kansas City Royals, and Houston Astros. He also played professionally overseas in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Italy. After his playing days ended in 1997, he spent 4 years as a pitching coach in the New York Mets organization, and then four years as a full-time area scout with the Texas Rangers.

The baseball program had its first varsity season since the 1980s in 2007. The Scots produced just six wins in each of the first two years and 15 wins the third year. Since 2010, Covenant has finished at or above .500 each season with a modern era record 28 wins in 2013. The 2013 team was selected to its first NCCAA World Series appearance.

In his seven years, Simons has had three NCCAA region player of the year award winners and four NCCAA All-Americans.

Simons is a 1988 graduate of Pepperdine University, in his native California. During his three years at Pepperdine, Simons accumulated 28 wins, 18 complete games, five shutouts and at one point pitched 30.2 consecutive scoreless innings (still an all-time Pepperdine record). He was drafted twice (1987 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and 1988 with the Minnesota Twins). Simons started his professional career after getting his Bachelors degree in Education.

He and his wife Julie have been married 26 years, and have four children, Brian, KC (junior at Covenant), Kirsten and Paige.

Ben Wharton Full-time Assistant & Head JV Coach

The 2014 season will be Ben Wharton’s sixth with the Covenant baseball program and head coach Doug Simons. He spent his first two years at Covenant as a part-time assistant and has been the full-time assistant for the last three seasons.

A former professional baseball player, Wharton began part-time as the Scots outfield coach and strength and condition-ing coach in 2008 before being hired full-time in 2010. Coach Wharton has played two seasons in the Independent minor leagues, in 2007 with the Bay Area Toros (Continental Baseball League) and in 2008 with the Reno Silver Sox (Golden Baseball League).

Born and raised on Lookout Mountain, Wharton graduated from Chattanooga Christian School (2003) and Bryan College (2007), where he studied History and Bible. “Ben is top notch and a person that I wanted in this program ever since I got here,” Simons stated. “He is an integral part of molding this group of young men, not only into better baseball players, but into Godly men, as well.”

He and his wife, Stephanie (former Covenant volleyball player and ‘06 alum), reside on Lookout Mountain, Ga., with their sons Zeke (2 1/2 years old) and newborn Josiah. The Wharton family attends Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Craig Kleinmann Assistant Coach

Craig Kleinmann came to Covenant in the fall of 2009 and serves as the Scots pitching coach. Coach Kleinmann came from Lee University where he guided the Flames pitching staff from 2006-2009. Kleinmann also served at King College as the Head Baseball Coach from 1998-2005, and as an assistant coach from 1995-1998.

“Craig brings experience and success to the program”, coach Simons said. “He is an outstanding person and a great fit in our overall mission. We are blessed to have him on our campus.”

Kleinmann and his wife, Christie, reside on Lookout Mountain with their son Caleb and daughter Kinsley.

William Russell Assistant Coach

William Russell is in his sixth season of assisting with the soft-ball program. In addition to his softball duties, he assists with the baseball program under head coach Doug Simons.

He is the husband of head coach, Sara. Russell spent three seasons as the head baseball coach at Mid-Continent University before relocating to Lookout Mountain.

Russell played collegiately at Aquinas College and Mid-Con-tinent. Originally from Clarksville, Tenn., he graduated from Clarksville Academy and Mid-Continent.

He and his wife, Sara, reside in Red Bank, Tenn., with their two daughters.

Scott Whitted Assistant Coach

Scott Whitted is in his first season as an assistant for head coach Doug Simons.

Whitted is originally from Pennsylvania where he played base-ball at Temple University in Philadelphia. At Temple, Whitted played under NCAA Hall of Fame coach James “Skip Wilson. The Owls were a top 20 program and had made an appearance in the College World Series.

After his sophomore year at Temple, Whitted transferred to Covenant. At Covenant, he was a dual athlete in soccer and

baseball earning MVP awards in both sports. While at Covenant, he was scouted by the Kansas City Royals and awarded NCCAA All-District awards his junior and senior years.

After graduating from Covenant, he then turned his passion for baseball into a passion for coaching. He has coached in various arenas from private and public high schools to coaching his son’s in Little League and travel ball teams. As a high school coach, he won a state championship and had numerous appear-ances in the state playoffs.

Most recently, Whitted spent three years as the Head Assistant and Pitching Coach at Emmanuel Col-lege in Franklin Springs, Ga., from 2011-13. Emmanuel made appearances at the 2012 and 2013 NCCAA Division I World Series, finishing 3rd in the nation in 2012. During those two seasons, Emmanuel pitch-ing staffs set consecutive season records for the lowest team ERA.

