41st Annual

Saturday, July 16 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pmDowntown streets will be fi lled with wonderful things to do during the Downtown Courtenay Annual Market Day. You’ll fi nd handmade, one-of-a-kind products along with some of the best deals from favourite downtown shops. The streets will be brimful with over 90 vendors; some of the Comox Valley’s very best. There is something for everyone to do and enjoy, and now it’s on the weekend!

Local Colours Festival – July 15 to 16 Come out and join your Community Arts Council when we present LOCAL COLOURS Arts and Culture Festival July 15th and 16th on the streets of downtown Courtenay. The 6th annual Local Colours combines the talents of local artists working in a variety of media creating works from July 15, 11- 4 pm –July 16, 9-5pm, 2011. On July 16, the artists will be joined by a variety of acts on two stages, our main ARTS COUNCIL STAGE at the corner of 5th & England as well as the Sid Williams Plaza, also surprise street performances and kids fun activities. A vendor fair of local crafts people, artisans and home-based businesses will integrate with the merchants of downtown merchants during the 41st annual Market Day to create a unique shopping experience. Help celebrate our community and experience the extraordinary talent that the Comox Valley has to offer.

The Comox Valley Community Arts Council greatly appreciates the amazing support from the downtown business community and from festival funders the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (BIA) and Canadian Heritage.

You can fi nd them at the Artisan’s Courtyard the corner of 5th Street and Cliffe Ave.

Bounce-a-rama!! For more old-fashioned fun Kradles Baby Boutique and Whale’s Tale Toys presents a bouncer for kids to jump to their heart’s content. From classic cruisers to space-aged speedsters the Show and Shine has something for everyone. PHOTO BY SCOTT STANFIELD

Comox Valley Classic Cruisers

25TH ANNUAL GRAFFITI BASH 2011Cruise Nite - Saturday, July 23rd

Show & Shine - Sunday, July 24th

article by Miguel Strother

The Courtenay Classic Cruisers Car Club cel-ebrates 25 years of good times and great rides this summer. As such, the Show and Shine Graffiti Bash in down-town Courtenay on July 24 and 25 is likely to once again bring out the best in classic cars from across the West Coast of North America.

The Show and Shine Graffiti Bash is an open event with all categories of vehicles represented, including classic motor-cycles.

On display in the closed off downtown streets will be hot rods ranging from super charged Chevy Nova’s to tricked out Thunderbirds, mint con-dition MGs to restored Model As. Simply put there is something that everybody, car lover or not, can enjoy at the Show and Shine.

“I brought my grand-son last year,” says Fred Orduno, a regular visitor to the Comox Valley. “He was only two years old at the time, but what an experience. His eyes were as wide as saucers with all the chrome and colours on display.

Some people even let him sit in their cars, which surprised me a bit because they are for the most part immacu-late. I am not much of a car buff but we’ll defi-nitely be going back this year, mostly because

the little fella hasn’t stopped talking about it since!”

This year organizers say they are expecting more than 500 cars, up from a little over 400 last year, and are offer-ing a bevy of coveted Show and Shine tro-phies.

“Our trophies this year are going to be totally unique, that’s the best way I can describe it,” says Fred Tutt, pres-ident of the Courtenay Classic Cruisers Car Club. “People will have never seen trophies like these before, ever.”

Tutt, a former resi-dent of Richmond BC who still hosts a Lower Mainland radio show on AM 650, happily took on the title of club presi-dent during the quarter century anniversary but says he receives plenty of phone calls and good natured ribbing as a result of his new role.

“The running joke is whether I won or lost the election,” says Tutt. “But it is such an incredible group of peo-ple to be involved with. We just love it and the Show and Shine is going to be great.”

According to Tutt and others involved with the Classic Cruisers, the group is definitely as much of an extended family as it is a car club.

“This is an absolutely amazing group of people with about 175 people involved,” says Tutt.

“I think it was best described by (member) Jim Hamilton as ‘more than a car club’.”

