Dear Editor, Today I was visiting in Ml. Vemon

and happened to pass the city park downtown. I couldn't help but notice the despair of the United Stales flag which flew there.

The flag is a disgrace -- totally unsightly..

With all the controversy over the flag in the last few years, the ciiy-sho/ild make the effort to display a proper flag and under the guidelines of the law - weather proof, taken in during rainy days, and well lighted at night.

Whai I saw was a pure disgrace. I've heard of ihe county clean-up

program. Replacing this flag would be step one! <

A letter to the Editor and Con-cerned Citizens of Rockcastle County:

The last few years it seems lhai we've got the name, ML Vemon, on

'TV and radio and. it's not commend-ing us for anything that we have done toward the betterment of ourcommu-nity but is bringing disgrace to our county. I wonder when we will get settled down again and shootings stop happening.

Some few years ago my nephew worked at the Ordinance - at Richmond. Occasionally he and a colored man from Lexington would meet in the restaurant for lunch. One morning they met and the colored man finished reading the paper. He looked over at my nephew and said there had been another shooting scrape at ML Vemon. What's going on down there?

Do you all shoot each other for past time? My nephew told him it was not that bad but the colored man said it looked that way. If he thought that then, it is no wonder what he thinks now. My nephew told the man if he thought it was so bad why didn't he come down and see first hand. He said no sir, you-all arc not getting me down there. You-all would shoot me before I could get out of my car. As

Dear Dr. Parsons, I would like to take this opportunity

to thank you for your input on our survey concerning the school mas-cot. In reply to the things you men-tioned in your letter, I woula like to explain why we are conducting the survey.

Each year I have had parents voicc objections to the Red Devil mascot. I had to remove a Red Devil emblem with a menacing scowl because it upset some younger students. Many people don't feel the mascot is appro-priate for an elemcntary-^hool.

In response to these concerns, I have stated that if the mascot is ever to be changed, now is the time. If it isn't changed npw4 I don't think it would be appropriate to change later. The new building offers us an oppor-tunity to address many areas of con-cern we have about our school pro-gram. There have been no sugges-tions to change the school colors and the new gym is already being deco-rated in white with red acccnLs.

We welcome your input on this but disagree with your suggestion that we should consult with some "key alumni." This is a matter for the Mt. Vemon Elementary School commu-nity to decide. We welcome your input but also welcome the input of everyone in .our community. At this time, the majority of responses have been in favor of allowing the students to select a new mascot.