Whitted welcomes the opportunity to coach at his alma mater and be a part of the ministry at Covenant. He is married to Lisa (Bryan) Whitted (Covenant ‘84) and the couple has four children, Caitlyn (assis-tant tennis coach at Covenant), Kelsey (Covenant ‘13), Chapman and Jackson.

After a record-setting season in 2013, the Covenant baseball team has high expectations heading into the 2014 campaign which starts on Tuesday with a contest against Bates in Rome, Ga.

Last season, the Scots set the program’s modern era record for victories with 28 and advanced to the NCCAA World Series for the first time. This season, Covenant returns seven starters and its weekend starting pitching rotation.

The Scots, under eighth year head coach Doug Simons, also find themselves in slightly unfamiliar territory as they were selected as the preseason favorite to win the USA South and earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Covenant will be com-peting in the USA South for the first time this spring and as full members of NCAA Divi-sion III.

In order for the Scots to achieve their expectations, they will need both strong hitting and pitching. The batting lineup looks to be one of the strengths once again this season. The Scots hit .303 as a team in 2013 and return leading hitters Scott Gillespie, David Lock-wood, Will Cleland and Perry Rigby, among others.

Gillespie, a junior Milton, Ga., is the team’s leading returning hitter after batting .359 a season ago. Gillespie was a NCCAA Mid-East All-Region selection and produced 38 RBIs and 16 extra-base hits for the year.

Lockwood is one of five seniors on this year’s team and has been consistent throughout his career with a .344 batting average. In 2013, the Conyers, Ga., native hit .349 with 21 extra-base hits and 37 RBIs and was selected to the ABCA/Rawlings All-South team for Division III. Lockwood led the team with five triples and had 14 doubles for the year. In just three years, Lockwood holds the modern program record with 45 doubles.

Cleland and Rigby both had big offensive seasons as well last year. Cleland, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla., batted .347 with 23 RBIs and compiled a .962 fielding percentage at second base. He was named an honorable mention pick for the NCCAA Mid-East Region. Transferring into Covenant from UAB, Rigby had a solid freshman year as he tied for the team lead with five home runs and led the squad with 44 RBIs, while batting .319 for the season. The Decatur, Ala., product was named to the NCCAA World Series All-Tourna-ment team.

Several other returners hope to provide added depth in the batting lineup and defensively in seniors Paul Phillips and Chris Rollins along with junior KC Simons and sophomore Braeden Lane.

The starting pitching is also deep this season for Covenant. Lefty Micah Mabe along with right-handers Garrett Kriston and Alhanon Miller hope to provide a formidable 1-2-3 punch during the weekends in conference play.

A junior from Cumming, Ga., Mabe had a breakout season as a sophomore. The 6-foot-2 lefty earned NCCAA All-American second team and ABCA/Rawlings All-South selections after compiling a 7-3 record with an ERA of 2.43. Mabe set the modern program record with 13 strikeouts in a game at LaGrange on April 19. Mabe had displayed masterful control throughout the year as he punched out 69 batters in 74 innings and walked just 16, while holding opponents to a .208 batting average.

As freshmen, Kriston and Miller showed tremendous promise in their rookie campaigns. Kriston, out of Trinity, Fla., finished the year with a 5-3 record and a 3.41 ERA. The right-hander had four complete-games and had 45 strikeouts in 63.1 innings. Miller, a native of Yakima, Wash., was also impressive as he posted a 7-2 record with a 2.92 ERA and limited opponents to a .199 batting average in 61.2 innings of work. Miller earned NCCAA Mid-East Region honorable mention honors.

A group of newcomers will hope to have an immediate impact this season. Catchers For-rest Hunter (Bonita Springs, Fla.) and Alex Kerr (Lithia, Fla.) join Jordan Lester (Hiram, Ga.), Ryan Larrazabal (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and Luke Harvey (Apex, N.C.) as freshmen to watch this season.

Even as the preseason favorites in the USA South, the league is very deep this season with talented teams. With no conference tournament, the winner of the regular season title will gain the automatic berth. Covenant plays 27 conference contests with series against N.C. Wesleyan, Piedmont, Ferrum and Averett at home. In non-conference play, the Scots will face tough foes in Birmingham Southern, Berry and Bates, among others.

