SFO International Terminal Terrace Sculpture Project Proposal

I would like to propose a series of three sculptures for the San Francisco Airport International Terminal Terrace Sculpture Commission. The central figure will feature a young girl sitting on two large old steamer trunks with flowering branches blooming from her braids. This sculpture will be flanked by two additional cases each slightly ajar with roots growing out, spanning the pedestal and seeking the dirt of the planter. A cherry sapping is pushing its way out of the suitcases in full bloom.

This series of sculptures reflects the global refugee crisis and the immigrant experience of displacement and adversity. It is a portrait that represents their exterior precarious state and their inner strength and fortitude. The girl is in the process of becoming; she’s an adolescent that is setting roots down in a new land waiting to flourish.

The sculptures will serve to welcome visitors, refugees and immigrants to San Francisco and to remind all travelers that we all come from somewhere else and that we share in her nomadic and transient condition. I feel that this work is ideal for San Francisco's International Terminal since it reinforces the city's commitment to be a welcoming city and a sanctuary city, that protects and values it's diverse population while aspiring to a greater community.

All three sculptures will be cast in Silicon bronze and mounted on concrete pedestals. The girl will sit upon a central pedestal in the garden and the two suitcases will each be set, also on concrete bases, in the two large planters on either side of the girl. The figure, trunks, roots and branches will have a dark brown patina and the blossoms will be a rubbed white patina.

The girl on the trunks will measure approximately 96 x 36 x 28 inches. The two separate side suitcase and trunk sculptures will measure approximately 80 x 28 x 24 inches.

If awarded this commission I will be sculpting the models and will personally oversee the making of the molds and waxes, as well as the casting, chasing and patina. The casting will contracted to Decker Studios in Los Angeles. To date I have worked with Sanford Decker at Decker Studios Foundry on six public commissions.Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with a number of reputable and certified fabricators in Los Angeles, on numerous public art projects. I am confidant that I will be to complete and install the work within the allotted time frame and budget.

Materials and MaintenanceAll three sculptures will be cast in 655 Silicon BronzeThe patina will be applied hot and will be coated with Clear Guard for UV for protection, plus a final protective application of Butcher’s wax.The suggested maintenance for bronze sculpture is that it be hand washed with only distilled water and thoroughly dried with lint free (cotton or flannel) cloths twice a year

  • minimum, or as necessary to remove materials such as soot, dirt and bird droppings. Neither power equipment nor solvents should be used, except by a qualified conservator.