What Tutt and the rest of the Cruisers mean by more than a car club is perhaps best captured in community efforts such as the year-ly calendar they create and what they do with the proceeds from that venture.

“We do a calendar every year and through that we’re able to give a good amount of money back to the commu-nity, including a $1,500 bursary to local high schools,” says Tutt. “These are kids that

are going on to an auto-motive related field. It doesn’t matter as long as its automotive relat-ed. And giving that type of thing back to the com-munity is a good feeling for everybody involved with the car club. That’s the kind of thing I got involved for.”

The bursary is far from the only thing that the Classic Cruisers bring to the Comox Valley.

The event itself is free to the public, although everybody is

encouraged to make a donation to the local food bank at the sta-tions set up around the site. And perhaps the most amazing part about the show is the amount of money that is spent throughout the course of the weekend. Tutt says conservative estimates of contribu-tions to the local econo-my stretch into the hun-dreds of thousands.

“The dollar value last year looking at hotels overnight, res-taurant food, and gas,

it amounts to a huge number. Easily over a quarter million over that weekend. It’s good for business.”

One of the reasons the Show and Shine Graffiti Bash is so popular is its relation-ship with downtown Courtenay and its busi-ness owners.

“We love having the event downtown. It is just an incredible set-ting and the downtown business group is just great to work with,” says Tutt.

MudsharksTracy’s imaginative acrylic paintings have been exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions across the northwest. Since receiving her B.F.A. from the University of British Columbia, Tracy has participated in artists’ residencies at the Atlin Art Centre, the Banff Centre for the Arts and also at the Island Mountain Arts Centre in Wells. Tracy, also an art instructor, has been inspiring others to pursue their own creativity for over a decade. Go to HYPERLINK “http://www.tracykobus.com” www.tracykobus.com to fi nd out more about this colourful west coast artist.

Arts Council Stage AreaMary-Anne Moore was born on the artists’ island, Salt Spring, grew up on Vancouver Island, and always loved to draw, paint, and be creative in any way. Her parents met in art school and her grandfathers were both painters so there was constant guidance and support given to her. In 2003, Mary-Anne received a Diploma in Fine Arts after spending three years at the Victoria College of Art. She continues to create and show her work in galleries, shops, homes, and on her websites: Miablends.com and UpGuys.etsy.com. Mary-Anne enjoys working with children in schools and community centres, passing along encouragement to create their artwork.

Roaming PainterFor two decades, Carey has divided his time between fi ne and commercial art endeavours. Once his children were grown, he began to devote his time fully to fi ne art in a money-for-love trade many artists make. Primarily dry media is what he started with, honing his drawing skills for many years, then giving that up for paint as a better way to animate light and refl ection.“The colors are richer, more solid and the layers create a depth that can only be achieved with paint.” After spending a few transient years between Calgary and Vancouver, Carey recently settled here on Vancouver Island where he indulges his passion to paint all things wet and refl ective. Since his fi rst show in 1982, his work has been in several group and solo shows in Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. Artworks are featured in the Alberta Art Foundation collection and several private collections.

The Potter’s PlaceTeresa has been an artist for many years. She got started in art when she and her sisters would pass rainy days at the cottage by drawing and painting, and Teresa continued in art. She obtained her B.A. in Studio Arts and Bachelor of Education in Art from the University of British Columbia and now paints in her Union Bay studio and teaches painting as well. Teresa exhibits her work at local and West Coast venues. She hopes, to use her paintings to raise money to improve the lives of overlooked animals. www.teresaknight.com

The Muir GalleryI am currently attending the Fine Arts Program at North Island College. My artistic pursuits are mainly in ceramics and printmaking. Renditions of the human fi gure express the internal states of existence and the emotional changes of an individual as a result of their experiences. I use clay as metaphor for the human spirit, as it is ever changing as a result of its contact with the human element and its touch. Printmaking allows me to deconstruct pre existing images in my imagination into individual segments and recreate them with some of my own personal history; a reconciliation of past, present and colour.