It was a year filled with milestones for the Covenant baseball team. The Scots, in their seventh year of intercollegiate competition after the program was restored, set a modern era record for victories and were selected to the NCCAA World Series for the first time.

The list of accomplishments, both team and individual, is deep. Covenant won 28 games (mod-ern school record), made its first trip to NCCAA World Series, head coach Doug Simons registered his 100th career win, sophomore pitcher Micah Mabe was selected as an NCCAA All-American, and plenty of others.

“I’m really proud of the guys and how they per-formed this season. Not only for their talent, but also their character,” said Simons.

The season got off on the right foot as the Scots swept a doubleheader from Berea in early February. The two wins gave Simons wins No. 100 and 101 in his Covenant coaching career. A former Major League pitcher, Simons was brought to Covenant in the mid-2000s to help restore the baseball program. After a couple of lean years, Simons and his coach-ing staff have turned the Scots into a consistent winner.

Covenant continued its torrid pace to start the season. The Scots won 15 of their first 18 games, setting a school record for best start in the process. The winning streak came to a peak on April 5 when the Scots routed Tennessee Temple 15-3 behind a record-tying six RBIs from Scott Gillespie. After 26 games, the team had amassed a 21-5 record and had been ranked as high as No. 3 in the NCCAA.

Stiffer competition awaited the Scots over the fi-nal few weeks of the season as they fell to perennial power Birmingham Southern and eventual NCAA tournament participant Huntingdon. The Scots took two-out-of-three on the road at LaGrange in the final weekend of the regular season.

In that LaGrange series, Covenant received some outstanding pitching performances. In game one, Mabe started and allowed three runs in the first

inning. Saying the lefty settled down after that in-ning would be an understatement. Mabe went on to throw eight straight scoreless innings for a com-plete-game and struck out a record 13 batters along the way as he moved to 7-1 on the season. Although Mabe was dominant, it took a two-run rally in the top of the ninth for the Scots to claim a 4-3 come-back victory.

The following day, freshman Garrett Kriston tossed a gem of his own. Kriston worked a com-plete-game and surrendered four hits (none after the third inning) and one unearned run while strik-ing out eight on just 79 total pitches as Covenant won 3-1.

Even with a 25-13 record at the end of the regu-lar season, Covenant received a five seed heading into the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament. The Scots were victorious in their first game before dropping the second game to No. 1 seed Camp-bellsville. Staving off elimination, the Scots won two games in one day over Tennessee Temple and Union (TN). But the tournament came to an end on Saturday as the Scots fell to host Trevecca Naza-rene.

Micah Mabe set the program record with 13 strikeouts in a game and was a 2nd team NCCAA All-American selection.

The loss to Trevecca almost certainly marked the end of the season as Covenant finished third in the regional. With the NCCAA World Series only taking three at-large teams, the Scots seemed like a very long shot to be selected.

However, fate was on the side of the Scots this year. Simons received a call late Saturday night after the region tournament that Covenant had been selected as the final at-large team in the World Series field. For the first time in school history, the baseball team was headed to the NCCAA World Series in Mason, Ohio.

Reaching the big stage for the first time, Cov-enant received local recognition as NBC news affili-ate, WRCB TV, came up Lookout Mountain to run a feature story on the Scots.

Once in Ohio, the team faced a daunting task as the 10-seed in a 10-team tournament. Covenant faced Arizona Christian in game one and rallied to take a 5-4 lead heading into the last inning. But ACU hit a walk-off three-run homer to beat the Scots 8-5. Covenant fell twice more the following day to Emmanuel and Campbellsville as they were eliminated from advancing in the tournament. The Scots had one last shot to pick up a victory, but could not hold on to a 2-1 lead as Olivet Nazarene rallied for a 5-2 win.

Even with the losses in the World Series, the Scots had a remarkable season filled with lasting moments. Of the 25 players on the World Series roster, 19 were either freshmen or sophomores. Covenant graduates just one starting position player (Sterling Witt). The 2013 season was certainly a rousing success, but the program will look to improve further as they head into the USA South Conference next season.

Wins and losses will come and go, but Simons has built his program on the foundation of character and understanding the “bigger picture.”

“I’m most proud when an opposing coach, player, fan, or umpire comments on the character of our team, which I heard repeatedly this year,” noted Simons. “I believe our guys grasped the concept of why we play and who we play for. They understand that the scoreboard isn’t the primary gauge of our success. I think they kept the ‘Big Picture’ the ‘Big Picture’ and won a lot of games in the process. I’m really excited about the future of this program.”

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.