CAREY ANDERSON JENNA CHALMER TERESA KNIGHT

Painting atSouth Hollow Gallery& Leapenhi Arlene loves making paintings. She plays with colour, form and texture, primarily in the abstract/impressionistic style and incorporates a variety of media and techniques into her works. The making of these works is her favorite form of meditation. Her pieces are energetic and spontaneous and convey her joy of the process of making them.

South Hollow Gallery & LeaphenhiMuch of my life I’ve been drawn to and worked with glass and the light that comes through it. But before that, maybe as a result of a mechanic father and growing up around decaying cars, rusty patterns became an obsession. As a dancer, movement and line are critical to me. A stint with a creative-re-use organization cemented my love of found objects, re-use as way of life and a deep caring for the planet. I suppose all of the above is why I take such pleasure in creating window

pieces from a 25-year-old collection of rusted metal and - my newest passion - vintage chandelier prisms. I love the alchemical shock of combining rust and crystals to create earth-friendly creations that dazzle. When sunlight plays on these pieces my heart sings. I so want to pass that on.

The Potter’s PlaceSofi e Skapski has lived in the Comox Valley since 2004, painting out of her studio in Courtenay. She works in water miscible oils on canvas, concentrating on the way branches transform light and shadow, leaf and sky, into a stained glass kaleidoscope mosaic as trees stretch up to catch the sky. Sofi e Skapski received her art training at Capilano College, Douglas College, and the Instituto de Belles Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and Vice President of the Pearl Ellis Gallery in Comox. www.sofi eskapskiart.com

Randy began sketching and drawing designs at an early age, expanding his talents after graduation. He obtained his fi rst formal carving training in 1997 and 1998; Randy fi rst attended a Canoe Building Course with Mervin Childs and Calvin Hunt, and the following year he took a Mask Carving Course with Max Chickite. Randy was drawn into the carver’s world and has spent the years expanding his artistic talents carving masks, sculptures, Totems and Traditional Cedar Canoes. Randy Frank has been attending North Island College, working toward His Bachelor of Fine Arts. Although busy, he still makes time for local charities and schools. Randy has worked with high school students in the Northwest Territories and in the Comox Valley teaching basic carving techniques through school projects. Over the years, Randy’s artistic creations have been sold throughout the globe to private collectors and galleries.

Sid Williams Theatre PlazaGrace Wolff , a graduate from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design is an interdisciplinary artist who utilizes many mediums to actualize projects. Her practice incorporates drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, photography and found objects. She patterns her creative process on the course of deterioration in the evolving landscape, and hopes to evoke in the viewer the mystery of time as embodied by changes and how our perception is altered by events beyond our control. Grace is concerned with the ethereal qualities of her subject matter and her works explores the mystery of life, in particular the elusiveness of the passing of time. When she is not in her studio creating or working on commissions this summer, Wolff can be found facilitating workshops for children as well as adults. Grace will be working in her exciting interdisciplinary techniques on site during the Local Colours Festival.

Meet the Artists and Musicians/Performers

Meet the Musicians/Performers...

The members of Backporch Banjo hail from Courtenay and Qualicum Bay, and we found each other largely through the miracle of Craig’s List! Sometimes you fi nd a person you just click with... that’s us. We’re inspired by old-timey sounds, traditional bluegrass, Doc Watson, and sweet folk & roots music. We hope you enjoy our unique double-banjo sound.www.backporchbanjo.com

CYMC Musical TheatreCYMC Musical Theatre, is one of the most exciting and challenging musical theatre training programs in North America. Each year students from across the map come to the Comox Valley to prepare a full length musical in just under two weeks. This year CYMC MT’s productions of A Chorus Line and Glee Club will kick off on July 18, 2011. Here’s your chance to see highlights from both of our productions as well as sample solo performances from our talented students. The CYMC Musical Theatre Local Colours performance is a must see!

Alan Jossul & Leslie EatonAlan Jossul, self-admitting guitar nerd is tuning up with his partner Leslie Eaton for a musical project they call “Things with Strings.” Their music mainly consists of Alan’s tricky and sweet fi nger-style guitar compositions that he has spent his life writing. Leslie loves to add mandolin and button accordion to the mix creating a traditional feel to many of Alan’s pieces, which range from Celtic to bluegrass.Alan and Leslie are avid fans of all kinds of music and perform some interesting covers as well. “I can’t pick a favourite genre of music, but I have a soft spot for old jazz standards,” says Alan. Alan also has a new CD entitled “Soli” which is a collection of instrumental guitar compositions.

Larry Ayre will be performing this year at the Local Colours Festival. Larry has played just about every style of music on the guitar in the last 20 years of residence in the Comox Valley. Blues, swing and Rn’R have slowly given way to classical music and bossa novas played on the nylon string guitar. He will sing and play jazz and latin standards, as well as some traditional and classical musical selections.www.backporchbanjo.com

Comox Valley Youth Music CentreAmy has been writing and performing for as long as she can remember. During her university years, Amy fronted a popular band in the Niagara region, playing sold out shows for audiences every week. Her band shared the stage with many talented musicians, opening for acts like Jeremy Fisher, Sam Roberts, and Craig Cardiff . “There’s a hold that her voice has on people” says former band-mate Rachel McBride. “There’s something about its purity and soul that makes you want to listen and connect with her.” Her album “To the stars we’ll return” produced by Vancouver Island local, Corwin Fox will be released in July, featuring the dobro stylings of Doug Cox along with a slew of other talented BC musicians.

An acoustic trio, Fifth Bass incorporates many diff erent genres of music. Locals will recognize Brad Froese and Sean Sullivan as the guitars of Valley bands “Sixgun Buddha” and “The Relentless Couchmen”. Filling out the trio is a travelling troubadour, and long time friend and collaborator, Ari Rome. Ari is an extremely well travelled musician who has played East to West, North to South, and all points in between. The group features his unique lap steel and searing slide guitar stylings. Add to that the ferocious fi nger pickin of Froese and the vocals of Sullivan, this group will have you toe-tappin, like the sweet sound of a train rolling through a distant mountain pass...

In mixing the dark side of country blues with the light side of funk and pop, LBG’s sound and style conjure a meeting between Hank Williams and Curtis Mayfi eld.Recorded mostly live and completed in thirty hours, the album Luke Blu Guthrie embraces these diff erences. With unique musical insight and

lyrical wisdom, LBG’s songs and stories blend the past with the present in what one fan calls “ …an undeniably charismatic style. Luke has the rare ability to write songs that appeal to all ages”.Guthrie’s distinctive and eclectic style has found a home on cbc radio where Luke’s self titled demo recordings have seen considerable play. See lukebluguthrie.com for upcoming dates and news.

10am to 7pm on the Sid Williams Plaza. The “Comox Valley Song Circle” was established by local performer Helen Austin six years ago for songwriters to share and critique their original music. With the help of the CV Arts Council, they have been meeting Wednesday nights at the Muir Gallery for the past fi ve years. Now the members of the Song Circle will showcase their music in front of live audiences. Perry Johnson, stepped forward as organizer and director of the Song Writer’s Showcase. Many members of the Comox Valley Song Circle have written, sung and performed their way through its doors of opportunity. This would never have happened if it weren’t for the vision and dedication of our very own Helen Austin!

Brodie calls her style a mix of soulful ‘folky’ blues with a twist of pop and a twang of old-school country. True to all those genres she sings of life, love, searching and fi nding your way. Her vocals are strong, confi dent and soothing to listen to. Her words can almost be tasted as her stories make their way across your palette served up hot, smooth and rich on her own plate of originality. She’ll catch you at the door as the fi rst notes of her voice seem to wrap you in a warm cloak made of sweet, earthy moodiness.
